tinyspacewizard··on The Californian Ideology (1995)
Feels like the California Ideology has moved to slightly cheaper locales... Colorado, Austin Texas, etc. Perhaps a Covid effect?

If you're a benevolent dictator then it's easy and obvious. But there are powerful vested interests and elections to win.
tinyspacewizard··on Austral: A systems language with linear types and capabilities
No names, just function piping.
tinyspacewizard··on Austral: A systems language with linear types and capabilities
I have some questions; hope the OP is still around!

Will there be partial application?

    let appendHelloFile = appendFile("Hello");

    let f = openFile("log.txt");

    let f2 = appendHelloFile(f);

    closeFile(f2);
I suppose this might complicate the linear type system?

Will there be a pipeline operator? I think this fits really nicely with linear types:

    openFile("log.txt")
    |> appendFile("Hello")
    |> closeFile
This may be at odds with the no operator precedence rule.

You say that async will not be baked into the langauge. I think this is the right decision. However, will there be a syntatic sugar that can be used to avoid the "pyramid of doom" when writing promise-orientated code? It is possible to make this general purpose if done right.

tinyspacewizard··on People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities–Until They Live in One
How it works in Amsterdam, for example, is that you can still drive most places, however:

1. The motor vehicle route is extremely indirect, so walking is typically quicker

2. There is no free parking

3. Store loading happens only at certain times

4. There are shortcuts that emergency services can unlock with special keys

> I never understood why does the bicycle crowd feel the need to push everyone else to ride bicycles?

Driving a car in a urban area is great for the driver but pretty terrible for everyone else:

- Congestion

- Air pollution

- Noise pollution

- Space taken up by parking

- Danger of being run over

It doesn't really matter if you walk, cycle or get public transport. These have much lower externalities.

> I personally do not feel safe on a bike in a crowded city. Even if you took cars out of the equation

This is a shame because the cars (and other motor traffic) are in fact the main danger. Retirees and children cycle everywhere in NL because it feels safe enough for them to do so.

tinyspacewizard··on Are Progressives in Denial About Progress? Yes, but So Is Almost Everyone Else
I laughed, but also The World Bank
tinyspacewizard··on Are Progressives in Denial About Progress? Yes, but So Is Almost Everyone Else
It's debatable, of course. Some points I would add:

- Prices of healthcare, education and housing have increased in real terms

- Double income trap

- Shift from well paying union jobs to gig economy, temp agencies, Amazon warehouse etc. leading to precarious employment

- Opiod crisis

tinyspacewizard··on Are Progressives in Denial About Progress? Yes, but So Is Almost Everyone Else
It's a bit more nuanced than that. The standard of living for the bottom half globally has substantially improved over the past 100 years. The standard of living for the bottom half of the developed world has arguably declined in the past few decades. In the last 5 years or so, due to inflation and Covid, more people have fallen into extreme poverty.
tinyspacewizard··on WebAssembly: Docker Without Containers
> you could compile to an architecture and syscall interface that is platform agnostic

The issue is that I cannot easily compile.

tinyspacewizard··on WebAssembly: Docker Without Containers
This totally missed the point. I use Docker where the compilation story (and cross-compilation story) is a mess (looking at you, Python) and I don't have the resources to figure it all out. With Docker, I can get a portable image working in a few hours. It's a hack, but it's a convenient one. WASM does not offer this.

I've seen libraries that add a size_t type as an alias to int on certain systems. Rust gets it right here.
tinyspacewizard··on The type system is a programmer's best friend
If you are happy to use "obj", "System.Object", "Any" etc. in any place where the type-system breaks down then the downsides are very few.
tinyspacewizard··on Multiple assertions are fine in a unit test
Still a bit flaky. In an OOP language mocking is appropriate or in an FP language defunctionalization.

Netflix keep making content. How long until they have so much that we are content just to explore the back catalogue? Can margins increase massively over the long run?
