tnolet··on Tesla sales drop 35% in San Diego County
Was in the market for a Model Y. Got Volvo EX40 instead. Glad I dodged that bullet.
tnolet··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
Last Kubecon / Cloudnative Con they had a HUGE stand. Hard to miss them if you are in this space.
tnolet··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
For hardcore Wiz users: What are their killer features that you use day in, day out?
tnolet··on Blender-made movie Flow takes Oscar
That's the whole point. That it's not explained and you are left with tantalizing questions. It's ok to not like it. Not everyone likes the same things.
tnolet··on Ask HN: Ethical VC Funds?
There are two parts to this:

- The Limited Partners (LPs) e.g. the folks putting money into the VC fund. E.g. would you consider money from Saudi Arabia be ethical?

- The portfolio strategy. E.g. would you find investing in some company in the carbon based fuel space be ethical?

How are you different from https://www.browserbase.com/ and their Stagehand framework? [0]

tnolet··on Laravel Cloud
Yeah, I’m very familiar with them. But they never really were a framework specific platform or at least did not go in that direction very long. Now they are explicitly a framework agnostic PaaS.
tnolet··on Laravel Cloud
The idea is the company eats that cost and sees it as marketing. It’s pretty common with dev tools. But not required of course.
tnolet··on Laravel Cloud
Kinda annoying I have to put in a CC before starting a free $0 plan.
tnolet··on Laravel Cloud
That’s funny, because Rails is the one big framework that does not have a framework level hosting provider. Wordpress has it, Nextjs has it and now Laravel has it. There is no Rails equivalent.
tnolet··on Laravel Cloud
Easier to who? The audience here is folks that don’t want to wade into the murky Docker waters
tnolet··on Launch HN: Massdriver (YC W22) – Self-serve cloud infra without the red tape
Wanted to check your status page to get a feeling for stability. Is your status icon in the footer hard coded, or is there an actual status page?
tnolet··on Umami is a simple, fast, privacy-focused alternative to Google Analytics
yeah, funky how 20 years later the UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) query param is still the defacto standard tracking tag.
tnolet··on Ask HN: What are you using for personal tech blogs?
No that is great. Tnx
tnolet··on Ask HN: What are you using for personal tech blogs?
What made you go for Ghost?
tnolet··on Ask HN: What are you using for personal tech blogs?

what do you like about Svelte in this case?
tnolet··on OpenDAW – a new holistic exploration of music creation inside the browser
All plugins add latency. They just report that in their API and your DAW compensates. There is no way eliminate CPU cycles being spent on whatever the plugin does.
tnolet··on OpenDAW – a new holistic exploration of music creation inside the browser
No, low latency is not needed for all non-realtime things. Even then, you are looking for latency compensation. Just add one VST plugin to an audio track and you will instantly add latency.

The crux is you want everything to play in sync when doing recording and overdubbing, e.g. "hit record and what I hear live is in sync with what I have recorded already". Almost all DAWs solve this by just starting things a bit later (latency compensation). Some audio cards solve this by allowing direct hardware monitoring. But even then you will have some samples of latency.

tnolet··on Free Web Hosting Area
who knows? My handyman's site still works, so there is that.
tnolet··on Free Web Hosting Area
I just posted this as I noticed my handyman was hosting his site there. I felt very very nostalgic. The text, the buttons, everything. The mention they will "soon have SSL", unmetered traffic. Just good old early 2000s web.
tnolet··on No Calls
I'm a founder (and started solo like the OP) in the tech / devops / infra space. Doing calls, and in-person meetings is the 10x accelerator for sales. The OP is quite right in his assessment of what types of calls there are. Pretty spot on.

However, the moment you can afford to have AE (Account Executives) and "sales" in general to field these calls, you might benefit. He IS leaving money on the table.

(yes, we have all pricing, free plan and super extensive docs on our site. But still calls and meetings seal the sweetest deals)

tnolet··on CTO / cofounder exit deal after 1.5y at 600k revenue without SHA
When you sell ~50% of shares in a company for €60k, you implicitly value the total company (100% of shares) at €120k. Your tax office will also most likely (at least in my country) use that transaction to establish a fair (market) valuation.

Of course, you can structure a deal to include discounts, but you have to be careful with that too.

A new investor in one year might scoop in and say "Well, last time your shares were valued at price x, why would I pay substantially more?".

tnolet··on CTO / cofounder exit deal after 1.5y at 600k revenue without SHA
They are not "making" €600k / year. The had some one-off grants. This is not ARR.

The €1.3M grant has not landed and you can't use that. Even if that lands, it's still not ARR.

tnolet··on CTO / cofounder exit deal after 1.5y at 600k revenue without SHA
This will kill almost all new investments immediately. Investors will balk at ~50% of the shares of a brand new company being owned by an ex-founder no longer involved.
tnolet··on World Labs: Generate 3D worlds from a single image
This is more like the moving "still" pictures in a Harry Potter movie. Not a 3D world.
tnolet··on SST: Container Support
I understand, that is indeed valuable. But not at all clear from the documentation / copy in the linked post. I did not watch the video...
tnolet··on SST: Container Support
Why not just use Pulumi? The code would be almost exactly the same?

  import * as pulumi from "@pulumi/pulumi";
  import * as aws from "@pulumi/aws";

  const cluster = new aws.ecs.Cluster("my-cluster", {
    name: "my-cluster",
  });

  export const clusterName = cluster.name;

tnolet··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
The world of tax is complex. Business exist in many shapes and sizes. So...

- because companies heavily use government resources like roads and stuff.

- because losses can be offset against profits. These tend to be middled out over multiple years. You can port losses to other years.

- a lot of companies (holdings etc.) don't pay out income tax and are basically just letterbox companies. These companies need to pay tax on dividends otherwise they would literally pay zero tax.

tnolet··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
I wrote a bot / agent in Go that after installing it once in an AWS EC2 instance would starting checking and bidding on AWS spot instances and replicate itself there.

It would check the API, “buy” a spot instance and inject a startup scrip to download itself.

Totally useless. But fun.
