And here I want GNU Guix but with an ML language instead of LISP :)
toastal··on Email and Git = <3
If this caused more folks to jump ship away from letting Google read all of their messages (as well as mine from the other end), then I’m all for it.
toastal··on Email and Git = <3
How will that CLI work when using non-proprietary Git (or other VCS) servers? Sounds like a way to get stuck in walled garden.
toastal··on Email and Git = <3
That’s because Microsoft GitHub is a proprietary monolith. Compare that to the open core & self-hosting of GitLab the more FOSS-positive space where each server (without federation) requires a new sign up, confirmation emails (meaning you already had to go thru email), CAPTCHAs, setting up new keys, etc. That said, you will need to get your email filters in place or you can get a lot of new, unwanted mail (assuming you are required to sign up which often isn’t the case).

But it’s not software—it’s a creative work.
toastal··on Wayfire 0.8
I edit in Vim using Dvorak. I always expect `ciw` to “change inner word” regardless of layout. Most shortcuts are stored in my head in this way, not by physical key placement. That said, it doesn’t bother me that xmonad sets up my keys based on the default layout, so if I switch to another to type in a non-Latin script, the WMs shortcuts stay bound to my ‘normal’ keymap as the others are only used temporarily.
toastal··on Wayfire 0.8
Oof. That is not an acceptable way to treat the issue. It’s one thing to say you don’t the time & cycles, but it’s another to WONTFIX it twice with a clear usability problem.

Why release a book under a software license instead of like Creative Commons?
toastal··on When does an old iPhone become unsafe to use?
By coincidence I had to get an old device running last night because current device is broken. I was able to flash 2023-09-05 Android security updates atop a 2014 phone whose last firmware update was 2016-09-01. Is the device not safe? To some extent yes, but I was able to keep an old emergency device running with security patches from last month which is better than having to buy a new temporary device or being stuck on the matching official 2016 ROM.
toastal··on When does an old iPhone become unsafe to use?
Implying manufacturers aren’t putting stuff in their ROMs they shouldn’t? At least these custom ROMs are built & maintained in the open.
toastal··on When does an old iPhone become unsafe to use?
Compared to many alternatives, it is better. The devices with longer support don’t have the basic features I need like a headphone jack & too many thing require a mobile device to function anymore, like Signal which doesn’t work without an Android/iOS primary device.
toastal··on When does an old iPhone become unsafe to use?
Security is the reason I get mad about bank apps detecting custom ROMs on Android. Support is usually shorter, but LineageOS can keep OS and software securities rolling past the manufacturers date. There aren’t custom ROMs in the Apple sphere tho since it’s all proprietary.
toastal··on BBC gives up on Threads, sticks with Mastodon
I hope not. Signal accounts require a phone number and an Android or iOS primary device or you can’t use the service.

There are already good, decentralized options that don’t require a phone at all. The time-tested XMPP+OMEMO has the characteristics I need while having the hardware requirements of a toaster compared to other options.

toastal··on My views on NeoHaskell
And every person that tried to make a FOSS one got a cease & desist. This sort of accessibility & developer hostility should clue in projects as to why they should choose a better option.

toastal··on Why are websites requesting access to motion sensors on my desktop? (2019)
I would agree. Too often they are folding like lawn chairs. I push back against a lot of ideas, but I have my limits too. In the case of adding all of this invasive fingerprinting, it’s not really acceptable.
toastal··on Why are websites requesting access to motion sensors on my desktop? (2019)
Or marketing/management is making them. You can only have the energy to push back against so many things.

If it’s proprietary, it can stay in they browser sandbox.

Even the KaiOS support ended for WhatsApp. That’s not to say anyone should use that metadata-scraping, address-book-stealing service anyhow.

Get a decent audio interface. At least that can handle mic/guitar inputs too & handle more output options @ the same price

toastal··on Matrix 2.0: The Future of Matrix
The fact that the group in control of the spec, the reference server, the most popular client, & the biggest server is the same entity is problem enough as it is for control/decentralization. Branding it top to bottom as Matrix would be the beginning of the end to me.
toastal··on Matrix 2.0: The Future of Matrix
Element supports UnifiedPush. My Prosody server forwards my notifications to me via the Cheogram app.

> There is a huge discussion about that on git

Git doesn’t have discussions??

toastal··on So let’s talk about this Wayland thing
Mine is amateur framing so I get to choose OS+compositor. But I had to migrate back to X11 to do photography work. Color management also helps professionally when communicating with designers, but isn’t necessity. The dock I picked up, I didn’t realize DisplayLink was something I would need to worry about since they have Linux drivers--and if there isn’t already patched flag available in Nixpkgs, I could add it if the color management ever makes progress after years of development.

We are still not Wayland yet. And my setup is personally blocked by both Xs.
