Noob to rust, is there a reason to use if / if let over match statements or is it just a style preference?
tipsytoad··on “Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted and demonetized”
So hypothetically could 4chan-esk threads live on twitte but not be found unless someone searches for them? Perhaps through a hashtag?

Would love to locally host this, do you have a source?
tipsytoad··on Ask HN: Expected value of a $2 powerball ticket is now $4.10. Is it worth it?
I wrote an article on an alternative ev metric[1] which takes into account the player having a discrete bankroll (rather than infinite assumed by ev).

tipsytoad··on Ask HN: How to stand out while searching for an internship
I've just finished an internship this summer, I'd say the #1 thing that makes you stand out is some kind of personal project in something you're interested in -- beyond the usual tutorial crud app.

Every company I interviewed with said it was the thing that stood out the most about my CV, and it gives you an interesting subject to talk about in interviews.

I think it's more to be used in the home with other vr users online, the pro is supposed to introduce features such as eye, mouth and emotion tracking to make avatars more "real"
tipsytoad··on Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel Watch
Yeah true, and I'm sure a Samsung would have suited me better, but I bought a pixel because of what I thought would be decent android support.

Up to this point I've only ever purchased android, but usually after ~2 years they stop receiving updates and go downhill pretty quick after that. The fact that the iPhone 8 is still supported on ios16 is crazy to me, that was released the same time as my old one plus 5t, which I loved but just slowed to a brick in 2021. That's why I'd go iPhone

Well I don't think it's just limited to playing games, the Quest Pro night introduce something like this for example: https://uploadvr.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Quest-Pro-im...
tipsytoad··on Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Google Pixel Watch
I've got a pixel 6 currently, and I'm put off ever buying android again. The underscreen fingerprint hasn't worked for 6 months since a software update, Bluetooth just stopped working one morning forcing me to factory reset, the giro frequently (and randomly) flips north and south, meaning I've caught the bus the wrong way many a time relying on Google maps.

I guess that's just my buyers beware, yymv :)

I thought the idea of future vr is mixed reality, so you could be "present" while experiencing an AR like experience
tipsytoad··on “58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere” mkws theme
Anyone got recommendations for a "minimal" CSS template?
tipsytoad··on Ask HN: How influential can physical appearance be in professional environments?
I'm sure it has a role, alongside other features such as charisma and confidence.

Of course the effect is subjective and varied, but oftentimes I've found that people that claim a decision being down to appearance to be those that blame their computer when their code doesn't run :)

tipsytoad··on What VS Code theme do you use?
Default dark GitHub theme. Maybe you've seen it before :)

Looks great! I was thinking of a rusty pet project for the same thing :)

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but Ranger is a great alternative tool, it can even be integrated into vim

tipsytoad··on Woman ‘dehumanised’ by viral TikTok filmed without her consent
No. A sponsorship would give a clear budget, if blizzard gives him 500k for video expenses the rest would go back to blizzard, not him.

Blizzard would probably require him to spend all the money though, as more money = more clicks.

tipsytoad··on Nothing Phone (1)
Nitpicking but why are their images so pixelated?

To me the nothing airpods looked sexy those LEDs on the back this look like a gimmick

tipsytoad··on A phone app called Lumenate claims to alter the brain’s rhythms (2021)
I've had my fair share of psychedelics so I was pretty skeptical going into this, but it actually worked pretty well although I would call it a more like a trance than a trip.

It can't alter mental state anywhere nearly the same way as acid though - really the most significant part not just flashy light patterns. Still very cool can't wait to try next trip :)

tipsytoad··on How to make decisions like a poker player
I actually wrote a post about this, using a metric for expected outcomes instead of ev probability

tipsytoad··on Schools should be using open source software
I think the funniest thing about the post and the whole thread is how little (unfortunately) the rest of the world care about open source. And why should they? It's a true non-issue for them.

If I were school governor I'd be running everything on Chromebooks by now. Free storage, sync and applications.

tipsytoad··on Schools should be using open source software
Is this really an issue? It can easily be imported as a Google Doc which is totally free.
tipsytoad··on Memorizing Transformers
Could there be any merit training this on a common-sense dataset such as Cyc?

tipsytoad··on A CEO's Guide to Emacs (2015)
I'm on the other end of this. Recently moved to VSCode from Doom (before that neovim), it was just so slow for me. With default settings, switching between projects can take up to 10 seconds, which is instantaneous on VS, and can get actual latency between keypresses. I just didn't know what i was missing.

Anyone who hasn't looked at VS in a while I'd highly recommend it, just spending some time removing the bloat can make for a real clean experience.

tipsytoad··on Why Nerds Are Unpopular (2003)
Ok as someone who enjoys doing 'nerdy' things but would count myself as 'popular' etc this article is deluded on the ways popularity and school operate. Noone cares if you enjoy programming or computers as long as you act relatively 'normal'. It's not that nerds care about intelligence more than popularity (trust me most aren't) it's just that the nerds have already lost the popularity race by being socially awkward individuals that can't hold a conversation about any topics other than very specific subjects to save their life.

I've found nerds as a teenager to be one of the most judging, toxic group of people who actually care far more about popularity than anyone else at school. (How many other groups made lists of tables by popularity?)
