In an FP code base, it’s common for ADTs to be the backbone of all data structures from Maybe to Either, to anything you use to model data types. That being the case changing 4 lines into 13 scaled into a entire code base is a massive amount of sludge to wade thru & one of the best way to up the code quality is to increase readability for maintainers. More LoC is more LoC to maintain even if it seems like it’s just a few more lines.
Is there a functional language that compiles to Dart? There’s a difference between FP features & FP ergonomics. This seems like a very verbose way to go about things I’m used to being simple/easy.
If this was the case, it’s very important folks know such forges aren’t synonymous with the underlying tool. By all means you are free to use one, but Git (& other DVCSs) doesn’t require a cloud service. …And even if you do use one, it’s recommeneded to still have an email address (mailing list or maintainer’s) for patches so contributors aren’t required to create accounts with these dominantly proprietary services.
I remember that time & feeling the absolute need to run Minefield (for Fx v4.x) over stable since the next gen features/performance were too important even without add-on compatibility. The 4.0 release took forever in testing & Chrome flew out like a rocket. And even thru the lulls, Fx performance has always been good enough to stick around (tho eventually I moved to LibreWolf due to management of the new browser feature defaults).
Capyloon is an alternative trying to carry the FxOS torch, but its focus on IPFS & things other than telephony make it hard to recommend if you can’t use a phone as a phone.
I really wish the timing of FxOS was better as well as the marketing. I’d certainly choose it over Android, but we’re now sort of locked into the duopoly with terrible decisions from apps like Signal requiring you have a Android or iOS primary device or no service for you.
I hope the standardize on aliasing -ise and -ize endings in the CLI instead of throwing errors to folks just wanting to optmise or optimize because it shouldn’t matter.
What stands out to me is the way “three” & “free” have become indistinguishable among all classes now with the dental fricative being lost. It’s a shame since it’s a unique sound only a few languages including English.
Hybrid work was always a nice balance (having been fully-remote & on-premise). But ‘hybrid’ could mean a lot of things. Meeting up once a week, quarter, or annually for some teams & projects are enough to build that missing trust. Sometimes it’s just grabbing lunch with folks. But also, many of us, myself included, need to do better jobs integrating into the community & meeting our neighbors instead of relying so much on the workplace for socializing. I still find cafés an ideal location just because that reset & stimulation of fellow patrons or even the staff is enough to recharge & shake the funk that is easy to get stuck in if limited to just your own home where it’s too easy not to stop. Coworking spaces, labeled as such or impromptu, can help break it up too.
I’m disappointed at how much value some place in the +1 count on a proprietary code forge that the writer suggests not even taking charge & having your own dedicated page & embedding call-to-actions in the UI itself. I can’t blame them for wanting to market so hard & in this fashion (tho not big on the join-the-Discord callout at the end), but I don’t like how much value folks are putting into a metric that’s both easy to game & part of the keep-you-on-the-platform social media scheme that Microsoft GitHub has a lot of developers trapped in.
Idiomatic JavaScript doesn’t use currying. If you add it to your code base, you are now siloing your project to folks that understand currying which has two problems: 1) hiring Joe Schmo to add/maintain will be harder 2) folks that understand currying will almost certainly be more happy & productive in a language that has currying by default & is idiomatic.
For instance, the audience that sees fp-ts as a necessary, useful library to code in a manner they find most appropriate will find JavaScript/TypeScript ergonomics verbose, hard to read, and require someone with functional programming experience (see the verbosity according to their docs of TypeScript+fp-ts vs. PureScript: https://gcanti.github.io/fp-ts/guides/purescript.html). That audience would be better suited doing compiled option such as the aforementioned PureScript, or js_of_ocaml, ReScript, derw, Idris, GHC.js/whatever the new GHC compiler JS output is, or similar option. These languages will have the idioms of fp-ts without the heavy reliance on singularly library most of the TypeScript community doesn’t understand that bloats their code bases without requiring the safety (someone can just call .value on a Maybe/Option breaking the safety). (This is not a knock against fp-ts which is a marvel in & of itself, but the audience doesn’t line up with the idioms of the average TypeScript project).
Agree & disagree. What you need is a language where all of these features are first class, piping/compose operators, etc. but without this, the code base becomes unidiomatic, hard to read, and difficult for coworkers to understand. Forcing it into JS is where you have a bad time – there are many options for functional languages that compile to JS tho.
I wouldn’t care so much if I could get a USB 3.2 or 4 device that’s only 2–4 GiB for like $2. I would actually buy a handful for each system I need, label it, and update that dedicated drive. However, fast, new drives don’t come at sizes appropriate just an ISO.
It’s a shame too because it takes a lot more resources to encode & can often give results that are too smooth. JPEG XL offers a lot of features from years of other formats like FLIF that never quite made it over the hump. You know you’re making deafened decisions when Facebook+Adobe were on the same side as GIMP+Krita in pleading to get the format back.
No one said you had to ungoogle your life all at once. Take steps. Switch your browser to Fx or something else. Pick up a new email address with low fees with calendar & contact sync over CalDAV/CardDAV & keep both emails in use while slowly converting some over to the new address. Use LiberOffice or Etherpad on new documents. Use UnifiedPush on Android to handle notifications without send everything through Google. Install F-Droid & migrate to open alternatives. Eventually, you’d find Aurora store is just used for a handful of apps like your bank & everything else is in your browser or uses an open protocol so F-Droid apps work fine.
I’ve seen keyboards that allow firmware upgrades & configuration over WebUSB. This covers not just Linux but even smaller OSs as well as the audience using Android tablets as a PC or whatever.
And bugfixes always took 6 months til the next OS update.
Holding back Notifications and other PWA-related specs left a sour taste to me because it meant I couldn’t build a PWA …but you could buy Apple hardware a developer license and make a native app (even if it was mostly CRUD).
