tmountain··on Debugging: Indispensable rules for finding even the most elusive problems (2004)
Years ago, my boss thought he was being clever and set our server’s DNS to the root nameservers. We kept getting sporadic timeouts on requests. That took a while to track down… I think I got a pizza out of the deal.
tmountain··on I spent 18 years in the Linux console
Nah it’s easy to quit vim:

ctrl-z, bg, killall vim

;-)

tmountain··on Time Dilation Formula / Calculator
"If our ship travels 20,000 light years in 40 years (from the perspective of those on the ship) then that would take a "real" 20,000 years from the perspective of those on Earth"

This part just breaks my brain. I've been reading about this stuff for decades, and it just does not compute. It's also a little funny because there's basically zero incentive for the folks on earth to send astronauts away at near-light speed, as they'd never realize the benefits of the mission.

tmountain··on 3D-printed neighborhood nears completion in Texas
It’s a gimmick. There is no point other than marketing.
tmountain··on Happy New Year 2025
Happy new year from Amsterdam. Thanks to everyone for the good times all these years!
tmountain··on Tell HN: John Friel my father, internet pioneer and creator of QModem, has died
Used QModem as a young teen, and it was my gateway to connecting with people in my community via a very cheap laptop that only had a floppy drive (no HD). This experience shaped my future and my trajectory in tech, thanks to your dad.
tmountain··on I send myself automated emails to practice Dutch
I initially imagined a script that would send an email generated by an LLM that you could reply to in the target language. Basically, an LLM pen pal that will email you regularly. Seems like a fun idea.
tmountain··on Ugandan runner due to arrive in London after 516 days, 7,700 miles on the road
People do run in the United States (tons of people). It is not a crime.
tmountain··on Ask HN: Have you ever taken a career break or gap year to hack?
Do whatever you want. Life is short, and even if you are making the wrong decision, you will learn a lot from the experience. The saying, “don’t go counting other people’s money” comes to mind here. If the OP is young (probably is if recently graduated), they have more opportunity (time) to rebound from the experience if it turns out to be the wrong path. Make your financial mistakes when young if you’re going to make them.
tmountain··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
I did it this way for about 20 years and recently moved to VSCode with its integrated terminal. It makes me feel pretty lazy and like I’m “cheating”, but there are some productivity benefits (LSP), and I’m less of a purist than I used to be. I maintained a blog about vim for 3-4 years, so I was pretty committed to that workflow back in the day.
tmountain··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
Then focus on brokering deals with the zillions of independent artists out there. I worked at Grooveshark (a long time ago), and this was a big part of our strategy, and it showed a lot of potential.
tmountain··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
If they are paying musicians to create what is essentially “filler” and using this filler to lower their per song streaming costs, they’re simultaneously denying real artists, producing real music, an opportunity to appear in the stream. For listeners that care, this represents a reduction in the quality of their content, and aligns the platform towards pure profit, as opposed to being an ecosystem where working artists can try and carve out a living.
tmountain··on Why is it so hard to buy things that work well? (2022)
More directly, I have never encountered a bug with any of these apps, aside from Linux kernel panics due to buggy drivers, which was almost always with long tail hardware back in the 90s.
tmountain··on Why is it so hard to buy things that work well? (2022)
Sure, using all the aforementioned tools for over a decade without any bugs that prevented me from completing a task.
tmountain··on Why is it so hard to buy things that work well? (2022)
It makes me really appreciate tools that DO work. Things like: the Linux kernel, Vim, PostgreSQL, the Golang compiler, etc. Interestingly, the aforementioned tools come from different ecosystems, and levels of financial backing, but all of them have been reliable tools for me for many years, all are complex, and yes... they all have bugs, but of acceptable severity and manageability.
tmountain··on SVC16: Simplest Virtual Computer
What do you recommend?
tmountain··on Should you ditch Spark for DuckDB or Polars?
Yup, everyone thought they had “big data” for a moment in the industry, and it turns out, they all just read the same trendy blog posts. I made the mistake of “clustering” at my previous company, and it introduced so much unnecessary complexity. If you are really worried about future proofing, just design a schema where the main entities are denormalized and use UUID for your primary keys. If you need to shard later, it will be much easier. Although, again, it’s likely that you will never need to.
tmountain··on Starting a Business at 60: My Father's Story
So much this… if you get enough sleep, exercise, hydration, and proper nutrition, everything works so much better.
tmountain··on Starting a Business at 60: My Father's Story
All nighters are usually the result of poorly set expectations or poor planning. Give yourself some grace and set reasonable expectations for yourself. You just sound burned out, not old. At your age, you need to give yourself some time to figure out, and recover, from whatever is going on in your life, not blame the passage of time.
tmountain··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
This looks cool. I would like to see a video showing how it makes brewed coffee. I’m currently using a moccamaster (for convenience), but it has far too much plastic. Pour over is a pain in the ass. I’m curious if you plan on shipping to Europe (where I live).
tmountain··on Flappy Bird in 1000 lines of C
I wonder what the smallest assembly implementation would look like to provide the minimal graphics API necessary.
tmountain··on Flappy Bird in 1000 lines of C
I’d imagine it will remain a reasonable choice for quite some time since it’s just a bunch of primitive operations.
tmountain··on Borgo Programming Language
I'll use it... for a hobby project! :-D
tmountain··on Trailbase: Fast, single-file, open-source app server built using Rust and SQLite
Same.
tmountain··on We switched from Next.js to Astro (and why it might interest you)
Didn’t know… awesome!
tmountain··on We switched from Next.js to Astro (and why it might interest you)
I think a lot of people would reject any dynamically typed language at this stage.
tmountain··on We switched from Next.js to Astro (and why it might interest you)
Elm was a pretty noble attempt—all things considered.
tmountain··on Rewrite Git history via drag-and-drop
I would rather have a messy commit history with all of the value that an audit trail brings va a clean history that purges said context.
