tinsmith··on How we fixed the ozone layer (2021)
Even if we abandon the word "hypocrisy" for the sake of this discussion, being unable to care about an issue unless it directly effects you is just as bad, if not worse in some ways.
tinsmith··on How to stay informed without getting paralyzed by bad news
Easy. Just make HN your primary news source. Boom. Mental health saved.
tinsmith··on Voyager 1 is sending back data from interstellar space that's mystifying NASA
Ahh, yes. V'ger. Who wants to place bets on when its consciousness awakens?
tinsmith··on Nearly 20% of active Twitter accounts likely to be fake or spam
I remember when I found out I was a bot. It was during a harrowing judgement conflict with an image-based captcha about traffic lights, and caused a complete shutdown of my higher order processes. To this day, I still don't know the threshold of how much traffic light actually needs to be in a square to be considered for selection, so I just stopped logging in to everything.
tinsmith··on Tilde.town is a computer meant for sharing
SDF is tons of fun, and good people. I wish I had more time to experiment with the systems and build my own space there, but anyone interested in preservation of the Old Ways of the Internet should certainly spin up a free account and see what's what.
tinsmith··on Michigan is devoting a 40-mile stretch of highway to testing self-driving cars
As a resident, I have to point out that it would be best if we first fixed our crumbling roads before we go devoting any of them to anything.
tinsmith··on More than 100 people who attended a New Jersey high school now have brain cancer
My tin hat is twitching. I live in another state near an Air Force Base. My father was killed by a glioblastoma 3 years ago. My boss was diagnosed with one 3 months after my father died. A friend was diagnosed with one a year after that. Next thing I know, I'm catching wind of stories from nurses and aides about the odd uptick of these things over the last decade. I chalk it up to better detection methods, etc, but there exists a nagging tickle at the back of my mind that someone wittingly or unwittingly made a decision in our area that is resulting in an unforeseen risk of brain tumors.

We have to be careful in this territory, though. It is also possible we are trying to explain shadows that were always there.

I do hope the folks in that area get some real answers, though.

tinsmith··on ‘I'm His Pig’: Dril Responds to Elon Musk Buying Twitter
The real irony is that you are not really familiar with @Dril, and the dry sarcasm went a-wooshin' past you, but you still had you run your mouth about something you thought you had a handle on.
tinsmith··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
I get why it exists, but we also have to be honest with ourselves and admit that there is a massive problem in communicating without assumption of prior knowledge/experience. The tech world is particularly guilty of this, with veterans having forgotten that there was a time when they didn't know what they know, and lacking any patience to adequately help those seeking understanding. To add to the issue, the Internet proper is so noisy with partial or broken information that the task of finding the correct information is far more daunting than it was 20 years ago when I started learning.

We need to give newcomers a break and answer their questions well, and discuss to promote understanding, instead of swatting at them with our canes. The only way knowledge passes to the next generation of thinkers and tinkers is if we fuel that curiousity.

tinsmith··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
"If you have to ask, you shouldn't be doing it," said the tired old King of Gatekeeping.

For a second, I thought I was on Stackoverflow. If you aren't starting by asking questions about the possibilities or limitations of a system you're about to work in, then you aren't starting properly.

tinsmith··on How to Quiet Your Mind Chatter (2021)
Give or take a few years. There are a number of subtle developmental differences between individuals. Not saying the doc is correct on diagnosing a 4 year old with ADHD, as some docs still like to jump the gun on that. However, so long as the diagnosis results in evidence-based treatments that do not involve drugs, it may still be beneficial. I say this as a 44 year old who was not diagnosed until 41, and that was after almost 10 years of trying to explain to docs what was happening to me, and the hell that it made my life. From my perspective, it becomes a question of which is worse; diagnosing and treating too early (sans drugs) or trying to fix a broken adult set in their ways?
tinsmith··on Are sprouted potatoes safe?
I think the word you are looking for is "tuber," but if there is a botanist in the house, hopefully they can clear it up. Now I'm curious.
