tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What email API providers to use for pet project?
I've been using Postmark for many years, and have zero complaints.

Sendgrid, on the other hand, I would avoid like the plague.

tobinfekkes··on Bringing more transparency to GitHub's status page
Maybe instead of giving more detail about why Github is down (again), it would be better to invest in not going down in the first place?
tobinfekkes··on Curated Costa Rica: The Best Tailor-Made Experiences for Every Type of Traveller
Pass. The AI is far too strong. Couldn't keep reading.
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What are you building that's not AI related?
Same here! Good luck
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I do this now! It is wonderful. So many unique projects being worked on that you'd never come across in your daily life. It's always fun to experience a world that is so far removed from tech, and see how clever people are at solving problems without SaaS, apps, or spreadsheets. Not every problem has a tech solution.

And it has turned into a decent chunk of business over the long run.

tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What do you think Information Technology in Japan?
Refreshing. As good as it needs to be
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What software has improved dramatically recently thanks to AI tooling?
It's telling that this is still empty after an hour.

And I can't think of anything to add either.

tobinfekkes··on Guilty Displeasures
Amen!
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Explored Osaka today. Had wagyu, sushi, and ramen. Not a bad day.
tobinfekkes··on The peculiar case of Japanese web design (2022)
I just landed in Tokyo for the first time last night and ended up in the Don Quixote in Shibuya by accident (or adventure). What an experience! It's an invasion of all the senses!
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: How much did you spend on AI last month?
I tried it once for the first time a couple weeks ago. $12 total. While it was "worth it" if converting the dollars to time saved, it's also telling that I haven't gone back and used it again.
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: How do you maximize your luck surface area?
Being kind and generous to those that cross your path works pretty well.
tobinfekkes··on Traintrackr – Live LED Maps
I have the London board in my living room. It's one my favorite parts of the house. Can't recommend it enough.
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What was your worst typo?
Not quite a "typo" exactly, but more a misclick: a few weeks ago, I accidentally clicked the wrong "delete" button and removed a production ecommerce system for organic grocery delivery. Two days before Thanksgiving :(
tobinfekkes··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020)
These are incredible! Learn something new every day, thank you for sharing.

tobinfekkes··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020)
Mine is the same, but unsaved files in Notepad++
tobinfekkes··on Bruno Simon – 3D Portfolio
I absolutely LOVED ChexQuest. It was fantastic. Just played it recently, in fact.

I was roaming around RE-PC in Seattle eons ago, and found an old CD of the game for $1. Snatched that sucker right up.

tobinfekkes··on Why Sell Lifetime Plans, in a Default Subscription World?
I've only ever done one lifetime deal, and it was my Gridpane account in 2020.

Best bang for my buck so far. Very happy with the service.

And kudos to them, they've still honored the deal (so far!).

tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What did Stripe change (Value Add)?
Completely agree, thank you for adding that. Their documentation was a head above the rest; personalizing the example API calls with your key/token included within the documentation made it trivial to try it out and see something working almost immediately.
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What did Stripe change (Value Add)?
Pro: they abstracted away the intricacies of getting "KYC" approval to take payments and abstracted the merchant services integration, so a developer could be up and taking payments in hours, rather than weeks/months.

Con: they abstracted the relationship a merchant has with their processor, so now they stand between you and your money, they decide whether you get it or not, or if you're banned or not, and you have no recourse if they decide your story isn't compelling enough.

tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: What did you force yourself to do and now you're glad you did?
Ending a business partnership, that I still wished worked out, but clearly they didn't care anymore.
tobinfekkes··on Google Colab Is Coming to VS Code
It sounds similar to saying "One billion people use Gemini" right after they force-install it on every Gmail account with no opt-out or disable button.
tobinfekkes··on Ask HN: Windows/Linux software that has no real equivalent on macOS?
Powertoys is a game-changer!
tobinfekkes··on Judge denies request to exempt Flock footage from Public Records Act
Wow. Don't see Stanwood on HN very often/ever.

tobinfekkes··on New-hire air traffic controllers must be under age of 31
Requiring a candidate be under 31 years old is not new. I tried to apply for this position 5 years ago, but stopped when I discovered I was 6 months too late.
tobinfekkes··on The International Criminal Court wants to become independent of USA technology
> the EU outsourced a lot of the software work to foreigners and basically ended up with low quality solutions

Is that very different than the US? That seems more like a timeless endeavor, not a European tech one.

tobinfekkes··on The International Criminal Court wants to become independent of USA technology
> building software is not that difficult.

Maintaining it is.

tobinfekkes··on My gf thinks videogames cannot be art. What to show her?
I was debating whether to specify which one, but then decided I would leave ambiguous.

Frankly, they're both great. I think I have more of an affinity to Portal 1, not because it's "better", but because it was first. That was a very distinct moment in my memory when the game mechanics "click" at the beginning, and you realize what's going on and there's no other game world like it.

tobinfekkes··on Alaska Airlines' statement on IT outage
My 6pm flight got delayed and delayed and delayed...until 3am... Then got cancelled because the crew timed out. Back at the airport waiting again now.
