Please do. Poison the training.
toastal··on Get Shit Done: A meta-prompting, context engineering and spec-driven dev system
This pile of Markdown files has the most cringe-inducing name I have seen in weeks.
toastal··on Leanstral: Open-source agent for trustworthy coding and formal proof engineering
Naturally the Microsoft-owned language is getting the AI hype instead of the more mature options that could do this sort of work… Agda, ATS, Coq/Rocq, Dafny, Fstar, Idris, Isabelle, Why3 just to name a few.
toastal··on Show HN: Vibe Code your 3D Models
Not the same thing to compare how others should license their software versus keeping ideals consistent in your own project+tooling. If “everyone else must be wrong”, why are there continually waves of projects leaving ever since the Microsoft acquisition in particular? There’s a correlation with the kinds of projects that left too being philosophically aligned with free software & copyleft.
toastal··on When AI writes the software, who verifies it?
Note that Lean doesn’t have a monopoly on verification languages. Dafney, Rocq, Why3, ATS, Agda, Idris… these all can do it too. The fact that Lean is controlled by Microsoft should cause folks pause considering how they are trying to monopolize so many other spaces… & the author works on Lean. Rather than comparing Lean to performance like OCaml/Haskell like the article does, Why3 is a superset of OCaml, Agda can compile to Haskell, & ATS2 compiles to C—rather than needing to adopt an entirely new language.
toastal··on Motorola GrapheneOS devices will be bootloader unlockable/relockable
Would be super dope if they brought back headphone jack Google teased Samsung over then a year later removed entirely. I haven’t even once considered GrapheneOS since I refuse to go without basic I/O.
toastal··on Why XML tags are so fundamental to Claude
XML works great for XMPP. KDL is compatible with it too.

What gets me is going from this structured data to Markdown which doesn’t even have enough features & syntax that the LLMs try to invent or co-opt things like the blockquote for not quoting sources.

toastal··on Show HN: Vibe Code your 3D Models
If it’s GPL then you must care about “free software”. If that is the case, you should reconsider hosting on a fully-proprietary code forge. It requires cognitive dissonance to thing FLOSS is the right license for your project but not for your tooling/community.
toastal··on Show HN: Deff – Side-by-side Git diff review in your terminal
I tried looking at the Ghostty homepage & it doesn’t even work without JavaScript so you can’t use a TUI web browser.
toastal··on Show HN: Deff – Side-by-side Git diff review in your terminal
kitty terminal has diff like this builtin https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/kittens/diff/

I use it with

    darcs diff --diff-command="kitten diff %1 %2"
toastal··on What Claude Code chooses
So to signal to users that your project isn’t slop, the strongest symbol is to stop using GitHub Actions… or more easily, leave Microsoft.
toastal··on Running My Own XMPP Server
Starts to sound like Signal isn’t the panacea some folks make it out to be :)
toastal··on Open Source Endowment – new funding source for open source maintainers
Why does it need to be Git? What’s wrong with Darcs, Pijul, Mercurial, Fossil, & so on?
toastal··on Vinyl Cache has left GitHub
Wonderful. If Nixpkgs would leave, I could finally start considering deleting this account with Microsoft.
toastal··on Gentoo on Codeberg
Most developers haven’t seemed to use another workflow unfortunately—& they scoff at suggesting the only workflow they know could be wrong.
toastal··on Gentoo on Codeberg
Coincidentally, my most-used project is on Codeberg, & is a filter list (such as uBlock Origin) for hiding a lot Microsoft GitHub’s social features, upsells, Copilot pushes, & so on to try to make it tolerable until more projects migrate away <https://codeberg.org/toastal/github-less-social>.
toastal··on Running My Own XMPP Server
How are you framing this? It’s an Electron app so it exists but doesn’t integrate or perform great. Last I recall you still were required to provide a SIM to sign up & you needed an iOS or Android primary device to even use the desktop client. Can you use a standalone, fast desktop application like you can these other protocols? I would say no, so “support” has shades of gray to it.

This is how I got kicked off LINE… they had a Chromium app that I could use tethered to an app, they disabled support for LINE Lite (which had light/dark theme, E2EE, texting, voice/video calls, debatable trackers (Firebase), even stickers & sending a location @ 8MiB instead of 200MiB+ of the “heavy app”), I refused to “upgrade” as it was a downgrade to me, & since I was no longer registered with a “primary” device, I was booted from the network. I don’t think I want these mobile-duopoly-required apps to be my primary means of communication with folks—especially now that my primary phone isn’t Apple or Google (luckily Open Whisper lets WhisperFish exist).

toastal··on Running My Own XMPP Server
Have you tried the Movim client? https://movim.eu
toastal··on Running My Own XMPP Server
Decent overview (& more broadly but the heart is about XMPP & good ol’ capitalist corpo greed): https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-netwo...
toastal··on Running My Own XMPP Server
XMPP has been great to run on NixOS… the servers uses so few resources compared to something extremely heavy like Matrix. The Movim client has been wonderful too allowing users to have calls/sharing from chatrooms (MUCs)—supporting a pretty new XEP in the XMPP space—which means there’s no good reason to be on Discord anymore if you care about the freedom/privacy of yourself & your communities.
toastal··on I gave Claude access to my pen plotter

I wonder what’s here that requires code execution

toastal··on Discord Voluntarily Pushes Mandatory Age Verification Despite Recent Data Breach
Almost all clients support file sharing. The Movim client <https://mov.im/> supports screen sharing. It should be noted that both Jitsi & Zoom use XMPP for the roster/chat/handshaking as well; so if you set up a Jitsi server for calls & such, you would already have a working XMPP server on your server that could be co-opted.
toastal··on Discord Voluntarily Pushes Mandatory Age Verification Despite Recent Data Breach
You should try XMPP with a Slidge gateway… it uses a lot less resources (CPU, RAM, & storage) on your server. The clients are lighter weight too.
toastal··on Show HN: Showboat and Rodney, so agents can demo what they've built
Documentation isn’t as simple document. There are tons of rich elements missing from the spec specifically for documentation… which is why so many resort to adopting one of the many incompatible forks of Markdown to try to get features that were missing (but are a part of reStructuredText & AsciiDoc for instance). That has a real tradeoff since these forks are not going to be compatible & they aren’t going to be as well defined as the specs for these richer lightweight markup syntax choices.
toastal··on Show HN: Showboat and Rodney, so agents can demo what they've built
MS GitHub can not only render rST & AsciiDoc (albeit pretty poorly since they the CSS is bad), but it also is employing its own fork of Markdown that isn’t compatible with other forks. “Just Markdown”, like the base spec, is so feature poor that everyone has their own incompatible fork which don’t make it render properly.

console/shell-session/sh-session (parsers call them different names) are for shell sessions, terminal sessions. Bash syntax is for Bash scripts, & these aren’t scripts but something you run in your terminal session.

toastal··on Show HN: Showboat and Rodney, so agents can demo what they've built
Winning a popularity contest doesn’t mean it’s good. That is the worst part of about these things as they just generate the most common denominator type code/tooling while also repeating anti-patterns/mistakes like the bash vs. sh-session/console issue I pointed out. Garbage in has been so much garbage out unfortunately.
toastal··on GitHub is down again
Using a Patch Theory-based option like Darcs or Pijul exist today & don’t have the tradeoff while also working offline.
toastal··on Show HN: Showboat and Rodney, so agents can demo what they've built
If agents can generate text so easily, why would they be limited to Markdown instead of reStructuredText, AsciiDoc, or LaTeX which have rich features that help users understand text? I can understand developers refusing to adopt proper formats for documentation, but this seems odd for the bots. It doesn’t even generate the correct syntax block in Markdown using “bash” instead of “sh-session”.
toastal··on GitHub is down again
Being snapshot-based. Git has some issues being distributed in practice since the patch order matter which means you basically need to have some centralized authoritative server in most cases with more than 2 folks to resolve the order of patches for meaningful uses as the hash is used in so many contexts.
toastal··on GitHub is down again
Does go build not support mirrors so you can define a fallback repository? If not, why?
