It would be cool to see other people's drawings... maybe as simple as a hashtag and a feed of tweets?
tkzed49··on The US climate law is fueling a factory frenzy
Yet all Republicans in the Senate and House voted against it.

Just some unsolicited advice for you: your comments read as antagonistic and arrogant, and are neither going to get you useful information nor make you any friends. If you're genuinely curious about how this is possible, why not ask good-faith questions about their experience, and then make a judgment quietly to yourself? Instead, you're invalidating them from a position of ignorance. Even in other cases where you might be right, you still look childish and insufferable.
tkzed49··on G9.js: Automatically Interactive Graphics
"When someone interacts with the graphics, for example by trying to drag an element to a new position, g9 optimizes over the space of possible values for your data to find a set of values that comes closest to creating the change."

This clearly isn't trying to be Processing. Obviously it's not revolutionary in terms of being productive, but it's a super cool concept and seems unique to me! The dragon example is particularly telling. You can grab any node and it tries to fit the fractal to wherever you move it.

tkzed49··on Ferromagnetic half levitation of LK-99-like synthetic samples
It could be the sheer volume of discussion. I've seen a lot of these posts and this is the first time I've read this question.

you can always fetch data from any domain, iff that server sets the correct CORS headers, unless I'm misunderstanding.

tkzed49··on Clever code considered harmful
this just isn't the usage I observe; const/let is typically checked by the linter and auto-fixed. It's just another idiosyncracy of JavaScript.
tkzed49··on Please fix your spinner
Surprising, I figured this would be CSS animations.

edit: it is, it's just also a React app

tkzed49··on Please fix your spinner
Surely someone can do better than this, but the spinning one looks broken to me, as if something snapped and it just began rotating violently. Why do some dots have different shades if not to convey the same motion as the rotation? It might as well be any random image spinning on the page. Maybe it feels like there's a lack of intention?
tkzed49··on Soylent Acquired by Starco Brands
not sure that tallow and lard are necessary, but here's an interesting article that does suggest frying with saturated fats such as coconut oil or ghee, or alternatively, unrefined mustard seed or canola oil. It also has a table with data for several kinds of fats. The disadvantage to animal-derived fats, according to this, is the long-chain saturated fatty acids.

Cooking with virgin olive oil is fine and may actually be more safe relative to other common oils.

Can you explain your thoughts? I remember there being some concern about the health impacts of seed oils, but I'm not finding anything conclusive. This article seems to cover quite a few arguments:

tkzed49··on A neat XOR trick
It's correct to omit constants from big O, but in the article W is a distinct input variable so the usage is valid. The size of the window W is bound by N, not a constant 26.
tkzed49··on On the subject of earwax and unsupported medical arguments
That seems completely different—the active ingredient in debrox is peroxide, which foams up and in theory loosens the earwax (a cerumenolytic). If you want to be cheap use diluted hydrogen peroxide.

But there seems to be mixed evidence as to whether it's any better than distilled water.

tkzed49··on What makes a senior engineer? Writing software vs. building systems
Yeah I mean this is a cool concept assuming that you get to choose which "archetype" you progress into, rather than it being dictated by the organization you're working in. It's less cool when you get forced into the people management archetypes, which I feel are way more common in many places, because of the natural progression that GP described.
tkzed49··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
Recycling sucks, but you could replace "biodegradable" with "industrially compostable" or even "ecologically safer". I'm not convinced that getting newspaper out of landfills is on the same order of importance as not littering plastics into the environment. Paper seems like a huge win over plastic and even if you have to use a "biodegradable" plastic, at least it's actually feasible to compost it.
tkzed49··on Show HN: Angularis – like Tetris, but based on triangles
It would be cool if you rendered the (triangular) grid, and showed a drop preview. In its current state, I never have enough confidence to hard drop.

tkzed49··on How to Stand Out with Your Job Application as a Junior Software Developer
I don't think you're wrong about how people perceive this. But, it's funny because at my "top-ranked" CS college you could absolutely graduate having coded the exact same guided CS projects as everyone else (about 2 years worth of classes, which, granted, is more time than most coding schools).

You _could_ take electives with complicated freeform projects, or that mimicked actual software engineering, or that focused on the state of the art in various CS specializations, but you didn't need to.

tkzed49··on My challenge to the web performance community
You don't really need to track users. Send back a few timings: LCP, FID, whatever, and nothing else. That's all you need to look at the distribution of real world performance data and compute useful statistics.

You don't need to associate data points with any kind of user profile. Sure, you _could_ maybe mine some noisy timings for user fingerprint entropy but... if you're building something more complicated than a blog, real performance data is very useful and the privacy implication is relatively minimal.

tkzed49··on On yak shaving and <md-block>, a new HTML element for Markdown
While I think you can compile your markdown in most cases, this is a two line fix: set the style to display: none and remove it after compiling.

Sure, if I suspend disbelief and assume that no other search engines or navigation services were used that do similar tracking—but the GP was specifically calling out QR codes, and they use the website anyway.
tkzed49··on NYT journalist hacked with Pegasus after reporting on previous hacking attempts
What exactly are you suggesting the QR code is doing? My phone shows me the URL encoded by the QR code before opening, and I've never seen one with any additional information in the URL. They're not dynamically generating QR codes for you...
