tired-turtle··on 'A full-blown crisis': Americans brace for a surge in healthcare costs
That’s how insurance works. You pay for a plan you likely don’t need so everyone older than you is reasonably covered.

If young people elected to get a barebones plan while in good health, who would subsidize them when they grow older?

tired-turtle··on After my dad died, we found the love letters
You don’t find love: you build it together.
tired-turtle··on The twin probes just launched toward Mars have an Easter egg on board
“Standards of clothing” is not a set with a total order, and society has never had one way to dress. You’re unfairly projecting your values (of a certain style of dress) onto society as if it’s shared by everyone.
tired-turtle··on Why today's humanoids won't learn dexterity
This is a good point, but I’m not convinced it negates the author’s argument.

Consider whether you could pick up that same fragile glass with your eyes closed? I’d wager you could, as you’d still receive (diminished) textile feedback despite the thick gloves.

tired-turtle··on Poorest US workers hit hardest by slowing wage growth
If a bill due at the end of the month is forgiven on the 25th, were expenses cut? What if the debt is forgiven on the 2nd of the next month?

I’d wager most people would consider those scenario cuts. However, in your framework, the verbiage is different despite a shared outcome.

tired-turtle··on More honey bees dying, even as antibiotic use halves
While this claim is plausible, it’s (admittedly pleasing) conjecture until you provide evidence.
tired-turtle··on Why I do programming
Or “X is being deprecated” instead of (the more appropriate) “X is being decommissioned”
tired-turtle··on OBBB signed: Reinstates immediate expensing for U.S.-based R&D
> Everywhere more renewables have gone electricity has become more expensive and less reliable, completely antithetical to strong industrial development.

Have you heard of Washington state? 75% renewable energy and 10th percentile for the cost per kWh.

tired-turtle··on Working on databases from prison
Distancing the victim from the outcome of sentencing is by design and, arguably, for the better in a democracy. Crimes violate the social order, not just the victim. It behooves us all to have a system wherein (in theory) the system, not the victim, applies a set of rules to determine punishment, as contrary as that might seem to one’s sense of self, morals, etc. It’s a part of why “justice is blind.”
tired-turtle··on Musk-Trump dispute includes threats to SpaceX contracts
This is a shameful false equivalency. In the puppet president scenario you outline, the blast radius is, at worst, 4 years? In the case of an insurrection to subvert the peaceful transfer of power, there is a generation or more of democratic order lost.
tired-turtle··on Musk-Trump dispute includes threats to SpaceX contracts

tired-turtle··on Dijkstra On the foolishness of "natural language programming"
> Modern programming already is very, very far from strict obedience and formal symbolism

Difficult to sort this out with what follows.

Consider group theory. A group G is a set S with an operator * that supports an identity, closure, and an inverse. With that abstraction comes a hefty amount of power. In some sense, a group is akin to a trait on some type, much like how a class in Java can implement or extend Collection. (Consider how a ring ‘extends’ a group.)

I’d posit frameworks and libraries are no different in terms of formal symbolism from the math structure laid out above. Maybe the interfaces are fuzzy and the documentation is shoddy, but there’s still a contract we use to reason about the tool at hand.

> I’m not manually managing memory, parsing HTTP requests byte-by-byte

If I don’t reprove Peano’s work, then I’m not really doing math?

tired-turtle··on Cities can cost effectively start their own utilities
That’s fine that you want to stay put, but GP is suggesting (I think) that others shouldn’t have to subsidize your choice to live in a rural area where power service is (currently) more expensive.
tired-turtle··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter. I know a little about H1B1 visas and the process of getting one, having worked with many colleagues who are in the US on one, but I don’t fully understand the pros/cons of the H1B1 program from the perspective of the average American.

As one presidential candidate will likely direct his ire at the program if he wins, can you explain why such a program is compelling or vital for our tech industry? My H1B1 colleagues seem happy to be in the US (and have indicated such) but nonetheless appear exploited. My naive economic analysis is that the visa program depresses wages to the benefit of corporations, but I’m sure the situation is far more nuanced.

(I’d like something to offer my conservative friends/family who increasingly think all immigration should be verboten.)

tired-turtle··on Life expectancy rise in rich countries slows down: took 30 years to prove
In this case, the “shorter frauds” involve dying near the reported date of death? By your definition, the postulated (unreported) deviation is statistically insignificant.
tired-turtle··on Commonly used arm positions can overestimate blood pressure readings: study
Blood pressure measurements at the doctor are the bane of my (medical) existence. Mix minor white coat syndrome with time blindness and you suddenly have high blood pressure because you barreled up the stairs to the second floor office moments before the nurse took a reading.

My doctor was initially befuddled because by all other metrics I am in good health, but it’s amazing how you can go from 90/55 at home to 140/75 at the office. We do the measurement at the end of the appointment now to varying success.

tired-turtle··on Should we decompose our monolith?
“Monolith or microservice?” is the maw so many teams cannot debate their way out of. I encourage my team to think in terms of domain (like DDD), similar to the author’s approach of demarcating by “business unit.”

If something is a coherent domain and can (mostly) stand alone, keep it all together in the same service; otherwise, make a new service for your new domain. The trick, of course, is knowing how broad a domain to cut out of your web of services and responsibilities.

tired-turtle··on In unprecedented move, Ohio is funding construction of private religious schools
For those who are more knowledgeable: is this bait for a conservative SCOTUS decision a few years down the road and/or do these legislators think state government should directly fund religious (educational) organizations?

If the latter, I doubt the legislators would support funding non-Christian schools, so it’s bald-faced hypocrisy at best? I’m having difficulty understanding how someone rationalizes appropriating government funds for religious institutions.

tired-turtle··on What are the best options for Amazon SDEs thinking about leaving over RTO policy
(from my peers) the MO for those who want to leave seems to be slacking until PIP/Focus/Pivot (for the payout) while looking for outside opportunities. There are a ton of companies out there that meet your criteria, but you’ll have to do some digging. YMMV
tired-turtle··on Tattoo ink sold on Amazon has high levels of weird and rare bacteria
I used to think this way, but I no longer feel the signal to noise ratio provides meaningful data, in particular because people do rash or unreasoned things and develop odd habits (that they later grow out of) in their 20s. That part of your adult life is about learning, after all. (I also don’t believe there isn’t anything intrinsically wrong with tattoos.)

Moreover, having a tattoo isn’t necessarily a measure of low impulse control. I have friends who have ruminated for years about a certain tattoo. Plus, imputing bad decision making to having a tattoo is more a (cultural) projection on your part than anything else.

tired-turtle··on How do we make remote meetings not suck? (2018)
I suspect to emphasize enumeration so readers don’t incorrectly parse the sentence. But the text would be even clearer had these speech patterns been omitted altogether.
tired-turtle··on Scientists re-emerge after a year in Mars simulation project
The settlers were ipso facto the hostile group, as they were settling another people’s land. Otherwise, we’d call them visitors.

(edit) My intention wasn’t political correctness but that words are important. “unwanted” is more fitting than “hostile,” as it matches the intention of the settlers.

tired-turtle··on Group of 17 London secondary schools join up to go smartphone-free
Can you provide data that grounds these claims? How often are children saved from abduction by an iPhone or similar?

The schools posit that the social and educational benefits of no smartphones outweigh the (purported) risks of an un-nannied childhood.

tired-turtle··on Polestar eliminates the rear window in latest electric car
Consider the case where you are driving slowly and you notice a car speeding at your rear with what appears to be no intention of stopping.

A mirror allows you to quickly judge the velocity of the other vehicle so you can consider moving out of its way to avoid a collision. There’s too much lag and uncertainty with a rear-view camera.

tired-turtle··on The most backdoor-looking bug I've ever seen (2021)
Our nascent AI overlord wants a word with you. The assumption that the attacker was a person was deemed culturally insensitive.
tired-turtle··on DNS over Wikipedia
It’s unclear how you meant this, but it reads as

> Sure, the Klan has some bad hombres, but we also run Checkers Tuesdays, maths tutoring for underprivileged youths Friday mornings, and Bible study Sundays.

That is, at some point, the bad overwhelms any good.

tired-turtle··on The Ute Tribe will construct one of the largest solar farms in the US
Within the context of the US, tribe can refer to a specific group of Native Americans. Group size is irrelevant, e.g. the Navajo Nation has the largest reservation and 165k members.

Each tribe is free to determine its own legal structure, as it is a separate polity (a sovereign nation) from the US -- sort of. US federal law still applies on federal reservations.

tired-turtle··on Oslo acquires ChatGPT for 110k students and teachers
fwiw the title is not a garden path sentence, as there’s no misleading initial parse.
tired-turtle··on On a Tesla: Don't
The article was published in “jammern” (see byline), so it seems fair game to use.

My brain reasoned it meant approx “cry/complain” as the article was registering a grievance:

> This jammern is thus about the car

tired-turtle··on Don't Shave That Yak (2005)
This is a great example of a garden path sentence. My mind tripped over “please do so” several times.
