tims33··on SpaceX's Starlink inks first in-flight WiFi deal
Great news! Would love to have high bandwidth in-flight connectivity where a Google Doc can actually load.
tims33··on EU-US privacy shield 2.0 is again a political show
Why not have this link to the Schrems article[0] rather than this advertisement for the Simple Analytics product?

tims33··on Google to Acquire Mandiant
A typical consulting acquisition for someone like Accenture could be $250-500k per head. I realize this firm is deeply specialized and at the top of their industry, but it is a massive premium.
tims33··on Google Cloud to acquire Mandiant for $5.4B
With 600 consultants that is $9M per consultant. I realize they analysts and other staff, but compared to other consulting acquisitions which are often <$500k per consultant. Consultants are notoriously difficult to retain and often clash with new cultures. This time is obviously incredibly specialized which makes them different and I'm sure Google made sure there are strong retention bonuses, but it is a pretty incredible price.
tims33··on IRS to ditch biometric requirement for online access
IRS press release: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-transition-away-f...

Great news for everyone here. I still don't know how this provider was actually selected, but at least this change came relatively quickly.

tims33··on Time to Upgrade your Monitor (high-refresh 4K on Mac)
Great article. Some of the Mac UI has changed in the last two years since this was written, but I at least figured out my main monitor had switched to 30 Hz for some reason and I have a better optimized scale now. Much easier on the eyes.
tims33··on Chrome is changing its logo for the first time in eight years
It has been a long and arduous journey to flat. Glad they stuck it out.
tims33··on New research: natural gas appliances emit much more methane than realized
It is kind of amazing how often the "next big thing" turns out to be less than promised. Natural Gas was supposed to be this great transition away from coal and heating oil and it seems like it has nearly as many issues.
tims33··on Apple reveals road map to tax any business with an app at 27%
He's not wrong about some of this, but DHH has lost so much credibility that he's not a particularly desirable public face of this fight.
tims33··on Treasury reconsiders IRS’s use of ID.me face recognition for web
Totally agree. Makes me wonder what sort of back room dealing went on to select ID.me.
tims33··on United flies passenger flight on sustainable aviation fuel supplying one engine
One interesting aspect buried deeper in the release is that United has gone out to make extensive financial commitments to get this fuel produced at greater scale. Putting these fuels to use is more than just testing.
tims33··on I read the federal government’s Zero-Trust Memo so you don’t have to
Really pleasantly surprised at how progressive this memo is. It will be interesting to see the timelines put in place to make the transition.

Btw - I'd love to see the people who put this memo together re-evaluate the ID.me system they're implementing for citizens given how poor the identity verification is.

tims33··on Alder Lake Core i9 processor is faster than the M1 Max
Hopefully this turns into a situation where consumers and technologists are the winners. Pat Gelsinger was pretty clear on how he felt about the situation with Apple when he joined Intel and it seems clear we'll see Intel continue to improve. Ultimately this competition should product better products and better prices.
tims33··on Quebec bans unvaccinated from buying groceries at Walmart, Costco
I agree. Hospital capacity is critical. One of the biggest mistakes of the pandemic is leaders not being clear on exactly what problem they're trying to solve and laying out how a manageable list of mitigations address the specific problems.
tims33··on Quebec bans unvaccinated from buying groceries at Walmart, Costco
Creating a competitive advantage for non-big box stores? This is an incredibly odd policy.
tims33··on The impact of hardware specifications on reaching quantum advantage
The Office Space approach
tims33··on In ‘learning trap’ experiment, adults leap to conclusions while children explore
Complex proof of Zen Buddhism's Beginners Mind concept.
tims33··on Apple, its control over the iPhone, and the internet
I'm aligned that developers are the ones who pay the price. Apple gets consumers on their side and can turn that into leverage against developers. This is where regulation and litigation are going to be key going forward.

I don't completely agree on innovation. While they are limiting, developers can always launch on Android which has a massive, if less affluent, marketshare and leverage that against Apple's ecosystem. Clearly it isn't a perfect solve. I'm still happier to not have my kids downloading bloatware, spyware, and battery killers on their Apple devices.

tims33··on Apple, its control over the iPhone, and the internet
Apple has already made it clear that there is only one user base they are interested in supporting. They've made a huge business out of supporting only the Apple way. It can certainly be frustrating in some cases, but that is the choice you make joining their ecosystem.
tims33··on Apple, its control over the iPhone, and the internet
Just join the Android ecosystem then. Everyone has a choice. There is nothing ghastly.
tims33··on Apple, its control over the iPhone, and the internet
I love the App Store on the iPhone. I realize it comes with Apple's oversight and values, but I generally feel pretty safe with what I get there. I don't feel the same way about Google Play Store. Maybe my views are irrational, but my experience has been incredibly positive.
tims33··on Microsoft Loop brings back Google Wave?
Collaboration technology startups are a ton of fun, but the problem is that eventually Microsoft always shows up to rain on your parade.

Notion, Airtable, and Coda always knew they'd have to deal with this at some point.

tims33··on Microsoft Loop brings back Google Wave?
Which was built to combat Lotus Notes
tims33··on Chilling Effects
Certainly an interesting read.

Although, it really makes me think of the words of the Big Lebowski: "That's just like, your opinion, man" which I think aligns with his ultimate conclusion.

tims33··on Tech salaries fall in Bay Area, New York City, rise in Austin, San Diego
Is -.3% over one year considered statistically significant to draw the conclusion that salaries are falling?
tims33··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
It doesn't come off as simply pointing out. How does he know it's obviously dishonest? The author likely felt otherwise. It just comes off as an entitlement that wasn't necessary.
tims33··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
I think it is great the company went the direction they did and I'm glad Brian is happy with it.

The commentary that I find frustrating is about the "retaliatory and intellectually dishonest hit pieces." The press does suck in many ways, but when you're own a massive chunk of a $65B company you should expect some negative press and be prepared. It makes him sound like he isn't open to dissent which is an incredibly privileged stance.

tims33··on California is shutting down its last nuclear plant
I get those points, but Fukushima was 10 years ago so clearly it couldn't have been that urgent. Really this has been about reducing carbon emissions. It is clear now that the full impact of natural gas is much larger than originally understood.
tims33··on California is shutting down its last nuclear plant
Such a frustrating decision. Whether you like nuclear or not and no matter how bullish you are on renewables, I don't understand why they wouldn't wait until they'd shut down every other carbon emitting form of power generation. This plant is so reliable as a baseline power generator.
tims33··on Self directed IRAs under attack in proposed tax bill
Assume this is meant to capture the Mitt Romney scenario.
