or just

fs.createReadStream('file.txt').pipe(fs.createWriteStream('new-file.txt'))

Streams are too slow you say?

fs.writeFileSync('new-file.txt', fs.readFileSync('file.txt'))

I've never had a problem with no explicit copy, but I am very happy it has been added...

tkone··on Yarn 1.0: Workspaces, auto-merging lockfiles, selective versions resolutions
> If yarn had been approached with more senior developers I think it could have replaced npm entirely.

Some very senior developers were involved in it's development including the original author of Babel, someone who has been a core member of and contributor to jQuery, Rails, Rust & Ember, people who have/currently work on Chrome, Node core, etc etc etc.

If those people aren't "senior" developers, you're going to have to explain what you mean by that.

Also replacing npm means replacing npm as the bundled package management tool that comes with node, and likely replacing the fact that they use the npm registry.

tkone··on Whose Internet History Should Be Purchased First?
Because there is no such thing as anonymity on the internet, especially if you're able to buy browsing history.

AOL released a slew of anonymous search results in the early 2000s as a dataset. It took a few weeks (months maybe?) to start to determine who these people were based on patterns found in the data.[1]

Even with aggregate or partially anonymized data you're going to be able to identify individuals based on habits and patterns.

tkone··on How Uber Used Secret “Greyball” Tool to Deceive Authorities Worldwide
Just because a lawyer has said something is "OK" doesn't make it legal. Lawyers (even expensive ones) give bad advice all the time for lots of various reasons, or advice that isn't bad at the time, but bad going forward.

Did the lawyer understand this was being used to circumvent the law? Or did they understand it was to prevent violations of their terms of service? Is it possible the company either changed the plan after the lawyer saw it, or didn't fully explain the capacities to the lawyer?

Accused of a crime? Likely not to many of the scenarios you mentioned. Indicted on criminal charges? Likely yes, but that's why we have criminal indictments. It makes it much harder for the government to falsely accuse you of a crime.

when leftists want to kick people out of the country or be supported by the KKK or grope/molest woman, etc we can be worried about your thought experiment.

when the candidate you choose to support openly wants to make life harder, more difficult or even non-existent for groups of people you've chosen your side and be prepared to defend it.

tkone··on Windows patch KB 3139929: When a security update is not a security update
This is great. Nagging people might actually get them to upgrade to a supported, secure browser. I literally see nothing wrong with this.
tkone··on Node.js 5.0 Released
i have an app that was written for 0.8 three years ago. it is running on 4.2 with no modification. (it doesn't use any binary add ons). javascript is almost entirely backwards compatible because they can't break the web.

Other apps that require binary add ons required me to install the latest versions from NPM -- one one of them required ANY changes to how the API was called and it was extremely minor.

Waiting 2 years to upgrade the engine your code is running on is not horrible and requires much less pain

tkone··on Old Uber source code on NPM
someone did an `npm publish` without having either `private: true` or a separate private registry config set in the package.json.

You CAN unpublish it's sort of not easy since replication.

tkone··on Npm install could be dangerous
The good part about npm is that if you run it as `sudo` it will de-authenticate when it's running any script in it's package files. So at least those won't be run with sudo permission.

tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
Must be nice to have enough money to pay the astronomical rents that a doorman building costs!
tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
The last fifteen packages we've ordered were via the USPS. Either someone at Amazon thinks this is hilarious to mess with people, or their system for selecting carriers is oddly tuned.
tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
How do you fit a 45lbs crib in a box that is 4'x4'x5' in your mail box?

That's gotta be a huge mailbox sir!

OR the post office could end its monopoly of your mailbox...

tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
I would so happily pay more to choose my carrier. When I started Amazon Prime several years ago the amount I ordered from Amazon skyrocketed -- 2 day delivery for free? Crap, I don't ever have to go to Target, Toys'r'Us, the pet store, etc ever again.
tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
That might be exactly what needs to happen. The post office needs to fail so it can be rebuild in a better state. Allowing it to continue to exist as it stands is certainly no option.
tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
Tried that. We just get another slip since they're still not carrying the packages. It really does depend on your post office. Bed-Stuy? No way!
tkone··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
Agreed - the real issue is that USPS is a horribly managed and run organization. Sadly since they will continue to exist in this state, I feel the only recourse is to get Amazon, which does listen to customers, to either force change upon it (like with Sunday delivery!) or allow customers to opt-out.

tkone··on Unless you're a founder, startups do not pay out
and would also be against my confidentiality agreement. These are hypothetical numbers. Lets say it's .5% at $0.30 -- the numbers are variables, doesn't change what the outcome is.
tkone··on Unless you're a founder, startups do not pay out
You're a crazy man. I've not gotten paid before because we had no money, but that didn't stop our founder from vacationing in France. (Different startup than this last one).
tkone··on Unless you're a founder, startups do not pay out
I have never joined a startup for the money, either in the short term (hilarious) or the long term, but rather for the plethora of opportunities. All those things are great and decent resume builders, but in reality there is a unsaid agreement that when you work for a startup you are ALSO doing it for the payout at the end -- the problem is that payout is not yours unless you're a founder.
tkone··on Unless you're a founder, startups do not pay out
Or you can even get that nice "VP of Engineering" title and then they say "oh he is too valuable to stop coding so we'll hire an SVP of Engineering -- you know, a professional manager." because you've foolishly spent your 6 months there rewriting the product from the ground up.
tkone··on Ask HN: Career advice for a 23 year-old
Sick it up and join the real world. I've been working since I was 14 years old due to the economic realities of my family.

Don't want a real office job? Go volunteer or join something like the peace corps. You'll get to travel, feel good about yourself, and help the world.

tkone··on I don't want Javascript promises
That post is pretty incoherent. Try a full sentence out for a change. Being able to communicate effectively is an mordant skill. I'm still not sure what you're complaining about.
tkone··on The New Grooveshark
+1. I was using marionette, but again, it's buying into an entire system. I ended up writing my own lightweight (15 lines?) version of their region manager and use that now.

(Marionette is a great project though!)
