What could he possibly be blackmailed for at this point? There are zero consequences to anything he says or does.

She was targeted because James Comey wanted to leverage her fame for his own career advancement. Not justifying what she did, but it’s no coincidence that she got roped.

The framers of the constitution acknowledged the flaws and vulnerabilities of democracy and cited education as a prevention mechanism for an ill informed population voting against their own best interest. It’s no coincidence that public education has been under constant assault from the right since Reagan.

Why do we? You say this as if the country is a single organism and in lock step with the current administration. I have never voted for a republican in my life and never will, but now, somehow, all 350 million Americans just fit into one big bucket?

A lot of the United States historical influence and soft power comes from it being a nation of rules and laws. The credibility of the country provided a perception that it was a stable place to store value (investment in treasuries, greenbacks, etc). When the government is facilitating insider trading out in the open (repeatedly), we’re losing a lot more than money due to fraud.

Thanks for this. It’s amazing how quickly people are trying to rewrite history.

Adjacent question, does the transformation of the U.S. government into a fascist regime quality as a collapse?
tmountain··on I Quit Editing Photos
Not sure what you mean by real cameras. If you're talking about DSLR, then I would agree that they're in decline, but if you're talking about any non-phone camera, I would disagree. The mirrorless market is still quite healthy. Smartphones fill 80-90% of demand, the majority of the dedicated camera market is mirrorless. Commodity cameras are less popular, but demand for higher end dedicated cameras remains strong with new cameras (and innovations) coming out all the time.

Yeah, I was pretty bummed with how Chuck Norris and Hulk Hogan turned out in the end.
tmountain··on Conway's Game of Life, in real life
Personally, I can barely stomach reading LLM writing. I find myself closing lots of articles after a sentence or two. I wonder how this plays out longer-term regarding engagement.

Plutocracy or oligarchy with the amount of nepotism recently.
tmountain··on SBCL: A Sanely-Bootstrappable Common Lisp (2008) [pdf]
Often as a DSL (domain specific language) for extending applications at runtime and/or configuration. I wouldn't start a "serious" project in Lisp today; meaning, a project with investment behind it, but Lisp can be a real joy to work with, and I've used Clojure for countless hobby projects. Clojure, in particular, has lots of deployments around the tech industry, and it's the foundation of the Jepsen DB test suite, Datomic (an immutable DB), and Metabase, as a few examples. Walmart has a non-trivial amount of Clojure running in prod as well.

How well do local OSS models stack up to Claude?
tmountain··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
I’ve had semi regular downtime since I stayed using Claude about two months ago. I love it but I find it less reliable than alternatives. This is evidenced on their status page (regularly showing red bars).

Probably, I think hand coding is going the way of the dodo and the ox cart.
tmountain··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
It’s a subjective conversation but putting AI in the same category as a real artist is like saying someone that’s played a ton of first person shooters has gone to war. It might have a lot of observed information about what is involved in living, but real art comes from a lived experience, just like reading about going to Hawaii doesn’t mean you’ve been to Hawaii. Making something authentic requires synthesizing your life experience with the message you want to convey, and personalizing it in a way that puts an imprint of yourself into the work. Sure, it can render beautiful imagery, but I am speaking to a different issue entirely, and I don’t see any way that it can create in the way I am describing.

tmountain··on America, and probably the world, stands on a precipice
It’s not the type of behavior that you find in nations operating based on the rule of law. It’s emblematic of where the things are heading for the United States. A rapid descent into fascism (call it what it is).
tmountain··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
Art is a reaction to life. AI is thereby incapable of producing anything with any degree of authenticity unless it conveys the experience of being an agent to the world.

tmountain··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
Because the propaganda apparatus is out of control.
tmountain··on The Agentic AI Handbook: Production-Ready Patterns
I used to do it the way you were doing it. A friend went to a hackathon and everyone was using Cursor and insisted that I try it. It lets you set project level "rules" that are basically prompts for how you want things done. It has access to your entire repo. You tell the agent what you want to do, and it does it, and allows you to review it. It's that simple; although, you can take it much further if you want or need to. For me, this is a massive leap forward on its own. I'm still getting up to speed with reproducible prompt patterns like TFA mentions, but it's okay to work incrementally towards better results.

tmountain··on De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? (2025)
The U.S. chose to abandon the rules based international order that has made it a bastion of stability since WW2 when they decided they wanted a return to the monroe doctrine and that it was okay to arbitrarily invade countries and take their resources based on the impulses of a single person. The same person outwardly stated, "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace". If you think this is "as stable as it gets", then we're living on different planets.
