tlogan··on Rahm Emanuel says U.S. should follow Australia's youth social media ban
So let me this straight. I will need an ID to go on internet but not to vote. He even talked about how requiring ID makes thar certain people are trapped in vicious cycle.

This is the exact policing we don't want government to do - but it is to protect children. So I guess we will go with it.

tlogan··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
This is definitely illegal in California: California Business and Professions Code Section 12024.2 BPC. It can result up to one year in jail.

I’m not sure how this article is true but seems like as a push to pass a similar law in North Carolina and New Jersey.

tlogan··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
This is definition of “hacking” the system: YC included question on its application that asked founders to describe a time they most successfully "hacked" a non-computer system to their advantage.

Sure it is not nice or moral but that is the life now.

tlogan··on Hemp ban hidden inside government shutdown bill
Things would work if we weren’t so damn tribal and if extremists on both sides weren’t the ones defining the discussion.

Here is a video for us: https://youtu.be/mRtGg9F5xyA

tlogan··on Hemp ban hidden inside government shutdown bill
Alcohol lobbyists did this. Amazing swamp :(

I was really stupid to think Republicans wanted a clean CR and Democrats wanted to help people with insurance.

Both sides wanted to slip in something their lobbyists wanted, and they did it. Win.

tlogan··on The Head of the Cybertruck Program Quit Tesla. Model Y Leader Left Hours Later
Or that CEO supports Trump?

(This is HN so I assume it is more about supporting Trump but I can be wrong)

tlogan··on The Head of the Cybertruck Program Quit Tesla. Model Y Leader Left Hours Later
True. But right now, they’re the automaker in the best shape.

Is there any other car company that isn’t on the brink of collapse?

(Ok maybe Toyota is going ok but they also have some structural issues as a business)

tlogan··on I Am Mark Zuckerberg
A friend of mine worked for a company with “cloud” in its name, but company had nothing to do with computer clouds.

He said they got at least two calls a day from angry people complaining that their “cloud” wasn’t working (he’s pretty sure most of them meant iCloud).

tlogan··on AWS outage shows internet users 'at mercy' of too few providers, experts say
I think it is a little complicated. For example, your service might be using full failover but you use API from other service which are down.

Or you might use BART to come to work and you got stuck: https://www.kqed.org/news/12060687/bart-resumes-service-but-...

tlogan··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I noticed the same thing and it seems to have gotten much worse around 8:55 a.m. Pacific Time.

By the way, Twilio is also down, so all those login SMS verification codes aren’t being delivered right now.

tlogan··on Marc Benioff: I no longer believe National Guard is needed for SF
I’ve been in San Francisco since 1992, and this is the worst it’s ever been.

The current attitude seems to be that everything is fine and nothing needs fixing. Then people are shocked when Trump wins (and let’s be honest, Trump is not exactly a great person).

tlogan··on Marc Benioff: I no longer believe National Guard is needed for SF
Honestly, I’ve never been brave enough to try it. My neighbor had a Tesla, and it got vandalized.

I do not know. I'm not MAGA while do have both progressive and conservative views (deepening on the subject) but the current environment is really really sad.

tlogan··on Marc Benioff: I no longer believe National Guard is needed for SF
> Should free speech be met with violence?

Free speech is overrated. We, the intellectuals, must make sure everyone is properly educated and understands that their thinking is dangerous to progress and humanity. /s

tlogan··on Marc Benioff: I no longer believe National Guard is needed for SF
There’s no way to fix San Francisco right now. If anyone disagrees with a proposed change, they just call it a “Trump policy.”

The sad part is that Trump talked so much nonsense and sh*t that you can find a quote to match almost any idea or policy, so any policy can be branded as his.

tlogan··on Marc Benioff: I no longer believe National Guard is needed for SF
Of course.

For anyone who thinks this is just “money talk,” try wearing a “Make America Great” hat in San Francisco.

That’s all I need to say about the sad state of politics here.

tlogan··on I almost got hacked by a 'job interview'
I honestly think AI can write much better. Sure, it needs a lot of input, but experienced AI users will get there.
tlogan··on Jeep pushed software update that bricked all 2024 Wrangler 4xe models
I assume this is related to the new feature that lets you start the engine without being able to drive the car (it’s called “lock start” or something like that).

And the Wrangler is the only Stellantis brand that still has some value. Yet somehow, they’re finding a way to ruin even that.

tlogan··on Global Peace Index 2025
Croatia is a great country, and so are the others from the former Yugoslavia. But Croatia’s “peacefulness” depends very heavily on the of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.
tlogan··on Global Peace Index 2025
I have to say, this is a very strange list. Croatia as one of the most peaceful countries? More peaceful than Norway?

What exactly is this list supposed to represent?

tlogan··on CPI for all items rises 0.4% in August, 2.9% YoY; shelter and food up
I have a theory about why rents are rising faster than everything else: all those companies that bought up houses for cash are finally trying to make real money off them.

And they’ll keep doing it, since calling that out isn’t politically beneficial.

tlogan··on CPI for all items rises 0.4% in August, 2.9% YoY; shelter and food up
But house prices did not increase.

According to Redfin, the median home sale price was up 1.2% YoY in July 2025. [1]

tlogan··on CPI for all items rises 0.4% in August, 2.9% YoY; shelter and food up
I got downvoted for asking this - but let me ask again:

The key driver for inflation seems to rents (technically listed as "shelter"). Shelter has a large weight in the CPI basket, and its 12-month increase was 3.6% (comparing to 2.9%).

Am I wrong here in reading the data? If I’m wrong please correct me. I assume the downvote is because I’m not correct.

My naive expectation was:

- Rents would go down because deportation of illegals will reduce demand

- Prices of goods would skyrocket because of tariffs

But instead, rents went way up.

Could this be driven by the push to return to the office?

tlogan··on CPI for all items rises 0.4% in August, 2.9% YoY; shelter and food up
If you look at the numbers, the key driver is rents (technically listed as "shelter").

Shelter has a large weight in the CPI basket, and its 12-month increase was 3.6% (comparing to 2.9%)

Rents in San Francisco (and LA) are skyrocketing. And that cannot be easily explained.

Not sure what’s causing this. What do you think?

tlogan··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
The rule is from April 2, 2025 but we were all thinking about TACOs.

But the congress passed the bill to permanently repeals the legal basis for the de minimis exemption so no more TACOs. And I love TACOs…

tlogan··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Both UPS and FedEx have been handling this correctly for years. They provide a simple option where you can choose who pays the tariffs (the shipper or the recipient). If it is the recipient, you just include their email and phone number so they can be contacted.

The “only” difference now is that the $800 limit no longer applies, so every shipment must include this information.

Which basically means end of Temu, Alibaba express, majority of Etsy sellers, etc.

tlogan··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
I just want to explain how I understand this, and please correct me if I am wrong.

In theory, importers have been required to provide a Certificate of Analysis (COA) since around 2003. This comes from federal TSCA regulations as well as California’s RoHS requirements (bill SB 20).

But in practice, nobody really followed those rules because they could claim the “de minimis” import exemption.

The problem now is that Trump issued Executive Order 14324, “Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for All Countries.” This means that shipments valued at $800 or less from any country are no longer eligible for de minimis treatment. So in order to properly calculate taxes you need CoA.

tlogan··on Show HN: Smart email filters to unfuck your email
If you are disciplined and unsubscribe from mailing lists, you will stop getting most of the spam in your inbox. Sure, your spam folder might still be full - but with actual spam.

Honestly, I think it all comes down to discipline. You should immediately unsubscribe if you do not want someone’s newsletter.

But my problem is different: I get a lot of emails that I do want to receive, but I do not need to read them right away - or sometimes never. For example, mortgage monthly statements, which I really only need at tax time.

tlogan··on When did AI take over Hacker News?
Yes. And this comment illustrates the trend: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44865256

But let me say something serious. AI is profoundly reshaping software development and startups in ways we haven’t seen in decades:

1) So many well-paying jobs may soon become obsolete.

2) A startup could be easily run with only three people: developer, marketing, and support.
