tmountain··on Pasta Cooking Time
Most pasta labels specify what seems like a ridiculous water to pasta ratio. Something like 4-6 quarts of water for a pound of pasta. Does anyone know if there's a good reason for this? I never use that much.
tmountain··on Apple Photos app corrupts images
I shoot RAW but I wouldn't want to eat up all my iCloud space with my RAW files. They're 80MB each off of my Fujifilm camera. I store them on a local DAS instead. Curious what the real use case is for storing RAW on iPhoto.
tmountain··on Fed helpless as US economy faces structural challenges, not monetary
Musk was using the government as a playground and a platform to build his personal brand. Nothing he did was “serious”. If they wanted to reduce the deficit, they’d close the carried interest loophole for hedge funds instead of running around on stage with chainsaws. That’d save around 1.3B per year which is far more than all the DOGE cuts combined. And, it wouldn’t cost a bunch of jobs.
tmountain··on Fed helpless as US economy faces structural challenges, not monetary
It seems like it's less about the actual percentages at this point and more about ongoing uncertainty paralyzing businesses. You can't do any long term planning in this climate, and that puts everything on pause across a wide spectrum of industries, which is objectively bad for the economy.
tmountain··on Gleam Gathering 2026
It’s a very nicely designed language that can run on BEAM or compile to JavaScript. I played around with it a while back and loved it, but I don’t have any projects that align with its niche, so I basically forgot about it. That said, it hits all the right notes if you want a simple functional language with great type support, pattern matching, etc, with minimal syntax to learn.
tmountain··on Six months into tariffs, businesses have no idea how to price anything
Yeah, I should have prefaced with "given a choice". I'm aware of the current manufacturing situation in the U.S.
tmountain··on Six months into tariffs, businesses have no idea how to price anything
Their whole platform is grievance. It’s the only thing he’s good at.
tmountain··on Six months into tariffs, businesses have no idea how to price anything
American companies will move manufacturing offshore long before they’ll open factories in the U.S. The economics of using domestic labor for cheap goods don’t add up.

What children are being “gang raped”? Your comment reads like extremist rhetoric.
tmountain··on AGI is an engineering problem, not a model training problem
I’m no expert, but it seems like self updating weights requires a grounded understanding of the underlying subject matter, and this seems like a problem current LLM systems.
tmountain··on Croatia just revised its digital nomad visa to last up to 3 years
I agree with you. It's purely political. The country has shifted to the right because of rhetoric around immigrants being the reason for everyone's problems. I do not agree with it, but I'm seeing it every day, and it does suggest that DN may be less viable as time goes on.
tmountain··on Croatia just revised its digital nomad visa to last up to 3 years
I live in Portugal, and there is a robust debate around this topic. It's far from ridiculous, and nationality laws are in the process of changing as a component of this discussion.

Also, many countries are "tightening down" their golden visa programs or removing them entirely. I have a friend who works for a golden visa consultancy, and they're already in the process of pivoting because of so many changes.

tmountain··on Croatia just revised its digital nomad visa to last up to 3 years
Politics are making it more complicated. Many countries are taking a less friendly stance on foreigners occupying valuable real estate and pushing prices higher without assimilating the culture. Like anything, the real answer is, “it depends”.

tmountain··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
AI is following the drug dealer model. “The first dose is free!” Given the cost incurred, lots of dark patterns will be coming for sure.
tmountain··on Extending Emacs with Fennel (2024)
Fennel absolutely rocks for creating games. It integrates with TIC-80 (open source fantasy console) and also Love (game engine) and PICO-8. Lots of blog articles on getting started. Check it out!
tmountain··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
Political othering is the process of emphasizing differences between groups in a way that creates an "us vs. them" mentality, often leading to prejudice and hostility. It involves constructing an out-group as fundamentally different and inferior, thereby reinforcing the identity and perceived superiority of the in-group. This process can manifest in various forms, including racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice, and it often fuels social and political conflict.
tmountain··on Many lung cancers are now in nonsmokers
I was just talking to my wife about playgrounds using shredded tires as the "mulch". I don't know where the rubber comes from, if and how it is cleaned, or what particulate material it carries, but it seems dubious at best.
tmountain··on AccountingBench: Evaluating LLMs on real long-horizon business tasks
Yes.
tmountain··on EPA says it will eliminate its scientific research arm
America was always just an idea. For the idea to work, the masses need to ascribe to and appreciate it. Americans willfully took the country in this direction. It’s democracy at work but delivering a “different agenda” than many anticipated.
tmountain··on EPA says it will eliminate its scientific research arm
They won’t get power again in a meaningful way. The last election was their “last stand”. The U.S. has a rigged court and gerrymandered senate. Kamala was right about one thing, “we’re not going back”. Unfortunately, the context was wrong. In this case, it’s, “we’re not going back to being a functional democracy”.
tmountain··on Ask HN: If AGI were invented tomorrow which countries would fare better?
This is correct. It’s an existential threat.
tmountain··on EverQuest
I was an EQ “junkie” as a teenager and played it pretty obsessively for a few years. It was a potent drug. I had an friend at the university, and she discovered the game, and stopped going to class. Basically, sacrificing her university education because of an mmo addiction.
tmountain··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Almost any idea has long precedence, but the confluence of recent rulings, taken in its aggregate, provides a pretty well defined toolkit for a major departure from the normative state into the prerogative state. No amount of intellectual Zamboni reasoning can change the fact that it’s obvious to any rational observer that the U.S. is speed running an authoritarian takeover. Naturally some will support these changes and others will oppose them, but it’s as objectively verifiable as climate change; albeit, with the same chorus of denialism.
tmountain··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
This is the same Supreme Court that granted the president immunity from any and all criminal charges as long they were made under the umbrella of the presidency. None of this is normal, and these are radical interpretations of the law explicitly designed to grant the president king like powers and reform the government into an authoritarian regime.

Masked ice bounty hunter in an unmarked vehicle.
tmountain··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
This implies that executive orders should be the status quo, which deviates from the design of the American system of government. The courts should not be routinely blocking the president because the president should not be routinely ruling by executive order. This change paves the way for additional power concentrated in the executive branch which is already far too powerful. It is the next step towards an authoritarian regime and no good will come from this ruling.
