tired_man··on A-10 replacement? USAF strategy calls for 'future CAS platform'
Yeah, that's not happening :-)

Really _close_ air support really isn't a job for fast movers.

F-35 is too fast for close work.

tired_man··on A-10 replacement? USAF strategy calls for 'future CAS platform'
Any aircraft that is useful to the poor buggers on the ground will be close enough to worry about having RPGs fired at it, let alone "advanced anti-airfcraft systems."

Calling that out as a reason to retire the A-10 is kinda bogus. The A-10 was designed from the very beginning to absorb that sort of damage and continue it's mission.

Fairchild Republic got on someone's bad side some years back and that resulted in the production contract being cancelled. Since then, it's performed like a superstar in every deployment.

There is no viable replacement available.

Just ask anyone who's called God for one and see how happy were with the service.

tired_man··on Ask HN: Can you open this PDF?
It has forms. The plugins choke on forms when the it is password protected from modification. Reader doesn't have that issue, only the plugins.

Good luck!

tired_man··on South Korea and U.S. Beef Up Efforts to Detect Missing North Korean Submarines
Good luck finding those diesel-electric boats.

If they manage to creep away from the AOE, they could be anywhere.

tired_man··on [haskell] Why we don't chuck our readers into web apps
> The key issue is that upgrading is almost always a manual process that is likely beyond the skill level of a home-user.

Seriously? Beyond the skill level? All I need to do is login and click the check for updates button, then click apply. In fact, that's as complex as it has ever been for all any of my routers for going on 10-15 years.

IMHO, if a home user can't manage that much, chances are slim they could even drive a browser.

tired_man··on [dead]
Send sticky glitter, instead.

Obviously not poison and damned annoying to sweep/vacuum up.

tired_man··on Why I’m dumping Google Chrome
Same here.
tired_man··on Why I’m dumping Google Chrome
The time isn't an issue at that level. They have specific tests for various situations and the time it takes, it takes. I've seen banks spend upwards of 6 months testing before instituting software changes to trader/production systems.

As for capable IT departments, on the large corporate scale, they fairly bulge with competent people. Obviously not everyone's a star, but they don't suffer idiots to live.

I don't upgrade anything until it's been on the street for a time. I let other people play canary.

tired_man··on Never realized that Gmail has a Storage Limit
It does, but not really. You can get another gmail account and have another 15GB.

There are tools to sync and use multiple gdrives.

tired_man··on Sexy cyborg goes pentesting
That's wonderful :-)
tired_man··on Waifu2x: Image Super-Resolution for Anime-Style-Art
Those tweaked images are wonderful. Great package.
tired_man··on Japan's Anti-Crime Orange Balls
It's an interesting concept, but makes that assumption that first, all the clerks are capable of throwing a ball, and second, that they can actually hit something they throw at.

Without wanting to be sexist, many girls who haven't been involved in sports tend to throw a ball as if they have one foot stuck in a bucket and could only be certain of the ball eventually hitting the ground.

IMHO, a better system would have a fixed sprayer at the door activated by a two stage trigger that first requires the clerk to press switch and then sprays when the door is opened.

tired_man··on How did the MPAA/RIAA become so horrible in the first place?
MBAs, Lawyers, and plenty of money to buy lesgilation?
tired_man··on Why I’m dumping Google Chrome
Or they don't want to risk finding they've installed something with a wonderful new undisclosed Zero Day exploit throughout their shop.

Updating in a corporate environment is very different from what you do at home or a small business. Some sectors require extensive testing before rolling out any change whatsoever.

In that case, they don't want things happening before they have tested any proposed changes.

When a package is blown down to the network with it's configuration locked (and set to not update), they don't expect a package to spontaneously start updating itself.

Google might let their browser ignore "no auto updates," but may find their browser losing market share in the corporate world. If they get booted, chances are 50/50 if the app ever make it back in the mix.

It doesn't take much.

If I wanted a closed ecosystem, I'd have chosen Apple. Google is becoming less and less appealing with every new decision they announce.

US, UK, AU....

The only hope is for oil to just run out.

tired_man··on I read the 100 “best” fantasy or sci-fi novels--they were shockingly offensive
She's a very sad individual. I feel sorry for her more than any sort of ire.

She cherry-picked right past Cordelia Naismith (later Vorkosigan) and her mother, both from "Beta Colony" where genders swap like day and night ("Shards of Honor," Vorkosigan Saga, Book One). You won't find any simpering females in any of Lois McMaster Bujold's novels unless they are a plot device there to serve as a victim and you won't run into gender discrimination from any primary characters (except for the old people ;-)).

tired_man··on “Two days ago the police came to me and wanted me to stop working on this”
They want to remain in control and never be displaced.

You can tell when a country is either totalitarian or when it's heading that way when they begin seeking increased control over the media, when your communications are subject to routine governmental monitoring, when you can become criminally suspect for having cash, when they're afraid of you being able to encrypt anything because it might be Terror/ChildPorn (read as "forming plots against them"), etc.

Most of all, they don't want to end up dead like Saddam and Qaddafi.

They have valid fears of that becoming reality. Just like other politicians....

tired_man··on States Eye Taxes on Streaming Video and Cloud Computing
Go ahead a tax it. Who cares? All that does is cut the content producers out of any cash they may have earned from website ads where people access their streams.

Increasing its cost with a tax will drive people to access content based in other regions, from USENET, from filehosts, from torrents, etc....

The people who have these ideas are quite obviously still living in the era of paper and video tape, where the only content was provided by an original content producer.

tired_man··on When does intelligence become a curse?
well, shit. this explains a lot.
tired_man··on Ashely Madison Hackers
Everyone was better off trawling local places. At least then if your SO found out, it wasn't something that anyone with time a enough space and bandwidth could find out about, too.
tired_man··on Exploring the Wreck of USS Macon, the Navy's Last Flying Aircraft Carrier
Yeah, that was something. The USAF tried a 2-3 similar schemes.

Let me recommend the wiki for a starting point (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasite_aircraft) for more cool stuff. You're in for a treat :-)

I grew up on adventure pulp fiction and Saturday serials at the local theater. I love that sort of stuff!

tired_man··on Petition UK government to not ban encryption
I wouldn't be surprised.

Have you ever read about the various French Intel services after the revolution? Talk about convoluted. They trusted no one or even each other.

tired_man··on Editing humanity
Personally, I think aborting an embryo that will be born to live with serious defects or illnesses is the first answer, at least until embryonic genetic editing is viable in all cases.
tired_man··on Petition UK government to not ban encryption
Many countries still require warrants.
tired_man··on How Google Could Rig the 2016 Election
I think Google is very interested in who might win. If for no other reason that for future planning of products and services. Some candidates may be more favourable than others regarding certain issues.

Whether it's their influence or cash, either way would be buying the candidate. Providing under the table services for preferential treat by authorities is also well-engrained in most countries.

Sad, but factual.

tired_man··on 'Warrant canaries': a subtle hint that your email provider is compromised
So does that AussieNanny law apply only when the canary is present on a server actually based in Australia or having a .AU domain?

Seems like this is a great op for someone to setup a canary system in Belize or, even better, a canary system on a .onion domain. I would check there before visiting a sensitive site if there were such a system.

It's about time!

tired_man··on Petition UK government to not ban encryption
How does anyone think that a petition to a government will cause that body to change their direction on any topic other than meaningless feel good areas?

Serious policy isn't influenced by petitions. If you don't have a majority of legislators/MPs in your pocket, you're wasting both time and bandwidth.
