tjbiddle··on I looked through attacks in my access logs
Most admins blocking regions aren't so selective; rather than blocking North Korea - they'll block everything not USA.

As an American living abroad, it's not uncommon for me to not be able to access a website I need (or want) to, and I need to pop onto my VPN.

tjbiddle··on Uber and Lyft paid SFO about $50M last year
I don't think you understand how 1099's work.
tjbiddle··on Show HN: Heynote – A dedicated scratchpad for developers
Amazing! While I come from a tech background (DevOps) I no longer work in tech (Operate my own companies - completely unrelated).

Point being: This still fits my needs perfectly well as a general scratchpad! I usually have dozens of separate text files spread around the place, this should be a good fit to replace.

Suggestions: - Make it clear that things are auto-saving - Option to save a block to file - Option to change the background color of alternating blocks; whether that's just allowing two colors - dark and light to alternate - or on an individual basis - Allow titling of blocks and some sort of table of contents - I can see this eventually having dozens that I'd like to reference and quick jump to

tjbiddle··on My failed attempt at using a closet as an office
Bonus: Much easier to justify as a business expense if you're self employed for the tax deduction.
tjbiddle··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
Could come up with a thousand reasons, but if you want a quick "Fun" reason and a quick "Utilitarian" reason:

Fun: I travel a ton, I love looking at where I went to relive the experience. Especially if it was a recent travel and I'm showing things off to friends asking about it. I just open up the Timeline and say "Okay, well this day we flew in - then we took a 4 hour car ride, then we hung in this town for a few days, then took a boat to this island for some camping, then flew over to this city for a week, and..."

Utilitarian: As a US Citizen living abroad, I apply for the FEIE tax exemption every year to help me keep my first ~$120k as untaxed from the Feds (Should be my entire income, but no - US needs to tax on citizenship and not residency like nearly everyone else.. but I digress). For this rule, I need to have full 24-hour days in foreign territory, so for my documentation to ensure I'm still within my limit, I like pulling up Timeline - snapping a screenshot/export and saving it for later should I ever be audited.

tjbiddle··on 15 years ago, I helped design Google Maps
My biggest gripe is trying to read road names.

So many times I'll see a road name, and I start to zoom in - only to have it now disappear - to then zoom out again and it doesn't show at all - to zoom in again and then 50/50 I can see it.

Drives me nuts.

Where I'm living (Indonesia) most people reference parts of town by the major road nearby. I try to learn where the hell I am in a certain new locale by looking at the road name (They aren't often seen on physical signs, either) and it takes me forever to find it. Doesn't help that it's a regular practice that the road name changes after some time, even though it's the same road.

tjbiddle··on OpenAI Shoves a Data Journalist and Violates Federal Law
Didn't sound like they refused. The police officers said it themselves: It's the day before Thanksgiving.

Yeah - I get it, law says "immediately", but the journalist needs to chill and just try again Monday. It's a holiday week. Barking up the wrong tree.

tjbiddle··on OpenAI Shoves a Data Journalist and Violates Federal Law
Watching the videos on the article, and this journalist is coming off pretty arrogant.

Okay, I understand that you have a right to request those documents - but it's the day before Thanksgiving, and the right people aren't available. Yes, I get it - the law says "Immediately" if at the headquarters, but give some slack - it's a holiday. Come back on Monday.

The guy got shoved because he was repeatedly told not to be on the private property, and instead he decided to walk in - and then start claiming he's on the sidewalk (Which she, now they were). He was told he was trespassing, he refused, and they have a right to use reasonable force to remove him. Considering they did that directly in front of a police officer, I think highlights the OpenAI guy is fine.

This reeks of like "I'm right in one thing - so I'm right in everything". People are human man, again - come back Monday. Go enjoy time with your family and stop trying to pick a fight right now.

tjbiddle··on Aircraft seat crushed mobile phone battery, caused a fire on passenger plane
Yes - Lay flat seats will be electrically powered
tjbiddle··on World's most popular painter sent his followers after me because of my review
Skimmed the initial review. Doesn't even look remotely bad. Sure, some negativity - but nothing terrible.

Never heard of Devon before, his stuff looks good, but sounds like the artist and the fans need their ego checked.

Hardly news worthy

tjbiddle··on Microsoft SEC 8-K: IRS is seeking an additional tax payment of $29B
The IRS works out payment plans and reduced payments very regularly, for both citizens and corporations alike.
tjbiddle··on Apple Bricked my AirPods and now wants me to buy new ones
Because Apple.

The mass market are shills for Apple products.

Don't get me wrong - I love my MacBook; but I don't buy it because Apple - I just happen to love MacOS and the hardware.

But I hate their phones and headphones.

In my co-working center, probably 75% of people with over-ear headphones have AirPod Max. I did my own research and decided no way in hell I wanted those, nor would suggest for my partner (Who loves Apple). Both of us happy with Sony MX headsets. I laugh internally whenever I see the other people because I'm sure they bought it just on brand recognition alone.

tjbiddle··on Starlink Direct to Cell
The US is fairly unique in that everyone still texts. The rest of the world use apps that need data, like WhatsApp.

While SMS would be great for low-bandwidth use cases like this, most people don't use it to the point where having contacts accessible with it on the other end would be an issue.

tjbiddle··on Bill to ban hidden fees in California signed into law
1. Taxes can change quickly, and it's a pain in the ass to keep up with. If you're now needing to deal with changing the printed price on tens, hundreds, thousands of items - I can't even imagine.

2. Online sales you won't even be able to calculate it until the customer puts in their shipping information. And no, they can't figure that out beforehand as there are a myriad of reasons why where their IP is does not mean where it's being shipped to, which is where the taxes need to be calculated.

tjbiddle··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
It says he drowned... assumed because of the reason OP gave. Besides, moot point giving you're referencing Wikipedia to begin with.

> Hippasus is sometimes credited with the discovery of the existence of irrational numbers, following which he was drowned at sea. Pythagoreans preached that all numbers could be expressed as the ratio of integers, and the discovery of irrational numbers is said to have shocked them. However, the evidence linking the discovery to Hippasus is unclear.

> Pappus merely says that the knowledge of irrational numbers originated in the Pythagorean school, and that the member who first divulged the secret perished by drowning.

tjbiddle··on D.C.'s ban on cashless businesses takes effect
My payment processors (Shopify, PayPal, Klarna, etc.) don't treat debit cards any differently than a credit card. Those are all huge payment processors; so it's not like a special snowflake here.

Since we're on HN, I'll mention Stripe. I don't use Stripe - but they act the same way.

All of these don't bill for "credit card" they bill for "card".

tjbiddle··on D.C.'s ban on cashless businesses takes effect
> You don’t. The merchant you are buying from is choosing to pay 3% for credit card payments because they believe incentivizing people to pay with credit cards will result in them earning more (via higher prices or higher margin goods) than incentivizing them to pay with debit/cash.

Why are you putting the onus on the retailer? Don't assume malice or intent from them.

I operate online businesses; so 99% of my sales are credit card. I get the occasional wire/ACH or a check in the mail. I'd love to not pay 3% of all my revenue to credit card processors, but most people want to use credit card / PayPal / etc. because it's more convenient for them.

I'm happy to offer a discount if someone wants to pay via a non-credit card, but I don't raise my prices because of it. I just have to suck it up and eat that cost. My margins are not high and I would've made about 27% more last year had I not had to do that. You're welcome.

tjbiddle··on Show HN: A map that tells you if a NYC cafe has WiFi, a restroom, and an outlet
I expect very simply! Looks like you could add locations anywhere in the world to the 'NYC' map should you really want. It'd be up to OP to split that up into different cities.

Personally, I feel just having it be global and allowing people to zoom in is best.

tjbiddle··on How to see bright, vivid images in your mind’s eye (2016)
I think you missed the point.
tjbiddle··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
I've never understood this.

Sure, don't do that as is - But it's not hard to just curl the script, read it to confirm it looks okay, then run it.

tjbiddle··on I fixed a bug the other day
Unfortunately this same attitude bleeds into consumer-facing customer support so often.

I'll find a bug, and message support about it.

Yes - I've cleared cookies, Yes - I've tried incognito, Yes - I've rebooted, Yes - I've tried a separate browser, Yes - I've tried a VPN, Yes - I've tried different DNT, Yes - I've tried incognito, Yes - I've tried rebooting, Yes - I've tried an entirely separate device.

Infuriating. I'm sure it catches plenty of tech illiterate people's garbage bug reports that are just their issue - but so often I'm left banging my head on a desk when I know it's an actual problem.

tjbiddle··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
What drives me nuts is using the "Search this area" feature once I zoom in. Especially if there's an add anywhere in a 20mi radius.

Google Maps usually shows far too much stuff, so I zoom into the area where I am and want to just search that square so I can browse the list easier.

But then it'll zoom out and auto-select the first ad miles away - completely defeating the purpose.

tjbiddle··on Ask HN: Is Slack having some trouble?
If it's done properly, it shouldn't need to be manually updated.
tjbiddle··on Young people are flocking to astrology
Eh, living in an area that has far too many astrology-nuts - it's less about flirting and more about forcing their ideology on you.

I'd say less akin to racism, and more akin to religion.

tjbiddle··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
> The auto-delete part is slightly more worrying, but if you don't use WhatsApp during 30 days, your account and group membership probably isn't very precious.

I've had plenty of times where I'm offline for a few weeks. Would cut it very close to having my entire account deleted.

I'd like a period where I'm offline for months.

tjbiddle··on Personal relations as a manager
Superior, as a noun, quite literally is "Having higher rank"

If you're in management, you have the decision making power - and are the superior.

tjbiddle··on Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard
I was thinking the same thing. So much emphasis on Call of Duty. Did a quick search of Activision's most profitable games and Call of Duty is definitely #1 by nearly 3x the next, but there are plenty of other heavy-hitters to make it diversified.
tjbiddle··on Proof you can do hard things
I like this approach as well.

My current explanation for this is more along the lines of being well-rounded. By being exposed to a number of different skills and learnings throughout your education, your more likely to be able to connect the dots in other areas - and just hold better conversations with people.

Don't need to ace all your classes for that, but put in the effort to try and structurally understand whatever it is you're coming across.

tjbiddle··on SpaceX rocket launches Euclid space telescope to map the 'dark universe'
Anyone else feel as if the title and first few paragraphs give more credit to SpaceX rather than the Euclid team?

SpaceX launches things all the time; I feel Euclid is the impressive bit here.
