timjulien··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2022)
Radar Labs | Software Engineers & Technical PMs (infra, platform, data, full-stack, mobile) | Remote US / New York City | Full Time https://radar.com Radar Labs is a location infrastructure SaaS platform.

Over the past year Radar has been used from 100M+ devices doing 10,000 qps.

We've recently raised our Series C and are a small, but mighty engineering team (11 engineers!). We're based across the US, with an HQ in NYC in Union Square.

There's a ton of opportunity to make an impact and work on a variety of things, as we're a pretty fluid team:

- Infrastructure (e.g. Evaluate our production workloads on ARM64 and build out our AWS stack with Terraform CDK)

- Platform (e.g. Build out abstractions for our product engineers to ingest and compute geo queries at high-scale)

- Data (e.g. Process, deduplicate, and evaluate 10s of millions of POIs from a variety of vendors and open data)

- Mobile (e.g. building a control system that automatically configures optimizing battery-life and location accuracy for different use-cases over time)

- Product (e.g. build tools to visualize and debug location data at scale)

timjulien··on S2: Computational geometry and spatial indexing on the sphere
We use S2 extensively in our infrastructure, and open-sourced our Node.js TypeScript bindings for Google's reference C++ lib: https://github.com/radarlabs/s2. (More context about how and why here: https://radar.com/blog/open-source-node-js-typescript-s2-lib...)
timjulien··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2019)
Radar | Senior Server Engineer, Lead iOS Engineer | New York, NY | ONSITE | FULL-TIME | https://radar.io/

Radar (https://radar.io) is the location context platform. We help companies build better products and make better decisions with location context.

Radar is defining a new category of app platform. If Stripe is for payments and Twilio is for communications, Radar is for location.

Radar processes 100B+ locations per year from 50M+ devices worldwide. In April 2018, TechCrunch named us a top 12 up-and-coming enterprise startup in NYC (https://techcrunch.com/gallery/up-and-coming-enterprise-star...).

We're based in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York City.

timjulien··on October Brings Node.js 10.x to LTS and Node.js 11 to Current

timjulien··on AWS EC2 T2 Instances Demystified: Don’t Learn the Hard Way
As I myself learned the hard way, T2 are awful for production websites with sustained high traffic. The author points out the biggest issue:

“About 40 minutes into Hour 6 your instance no longer has any credits remaining. At this point, you’re now limited to the baseline performance of the instance, in this case, 10% of the vCPU.

At this point your application grinds to a halt.”

Agreed. As terrible as that is, it’s actually worse than that in my experience, bc even while you have positive CPU credits, you can’t spend them down smoothly to achieve high sustained CPU - the scheduler gives you something more like a sine wave of performance. Which is mystifying to say the least and leads me to my final point about why T2 is so awful: it violates the principle of least astonishment. Why would anyone expect that a CPU is limited to a small fraction of its output? T2 should not be categorized in the “general computing” aws instance family. It should be in a family all its own called “burstable” that explains the major difference between it and the general computing family.

timjulien··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
About the same number of people as at music hack day, I guess
timjulien··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
Send a message to my github account when we do the next foursquare hackathon and I'll do my best to get you in (https://github.com/tjulien). We maxed out the number of attendees based on how many people the space could hold. There was no criteria of having used our api before.
timjulien··on Htty is a console application for interacting with HTTP servers.
definitely a cool project. Cool to experiment with UX on top of http. I guess the thing that rubbed me the wrong way initially is I really like seeing request / response. As a developer I learn alot from watching those; and anytime I have bugs in my http it's typically a header problem, so I like seeing those front and center.
timjulien··on Htty is a console application for interacting with HTTP servers.
um yeah - what's wrong with plan ole http? curl has never come up short.
timjulien··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
New York, NY

LimeWire is hiring Python, Scala, Java, and Javascript developers to help build its next generation music service.

I am the tech lead of the REST APIs component, which is written in Scala. We are using a Service Oriented Architecture with back end services written in Python and Java, all communicating via Thrift. RabbitMQ, MySQL, Memcached, Solr, Riak and cloud deployment round out our back end stack. Front end is HTML5/CSS3. We use Git.

With 5 weeks paid time off + 10 holidays, free lunch every day, made-to-order breakfast twice a week, and rooftop parties, it's easy to get used to working here.
