Mosquitoes are actually an important pollinators for many species. Mosquitoes aren't parasites they need blood only during their reproduction cycle

Yes,These days most people think that GOOGLE=INTERNET and look on GOOGLE for the nearest hotel or ask GOOGLE today's weather. Google has basically become so big that for most people Google is the manifestation of the internet.

This reliance on web search as a gateway to the internet also started with google as in the days of IE we had separate URL bars and search bars, toolbars and bookmark tabs were the norm and there were many different ways people used to obtain their news, talk to friends and in general consume content on the internet.

But Google basically turned the browser into a funnel that sends all internet users to https://google.com and as chrome has most market-share in both desktop and mobile(thanks to android). Most browsers adopted the SEARCH-ENGINE route in their browsers leading to the position we are in.

Today the average person visits a website only in two ways

1.Auto-fill on their URL...sorry search bar 2.Type the name of the website on the google search engine.

I have no clue why the feds don't care about big tech monopolies the way Microsoft was attacked back then for IE which is basically child's play compared to what companies(even Microsoft with Edge) are doing today.

Your reply made me read DDG privacy policy.

> > Similarly, we may add an affiliate code to some eCommerce sites (e.g. Amazon & eBay) that results in small commissions being paid back to DuckDuckGo when you make purchases at those sites.

Why was there a big backlash against brave for doing this but no one bats an eye when DDG does it?

How is this different from SearX(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Searx) Wont just hosting your own searX instance be an easier thing to do? Curious. :)

DDG is completely dependent on Microsoft for both the search results and their ad revenue. This causes a lot of problems as whenever Microsoft stops supporting DDG,the company is basically dead. In my opinion I think this is why DDG is taking a lot of "missteps" as they don't want to sour their ties with Microsoft. This is just my theory.

Google is running behind NLP(Natural Language Processing) causing problems like this. I feel we should learn to use search engines and not search-engines trying to guess what we want to find using some weird Black Box AI

Inspired by this I have started making a list of alternative search engines and plan to review them once count reaches 100. https://github.com/Tintedfireglass/search-engines
tintedfireglass··on Ask HN: How to block all political content from showing up online?
> i would like to go even wider and just block all news sites as they tend to push political agendas from their prospective which mostly is filled with speculation that often causes unnecessary stress

i would like to go even wider and just block all news sites

Fixed it

tintedfireglass··on Ask HN: How to block all political content from showing up online?
Which 50% to block is the problem. Which one is politics which one is not is controversial. Is politics related only to what government is doing? Then what about religion? Is that not political? If all that is political is VIM vs EMACS or WINDOWS vs MACOS also considered political in IT circles? Its almost impossible to decide where a line can be drawn, but even if you want to draw a custom jagged line for yourself then its going to take you years to do so and even then it wont be perfect as human mindsets keep changing and what was apolitical a few years ago can suddenly become a very POLARIZING topic(eg.Vaccines).
tintedfireglass··on Ask HN: How do you monitor your young kids' computer usage?
Honestly I feel that kids will learn on their own and we should allow them to explore, unless you mean kids below 10 and in that case just block the internet and let them use computers offline

Edit: when I say learn on their own I mean we have to teach them to use the internet responsibly and instead of sneaking on web traffic or blocking particular sites we need to educate them about it. Communication is always the best solution to most problems

tintedfireglass··on Why does science news suck so much?
People shouldn't believe in science, they need to believe in the scientific method... That is the peopblem with schools as they teach facts and not the methodology

tintedfireglass··on Plasma 5.25
Yes it's really heavy on my old machine but everyone points me to the benchmark numbers which gets me annoyed.
tintedfireglass··on Plasma 5.25
No way, From my personal experience on my machine with 6gb ddr3, 5400rpm disk, i5 3rd gen KDE is so annoying to use and even multitasking is laggy while on xfce it's very smooth relatively. This was observed on Ubuntu, Arch and opensuse. Opensuse KDE was the worst of them all while arch with Xfce ran the fastest of them all.

or you can just use session
tintedfireglass··on Telegram reportedly surrendered user data to authorities
If you want signal without using a phone number, you can use a fork of signal called Session(https://getsession.org/). That's the power of opensource :)

I feel that the average person would be inclined to use signal more if it required a phone number than otherwise.

tintedfireglass··on Framework laptop water damage repair attempt using partial schematic [video]
Why do you need original parts when there are millions of options. If there is no Lenovo RAM I'd buy crucial ram or Samsung ram. If there's no ssd I'd buy an Intel ssd or whatever else. For a display replacement of course you won't be able to do it on your own and anyways it's not a phone and displays rarely break in laptops so Lenovo center will do it for you if you can't find any displays.
tintedfireglass··on Framework laptop water damage repair attempt using partial schematic [video]
Exactly I don't understand a fuss about it. If someone wants an open source laptop companies like system 76 exist. I don't understand what part of the market is being targeted by framework and even then there are better alternatives for framework if you want to replace the ram ssd battery etc.
tintedfireglass··on Framework laptop water damage repair attempt using partial schematic [video]
Aren't all laptops that aren't macs easily repairable?

RAM, SSD, battery, keyboard(but in many laptops the whole top panel has to be replaced), track pad, wifi card, display(framework has the better way only over here).

I mean buying a tongfang OR a system 76 is a way better option than going for framework due to its QR codes I don't understand why.

I'm not shitting on framework this is just what I've been wanting to ask for so long
