tnolet··on Launch HN: Simplex (YC S24) – Browser automation platform for developers
How are you different from Browserbase?
tnolet··on Users only care about 20% of your application
Founder mode unlocked
tnolet··on Users only care about 20% of your application
yep, exactly. We implement some parts of that over the years and it's a hog.
tnolet··on Users only care about 20% of your application
Even if you weed out the willy nilly stuff, you will bump into Enterprise users that are actually correct.

They will mention something you know you should have added but always wrote off as "bloat" or "not really really really needed". Those things start happening more and more the moment you are doing $100K plus deals.

tnolet··on EA Announces Agreement to be Acquired by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners
next up Ubisoft. Last Assassin's Creed was also a snore fest.
tnolet··on Users only care about 20% of your application
Very true.

But then you start selling to Enterprise and everything changes. Because one missing "hygiene feature"* can tank the the whole deal. And every Enterprise has a different one.

*like a toilet. It needs to be there. You use it 3 minutes per day. If it is not there, the house is uninhabitable.

tnolet··on A Postmark backdoor that’s downloading emails
This blogpost is almost impossible to read. Might be AI augmented. So many unnecessary sentences and embellishments.

Shame, the actual topic is interesting

tnolet··on What Are Traces and Spans in OpenTelemetry?
yeah, but spans can have events!
tnolet··on A failure of security systems at PayPal is causing concern for German banks
ideal will handle that. But it’s only in NL.
tnolet··on A failure of security systems at PayPal is causing concern for German banks
Wait till you learn about iDeal. Basically flawless online payments for 10+ years in the Netherlands. Dominates the entire online and offline markets. No cards, no signups, just your normal bank account.

P.S. lives in Germany 5+ years and can attest its banks and online banking are generations behind its neighboring countries. A travesty.

tnolet··on A failure of security systems at PayPal is causing concern for German banks
Off topic: Venmo does not exist (?) in Europe land. What’s its appeal compared to PayPal or regular credit cards or even debit?
tnolet··on How we exploited CodeRabbit: From simple PR to RCE and write access on 1M repos
what does that mean? Were the leaked keys irrelevant?
tnolet··on How we exploited CodeRabbit: From simple PR to RCE and write access on 1M repos
Interesting. We removed it as it was mostly too verbose, catching too many false positives and never really added anything useful.
tnolet··on JetBrains working on higher-abstraction programming language
Webstorm still randomly freezes when my Macbook goes to sleep. This is only happening the last 1 year or so.
tnolet··on Apache ECharts 6
Anyone ever tried switching from Highcharts to ECharts?
tnolet··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
This is painful. Anecdotal point: I have an 2024 EX40 and it’s been perfect.
tnolet··on I've launched 37 products in 5 years and not doing that again
Why, in all that this holy, won't anyone focus on one thing and stick with it until it stops making sense. Building a business takes time.

- Stop diluting your attention.

- Iterate, iterate, iterate.

- Stick around for long enough so people have a chance to know you exist.

tnolet··on Show HN: Magnitude – Open-source AI browser automation framework
I think you are overstating. Just use Playwright codegen. No need for manual test writing, or at least 90% can get generated. Still 10x faster and cheaper.
tnolet··on Booking.com sued for €1B by Dutch consumer protection agency
Translation of first paragraph:

"The Consumers' Association is starting a mass claim against hotel reservation site Booking.com. Due to illegal agreements and unlawful practices, customers are said to have paid too much for overnight stays for years. According to the Consumers' Association, this amounts to a total of approximately one billion euros.

"For example, the platform uses fake discounts, incomplete prices and invented scarcity", explains director Sandra Molenaar of the Consumers' Association. "With these kinds of 'dark patterns', Booking.com influences the choices that consumers make. And that is not permitted under Dutch and European rules."

The European court already ruled last year that Booking.com violated the rules. The Spanish court also imposed a fine of 413 million euros on the originally Dutch company for these kinds of practices."

tnolet··on Darklang Goes Open Source
Been following from the sidelines for years. Wish Paul and team invest in a person good at docs, some web design and copy writing. The website, docs, visuals, examples, typography, are just very confusing and feel amateurish.

Not blaming. Not everyone is good at everything or wants to make time for it.

But a good, well structured landing page with great, real life, examples and good hierarchy backed by awesome docs will make a ton of difference adoption wise. I hope.

tnolet··on Build API integrations with SQL and YAML – no SaaS lock-in, no drag-and-drop UIs
> The alternatives - proprietary DSLs or visual builders - would be far more complex to learn and maintain

that's where I disagree. Your YAML DSL is far harder to learn and maintain. My code can be tested, iterated, understood by my IDE etc. It's just code.

tnolet··on Build API integrations with SQL and YAML – no SaaS lock-in, no drag-and-drop UIs
But, this is just leaky abstractions to the max. You replaced a python code base with adding a layer of YAML on top of it, but then still requiring you to write Python?

My IDE will have a stroke parsing this.

tnolet··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Very curious to hear from avid note takers: is it a habit? (maybe addiction?) is it just a tool to do you work better? Is it for fun? Why the elaborate setups (Git + Wireguard etc.)

Sincerely, not-trolling, from a bare minimum note taker.

tnolet··on Ask HN: What are good high-information density UIs (screenshots, apps, sites)?
The basic, classic Salesforce UI. In this screenshot the classic is on the left, the new one they pushed already years ago on the right: https://www.newfangled.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/LEXOpp...
tnolet··on Mike Waltz Accidentally Reveals App Govt Uses to Archive Signal Messages
This is misleading bordering on rage bait. There were 11 dutch military police who created a WhatsApp group. This was not allowed and is also not sanctioned or any form of official Military Police communications channel.

The leader of those 11 was fired because of it.

It says it right there in the article. Stop making drama.

tnolet··on Show HN: Moose – OSS framework to build analytical back ends with ClickHouse
I’d brand this OS Tinybird.
tnolet··on ClickHouse gets lazier and faster: Introducing lazy materialization
yes, we looked at Timescale also. But they were much younger then and Clickhouse was more mature. Clickhouse cloud did not exist yet. We now use a mix of Altinity and Cloud.
tnolet··on ClickHouse gets lazier and faster: Introducing lazy materialization
For us these are just metrics on customer facing dashboards inside our app. They are basically realtime and show p95, p99, avg. etc over time ranges. Our app can show this for 1000s of entities in one dashboard and that can eat up resources pretty quickly
tnolet··on ClickHouse gets lazier and faster: Introducing lazy materialization
We adopted ClickHouse ~4 years ago. We COULD have stayed on just Postgres. With a lot of bells, whistles, aggregation, denormalisation, aggressive retention limits and job queues etc. we could have gotten acceptable response times for our interactive dashboard.

But we chose ClickHouse and now we just pump in data with little to no optimization.
