timvisee··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
There does seem to be some internal limit to the history size though. My installation is also more than 5 years old, but I can't browse back more than ~6 months.

This helps with performance for sure.

timvisee··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
Yes!

And useful stuff like `*` in the address bar to search just bookmarks.

timvisee··on The problem with Go’s default HTTP handlers
With Rust you could write a function that consumes the HTTP client, not allowing you use it after, resulting in a compiler error for your example.

In Go you could write a function taking the HTTP client reference and setting it to null. This would at least produce a runtime error if it ever comes across the path rather than doing something else that is unexpected.

timvisee··on Tell HN: LinkedIn is automatically importing job postings into company profiles
I have 'Hibernated' my profile a month ago. I've never felt better. I recommend others to do the same.

It won't permanently throw away your data, allowing you to revert if you so desire.

timvisee··on A Journey into the Linux Scheduler
Great read! Thanks for all the links to Linux kernel source. That's super interesting to see.
timvisee··on Add-on support in new Firefox for Android (2021)
I've been using Firefox on Android with a set of custom extensions for a while now, and it is fanatic!

No more ads, no more cookie banners.

timvisee··on Explaining Code Using ASCII Art
I put some basic ASCII art explaining concepts in my article here[1], some might like to check it out:

timvisee··on ffsend: A fully featured Firefox Send command line client
I'm have been hosting Send for a long while at send.vis.ee. You might find it useful!
timvisee··on ffsend: A fully featured Firefox Send command line client
Dev here. I'd be happy to answer any questions!
timvisee··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
WTF LinkedIn? I need a ton more clicks to disable all their bullshit notifications on there, and it's even paged!
timvisee··on Stolperstein
Great to see recognition for this on HN! My mother set up a group buy here in the neighborhood to place four of these Stolpersteine, and arranged everything needed to make it happen.
timvisee··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
I use it for personal, company and other sessions in the same window, to authenticate with different credentials on the same sites. It's fantastic!
timvisee··on New(ish) command line tools
Some might find `ffsend` useful to securely share files from your command line:

timvisee··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
Isn't $5 per month per user (enterprise) quite expensive for a glorified key-value store?
timvisee··on Show HN: Bang Bookmarks – replicate DuckDuckGo bangs in Firefox using Keymarks
Along with that, they're a bit smarter. If you set a search period (last week), the !g bang will pass it along to Google.

Also, you can use just a `!` for Im Feeling Ducky, to visit the first result.

timvisee··on Why is my Rust build so slow?
Unless you pull in a humongous amount of dependencies, Rust's compilation is still very very fast.

The dependency problem is a whole different issue. Hard to tackle, but it's one that must be solved.

timvisee··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
Shit. I'm sure my account is removed too. Had quite a few games.

Is there something I can do about this? This is unclear to me.

timvisee··on Ask HN: What are the single person activities in Christmas and/or New Year?
Awesome! You mean, you stream your programming. I've been wondering for years whether I should give it a try. Is it also helpful, or just fun to kill time?
timvisee··on Passage: A fork of password-store that uses age instead of GnuPG
I'm in the process of implementing it in prs as well.

timvisee··on Advent of Code 2021
Last year I solved all puzzles in less than 1 second. This year, for lack of a better goal, I'll be trying to do the same: https://github.com/timvisee/advent-of-code-2021
timvisee··on The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader
What I love about these things, is that you can SSH into it. There are various mods for it. And you can run your own software on it.
timvisee··on Advent of Code 2021
Thanks for linking! I plan to do something like this again this year :)
timvisee··on What does microblogging give you that forums didn't?
I hate microblogging with a passion. I find those threads extremely annoying/cumbersome/unusable to read, because it always has a lot of noise around it. Especially on Twitter.
timvisee··on Show HN: lazymc – Put your Minecraft server to rest when idle
Cool! Thanks for sharing.
timvisee··on Show HN: lazymc – Put your Minecraft server to rest when idle
Yes!

Should work with anything that uses the standard Minecraft protocol to connect to the game.

timvisee··on My WhatsApp Security code changed, with no login or logout
These 'Security codes' are problematic. WhatsApp servers can force regeneration, allowing to set up a MitM. Users may compare their codes to confirm their channel is secure, but nobody does that.
timvisee··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Thanks for your response! Hope you can implement this as well without too much trouble.

I wonder if you could just assume UTF-8 to be the default these days. I imagine that to fix many other cases as well.

timvisee··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Cool!

There do seem to be some text encoding issues though. For example: https://search.marginalia.nu/search?query=tim+visee

timvisee··on OpenAI Shuts Down Chatbot Project by Indie Developer
It isn't so "Open" after all. What a shame.
timvisee··on PipeWire: A server for Linux audio and video streams
Yes! I experienced the same. Just never publicly complained about it. It's the only constant running thing having high CPU. PipeWire, though still somewhat power hungry, is a lot better.
