tma-1··on Intel to Cut 12,000 Jobs, Forecast Misses Amid PC Blight
So Intel is cutting 11% of its workforce, Goldman Sachs just reported a 56% drop in profits, Morgan Stanley had a 50% drop in profits, Netflix missed subscriber growth estimates etc... yet, the Dow just hit a 9-Month high, and the S&P500 is now above 2100.

The whole market is overvalued, not just the tech unicorns.

tma-1··on Introducing Kindle Oasis
E-Reader for the price of a new PS4, no thanks.
tma-1··on Goldman Sachs Finally Admits It Defrauded Investors During the Financial Crisis
GS makes around $10 billion a year, are you saying that the profits for the last 10 years or more came purely from sales of MBS?

I know no one has been imprisoned over the financial crisis mess, but settlements like these truly show that the justice department and the SEC are doing a pretty good job at penalising the banks. Combined, the fines probably add up to hundreds of billions, my personal opinion is that this is way more than the banks did from selling these securities.

tma-1··on The Swedish Number – Talk with a Random Swede
Lived there in 2012 for 6 months. What an amazing country, probably the best place in Europe to have a family. Stockholm is one of the most beautiful and safest capitals in the world.
tma-1··on Reddit for iOS and Android
Narwhal is one of the most underrated Reddit apps, so much better than AB and obviously superior to this new app.
tma-1··on The Financial Industry Is Having Its Napster Moment
I am not very cheerful about the markets being "-largely driven by passive investors. Traditional investors play a pivotal role in corporate governance and strategy, and reward management with a track record. Unfortunately the flows are becoming more and more driven by passive strategies, and this can potentially lead to negative externalities in the economy [1].

tma-1··on Leaked documents show strong business support for raising the minimum wage
It happens when large firms have a lot of extra liquidity and cheap debt. Look at FB and Google.
tma-1··on Leaked documents show strong business support for raising the minimum wage
Nope, they're dominated by a few because when a specific company becomes successful enough it can buy out the rest of the players.
tma-1··on Will minimum wage hikes lead to a huge boost in automation? Only if we're lucky
Let them automate and buy their own stocks back, it's gonna bit them in the ass sooner or later.
tma-1··on Publicly Funded Research Should Be Publicly Available
I have to say, we should all be super grateful for the OSS community. There's so much free non-publicly funded continuously supported OSS available within a click of a button. I am a data scientist, and everyday I am amazed how powerful the anaconda distribution (and its over 150 included packages) is. Is there any industry on Earth that has anything like OSS?
tma-1··on Anxiety and Depression Are Symptoms, Not Diseases
I have a close family member that suffers from treatment-resistant rapid cycling depression. Basically, throughout the year, she cycles from hypomania to normal to depression. And there's no real/consistent trigger for these episodes. There's a history of bipolar disorder in the family, so clearly it's genetic.
