timerol··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
Imports do not subtract from GDP. Reasoning about the economy from an accounting identity does not lead to useful knowledge. Historically times of increasing imports are also times of increasing GDP. https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/imports-do-not-subtract-from-g...

A reasonable question here is "did companies spend down petty cash to import goods in Q1" (no change to GDP), or "did companies stop investing and producing domestically in order to afford to import more goods in Q1" (reduced GDP).

timerol··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
Good news! The average worker has gone from spending about 25% of their paycheck on food in 1930[1] to about 11% today[2]. This is during a time period where the average worker has decreased their total hours[3]. This is confounded by more people entering the workforce, but the earliest data I can find suggests that we've gone from 58% of the population in the workforce in 1950 to 63% today[4].

(Note that "Food" is "food as a percentage of income", and "eating out" is "eating out as a percentage of food" which makes the chart look weird. This means that the 11% number below includes the cost of the private taxi for your burrito.)

timerol··on The Gruen Transfer is consuming the internet
The original article does not make this clear, but the concept of a Gruen transfer is distinct from the idea of consciously including them to maximize impulse shopping and retention. Faced with a sea of links to interesting content, I often undergo a Gruen transfer. Is that the intent of TVTropes, or simply emergent?
timerol··on Pixel is a unit of length and area
This example illustrates potential confusion around non-square pixels. 5 football fields long makes perfect sense, but I'm not sure if 2 football fields wide means "twice the width of a football field" or "width equaling twice the length of a football field". I would lean towards the latter in colloquial usage, which means that the area is definitely not the same as the area of 10 football fields
timerol··on A surprising enum size optimization in the Rust compiler
> Outside of dataless enums, this is the only datatype with this behaviour.

Note that there are non-zero integer types that can also be used in this way, like NonZeroU8 https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/num/type.NonZeroU8.html. The NULL pointer is also used as a niche, and you can create your own as well, as documented in https://www.0xatticus.com/posts/understanding_rust_niche/

timerol··on Flying Somewhere? You May Need That Real ID.
The combination of lockable bulletproof cockpit doors, and everyone realizing that a hostage situation on a plane means that everyone dies, helped make sure that 9/11 would not be repeated. The rest of it is security theater.
timerol··on Charging electric vehicles 5x faster in subfreezing temps
The state of the art (not just for BYD) is to make sure you don't have to charge a cold battery by getting it to the right temperature before charging. One of the reasons that Tesla (and others) has navigation integrated into trip planning integrated into the vehicle is so that the battery temperature can be optimized in the 10 minutes before you start charging, to maximize charging speed.

BYD would not pump 400 kW into a battery at -10 C. This research helps in the situation where you have a cold battery, and need to start charging it before it can warm up.

timerol··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
Is Britain really in such bad shape that the main way to conceptualize their problems are to say "look at America"? I know the memes about Civ-style America's Total Cultural Victory, but I'm kind of surprised to see it in the wild like this.
timerol··on AI/Math Puzzle
I solved this in the worst way. Took a (correct) guess at what was meant by prefix, and then brute-forced a dozen of them. Did you know that zetta.ai is also an AI company?
timerol··on How Silica Gel Took Over the World
At what ambient humidity do you do this? Where I am we are having a dry day at 45% humidity today. Tomorrow it'll be over 90%, and it'll stay between 50% and 90% through the weekend. I would expect that you need a more consistently dry environment for this to work

As an approximation, 10^0.5 = pi = 3, so $30k was what my mind immediately jumped to
timerol··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
I could not disagree more strongly. I would be appalled at using an app for something better accomplished by a flyer or drinking coffee in front of my house. People live in physical space. "How do I talk to my next-door neighbor?" is not a problem that the internet should be helping with
timerol··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
There is no way we would consider a manned flight to Mars outside of the "once per two years" launch window. Anyone following potential manned flights to Mars counts the windows. See https://www.reddit.com/r/SpaceXLounge/comments/dtm5bc/mars_l... from 2019.

The term you're looking for is loitering munitions. From Wikipedia: "Some loitering munitions may return and be recovered by the operator if they are unused in an attack and have enough fuel"

timerol··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
Already-built nuclear is cheap to keep running. Constructing new nuclear is what's expensive. Phasing out nuclear means that you already paid the big cost, but don't want to get the benefits
timerol··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
It's already adjusted for inflation, like most economic statistics posted by non-cranks. "Real" means inflation adjusted, "nominal" means not adjusted

Your original comment did not mention that your home folder was 165 GB, which is extremely relevant here
timerol··on Making any integer with four 2s
> And 2 is just S(S(0))

This is a good example of why you need rules on which functions are allowed. Repeated application of the successor function makes the entire exercise trivial

timerol··on After layoffs, Meta rewards top executives with a substantial bonus increase
That same word is popular in Australia. In Polish, a similar insult (presumably) begins with the letter K
timerol··on GPT4 level intelligence fell 1000x in 18 months
The headline reads very oddly, and I was wondering how GPT4 got significantly less intelligent. It's that the cost of GPT4-level intelligence has dropped 1000x in 18 months
timerol··on XOR
Yes, but as mentioned in TFA, storing the difference would require an extra bit. The difference between two 32 bit numbers is in the range [-2^32 -1, 2^32-1], needing 33 bits to store. The XOR is the same size as the original pointer, simplifying data flow.

But even so, storing a doubly linked list with only pointer differences and no absolute pointers (other than head and tail) feels illegal too

timerol··on More Solar and Battery Storage Added to TX Grid Than Other Power Src Last Year
It's worth noting that for 2, projects are generally quoted in just "hours", with the storage capacity in MWh implied
timerol··on I built a failed startups goods website and named it VcSubsidized.com
My first thought was that the was gonna be more like the defunct VC Fund My Life (vcfml.com), but I suppose growth-hacking startups that offer extravagant coupon codes for "Uber for naps" are so last decade. The new hit thing is apparently startups folding.
timerol··on The Prophet of Parking: A eulogy for the great Donald Shoup
Yes, because people respond to incentives. A few dollars a month for parking is enough for people to junk their broken cars instead of leaving them on the street. A few dollars a day is enough to make people reconsider getting a second car. A few dollars an hour is enough to make people carpool and limit their stay.

The point of charging for parking is not just to collect funds, it's to make sure parking is available.
