titojankowski··on Tropical forests are emitting more carbon than oxygen, study finds (2017)
If all "tropical forests" were in a single country, at 0.425 Gigatons per year of emissions that country would be the #14 most polluting in the world! [1]

The article above estimates 0.425 Gigatons of carbon dioxide per year being emitted by from the world's tropical forests. This is 1.3% of yearly global emissions! [2]

What if forests flipped from friend to foe, with poorly managed forests becoming liabilities?

titojankowski··on Tropical forests are emitting more carbon than oxygen, study finds (2017)
“In many cases throughout the tropics you have selective logging, or smallholder farmers removing individual trees for fuel wood. These losses can be relatively small in any one place, but added up across large areas they become considerable."

Also, the research paper itself has a helpful satellite map in the appendix: https://sci-hub.tw/10.1126/science.aam5962

titojankowski··on “Air Carbon” Planter Made with Direct Air Capture Technology
Excited to launch this! We worked with Carbon Engineering to get their carbon captured using direct air capture. We believe it's the first consumer product to use direct air capture.
titojankowski··on Ask HN: How do we save the planet?
cool! dont bother reading the negative crap, it's pervasive and people get addicted to it. just keep your eyes tuned for solutions and more will appear.

titojankowski··on Scientists Breed Bacteria That Make Tiny High-Energy Carbon Rings
I'm not familiar with "cyclic organic structures". The article says they're hard for chemists to make and perhaps biology makes it easier -- but why are they useful in the first place?
titojankowski··on Ask HN: Most compelling evidence of climate change?
I think HN is a great platform to discuss climate solutions because it isn’t a climate change community. Curious to hear from others as well!

To me, how “real” something is correlates roughly with the number of people pursuing it, and how vigorously they pursue it.

To that end, we started Impossible Labs in 2016, skipped over the whole “climate debate” of the 1990s and 2000s, and started putting our full time work into climate solutions.

That’s why I helped create http://airminers.org. It’s an index of 80+ startups and projects pursuing climate change as an economic opportunity, mining carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. To me this is pretty solid “proof”, though by no means science-based.

However, I also wrote a popular article “no one gives a fuck about climate change”: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14492180

The article’s HN discussion sparked the Carbon Doomsday project and git repo: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16332595

titojankowski··on Carbon Calculator (by Trees for the Future)
I tried their calculator with 18 tons (36,000 pounds). It said ~1050 trees @ $0.10 per tree, so $105 total per year. vs $45 or whatever on Terrapass.

Let’s shoot for an order of magnitude difference. How might we sell it for $4.50 a year?

titojankowski··on Wipeout: Human role in climate change removed from science report
A recent survey from Yale shows “A majority of Americans (63%) say they are “very” or “somewhat” worried about the issue”.

So we’ve got “permission”. Let’s get to work. I’m excited about putting my efforts into solutions. Here’s a few: http://airminers.org

titojankowski··on Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Is Greening Earth
Perhaps this additional plant growth is the key to the growth of the seasonal "rise and fall" of carbon dioxide since 1958. (see http://carbondoomsday.com/)

i.e. in 1962 the seasonal cycle up-down was roughly 6 parts per million. By 2017 it is 40% bigger, 10 parts per million.

Full article from Nature: https://sci-hub.tw/https://www.nature.com/articles/nclimate3...

If plants sucked up more of it we would be all set -- though carbon dioxide keeps rising in the atmosphere for now :O

titojankowski··on Carbon Calculator (by Trees for the Future)

titojankowski··on Lyme Disease: The First Epidemic of Climate Change
Fascinating to think the climate has so many different variables. Such a large system, a little pressure in one spot results in a spike somewhere else.

“They must be stopped, she believes, and the 2015 CDC map shows why. In it, ticks are seen moving into places that only a decade before had been considered ill-suited to support them, from the Allegheny Mountains to the Mississippi Valley, from western Pennsylvania south and east across Kentucky and Tennessee. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, I scapularis ‘appears to have expanded in all cardinal directions’, the CDC researchers reported in language that was sometimes remarkable and alarming.”

titojankowski··on Why aren't we going for carbon frames (2017)
and since this article is 6 months old, any updates in the meantime?
titojankowski··on Why aren't we going for carbon frames (2017)
I’m rooting for the future of carbon materials as a way to monetize atmospheric cabon dioxide. So this article pointed out a few opportunities for carbon:

1. robotic assembly of carbon products to lower costs

2. eliminating use of synthetic polymers in the process

3. learning more about “carbon nanotubes are asbestos”

Agree with your logic regarding avoiding additional emissions. The extra piece that this RFS add is, we've got about a trillion tons of extra carbon already up in the atmosphere, how do we mine it?
