Thomas, thanks for injecting sanity into these discussions.
tkahn6··on The Return of the Stylus
That's one of those things where the medium is itself the interesting part of the art, not the final product.

It's 'good art' precisely because the artist is so hindered by the iPad.

tkahn6··on It's like JSON. but fast and small.
This is an interesting coincidence. I happened upon this a few days ago for the first time and it worked out really wonderfully.

I needed to transfer data from a python script to a ruby script. Ended up looking like this:

Python script:

    import msgpack
    msg = msgpack.packb(some_data)
    sys.stdout.write(msg)
Ruby script:

    require 'msgpack'
    msg = `python my_script.py`
    some_data = MessagePack.unpack(msg)
tkahn6··on Anonymous Israeli blogger Eishton offers a deal to the Israel Defense Forces
I'm not contesting that it's innaccurate. You have no basis to assert that it's for propaganda purposes.
tkahn6··on Anonymous Israeli blogger Eishton offers a deal to the Israel Defense Forces
> Reporting these as KIA is better for the IDF

This is the crux of the issue. This a weak opinion. You jump immediately to 'propaganda' as the reason that soldiers who commit suicide are labeled KIA when there are many other possibilities.

1) Do you know if there are in fact different official classifications of active-duty soldiers deaths?

2) Do you know if they're labeled KIA for benefits purposes?

3) Wouldn't this make Israel's enemies look better since it lowers the civilians to combatant death ratio?

You, without qualification, immediately assume this is a propaganda. That's the problem I have and that's why it's a weak comment. It has nothing to do with whether I agree with you or not.

tkahn6··on Anonymous Israeli blogger Eishton offers a deal to the Israel Defense Forces
Is there any precedent or evidence at all for this conspiracy theory?
tkahn6··on Anonymous Israeli blogger Eishton offers a deal to the Israel Defense Forces
... what does this have to do with propaganda?

This is about the IDF keeping secret/private the details surrounding the deaths of 126 soldiers.

jacquesm, you're quite a valuable asset to this community but this is a reddit-level comment.

tkahn6··on Is Poke Proof That The Facebook API Is A Trojan Horse?
So here's something that just happened 5 minutes ago.

A girl I've been snapchatting with texted me and asked why the Poke app is just like snapchat. I asked her if it was better, and she said 'I haven't used it much, but it looks much better', and now we're using it instead of snapchat.

Pretty fascinating. She downloaded the app because they're advertising it on their mobile app.

tkahn6··on Anonymous takes down over 550 Israeli sites, wipes databases
Well that is an interesting proposal but Israel is occupying the West Bank and blockading Gaza out of security concerns, not out of any sort of program of racial subjugation (remember that there are Arabs and other ethnic groups in Israel that have full rights and representation under Israeli law).

By that I mean to say that if there existed the state of affairs, the political will, where a totally non-violent path was desirable and possible for Palestinians to pursue, there wouldn't be a need for these policies which they would hypothetically be protesting against in the first place.

tkahn6··on Anonymous takes down over 550 Israeli sites, wipes databases
I appreciate your analysis, but no, the rockets are more fatal and dangerous than script kiddies hitting "Go" on their LOIC application from the comfort of their homes, far away from danger. Taking down websites and leaking passwords is inconsequential juvenility when compared to the hell that Israelis in S'derot have been living in for years and years and what citizens of Tel Aviv are experiencing now.

Hamas is a homophobic, misogynistic, illiberal, theocratic terrorist organization and Anonymous is supporting them.

tkahn6··on Unbelievable: The IDF Has Gamified Its War Blog
The points thing has been up for months, why outrage now?

Oh right. Probably the same reason there is outrage now and not in the past few months when 600 rockets have been fired at Israeli civilians.

tkahn6··on Social Media Companies Have Absolutely No Idea How to Handle the Gaza Conflict
I've been following their updates all day and haven't seen any that have 'glorified murder'.
tkahn6··on Social Media Companies Have Absolutely No Idea How to Handle the Gaza Conflict
Unlike in Europe and here in America, a war is happening in Israel and all Israelis under 45 are either active soldiers or reserve soldiers. I have family in Tel Aviv that was forced to run into a bunker earlier today. I have a friend from high school that is stationed at the Gaza border. It's not an abstract, far away event. The tweets are directly relevant to Israeli society.

No. For all you or I know this person is a better, happier, more intelligent person than you or I.

In the last 15 seconds of the video they say that it's actually because once you get far enough away from earth, the stars are moving so fast away that they redshift to infrared.

tkahn6··on Measure results, not hours
The hourly rate thing has always bothered me. At my internship at Bloomberg the maximum amount of billable hours per week was 40 and usually they'd expect you to put in 8 hours a day. More often than not, I'd finish an assigned task before the day or week was through or I'd be 'direction blocked' where I would be waiting for approval in a design/architecture decision from my mentor or manager while they were busy with something else.

I would find side projects to work on, a form of '20% time', but I always felt really uncomfortable with the whole situation. Was I expected to forgo pay when there wasn't enough work for me? It was a really weird experience. It wasn't like I was a student working part time, I was living alone in NYC over the summer and had rent and food to pay for.
