tijs··on Show HN: Breather – a network of private rooms unlocked with your mobile phone
Is it my dirty mind or does this sound like a website for Japanese style love hotels?
tijs··on The future of Fiber
In sweden this sort of thing is done by the city/state not 'the market' which makes for a different set of arguments: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_premises_by_count...
tijs··on Software Startups Get JetBrains Tools at 50% Off
Haha, they must be loving this thread over at Jetbrains. PyCharm user here since it came out. Tried just about everything else but after i started using PyCharm i haven't looked back.

My only gripe is perhaps performance. If you want to run a reasonably large Django project in debug mode you better bring some serious hardware. My 2011 Macbook Air with 4GB was nowhere near fast enough to do that, have since upgraded to a 16GB pro and now it's fine.

tijs··on Dropbox raises about $250 million at $10 billion valuation
+1 as well. just downgraded to free one or two weeks back and use dropbox only as shared storage for some iOS apps now. For actual sharing/backups i use AeroFS which works fine with off site storage (limited only by my ability to add cheap redundant disks) and is much quicker & cheaper.
tijs··on Google buying Nest Labs for $3.2 billion
Somehow Google in my thermostat is a bit creepier than Google in my phone.
tijs··on PirateBrowser - No more censorship
The obvious goal of this project is to be able to browse torrent sites even if your country blocks those... The "No more censorship" headline seems to give people the impression that this is some kind of privacy tool which (as stated in the FAQ) is not the intention.
tijs··on How Gmail’s Image Caching Affects Open Tracking
ok makes sense. a file hash might fix that and save google some bandwidth but i imagine they do not want to break tracking completely for now...
tijs··on How Gmail’s Image Caching Affects Open Tracking
yeah i was wondering that as well. if they tested 'around the office' as the post seems to indicate they might have missed the effect that for every extra person that opens an email the picture is coming from google's cache and thus the open is not counted.
tijs··on What Really Drove 23andMe And The FDA Apart
yeah man. Because people act completely rational when their terrified of dying and would certainly take the utmost care to vet every 'solution' offered to them.
tijs··on What Really Drove 23andMe And The FDA Apart
Nope. Me and my Dad did tests at 23andme and a British university lab and according to the 23andme test i'm not a family member of well.. myself (nor my dad). If a test is not good enough to predict family members or even the same person i would not hold any of their other 'conclusions' in high regard either.
tijs··on This weekend project someone wants to buy at $10,000 bucks
Sell for $16.000. Go build something else. Repeat.
tijs··on Someone Forced World Internet Traffic Through Belarus and Iceland
Your quite right, but it's not so important to the story he is trying to tell as to warrant the reaction of the OC
tijs··on Someone Forced World Internet Traffic Through Belarus and Iceland
I think you are not taking into account that he's writing this for a, what i would call, moderately technical audience. In a sense it -is- a man in the middle attack as someone seems to have tried to put himself between the internet user and the requested service. To explain it as such at least makes it easier to understand for 'normal' people even if it's not 100% correct which in this case for this audience is just not that relevant.
tijs··on Coin
These hold 12 max but they do offer rfid protection and i guess you could get 2 (1 business, 1 personal?)

tijs··on Groupon sales rep threatens restaurant with negative Yelp reviews
Managers tend to hire people that mirror their own behaviour. If this guy is getting promoted fair chance there's more of his ilk at Groupon.
tijs··on The Get-Rid-Of-Crap-Every-Month Club
Would it not save everybody time and money if you simply drive to the thrift store every month. A recurring calender reminder will do... They do have thrift stores in the US as far as i know right?
tijs··on The Internet is a surveillance state
It's not like your friends would suddenly not know who you are anymore. You do also talk to your friends in person right? I use a fake name on FB and so do lots of my friends. Like the OC says; there's no magic.

I also use an alias email address. Together you can use FB apps without spreading too much easy data around.

tijs··on Why a one-room West Virginia library runs a $20,000 Cisco router
If the comparisons a few comment up are correct that same tram line would have cost $11 billion+ in the US though.
tijs··on Heroku Blog: Routing Performance Update
That business model is basically what Cloud66 seems to be doing: https://www.cloud66.com/

Looks pretty decent, would make sense to see something similar for other stacks.

tijs··on Show HN: Twosome - app created originally for my girlfriend
Haha, it didn't tug any of my strings but it's a very very well down product video nonetheless. Way beyond the usual, hey look at feature 1, 2, 3 etc. Love that it tells a little story and actually includes some drama instead of just all cheer. Kudos to whoever came up with that one.
tijs··on Why Muting is the next big era of the Internet
Yes that makes sense. Not an easy problem to fix as ideally it would take minimal management but as new 'keywords' need filtering with every new event flooding your stream you'd be spending all your time filtering. Kinda defeats the purpose. Maybe you'd want to set a maximum distraction level per day over all your social media and simply mute the biggest meme offenders automatically. I might even sign up for that :)
tijs··on Why Muting is the next big era of the Internet
I think there definitely is a market for better filters. But i do think it's a bit weird that we seem to need more technology to save us from technology. Instead of muting users you follow the more obvious fix is simple; unfollow some of those people, unsubscribe from those newsletters, mailing lists and RSS feeds and basically close the tap instead of corking the firehose.
tijs··on CookiesOK browser plugin
Current advertising networks use cookies for analytics and cross site profiling. While useful for advertisers it does have privacy implications and there is no, technical, reason why an advertising network could not serve advertisements without the 3rd party cookies.
tijs··on Never Lie About Who You Really Are
i'm simply suggesting your making it seems easier than it is.
tijs··on Never Lie About Who You Really Are
"A cab driver asks if you have kids"

So your answer would be no? Then you'd have to lie each time. Or would your answer be; sorry but i won't answer that question. That would work i guess but it would get tiring as well i'm sure.

tijs··on WTF Google, you stole my $5
I had some issues with my Nexus 7 which i bought in the Netherlands and was a bit peeved to find the contact us page for the Nexus 7 is literally an empty page. No contact information whatsoever. This was a few months back. I just checked; it's still empty: http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/request.py?contact_...
tijs··on Facebook ruins Zuckerberg Xmas
And making demands and disciplining someone through the public channel of Twitter instead of just calling your supposed friend is very decent and polite you think?
tijs··on Help HN: Developer laid off 5 days before Christmas, have kids
Everybody enjoys a good Christmas story so after you get that new job somewhere early next year, as seems a given, do come back here and tell us where you ended up :)
tijs··on HTML5 Bones: The template that goes back to basics
I love what you've done here. It's indeed a great starting template and unlike that -other- html5 template it does a good job explaining why you would or wouldn't use some of the elements.

I also disagree with some of the other commenters on the inclusion of GA code, yeah it could do without but i have never put a site online that didn't have that tag in it while i have released many that did not need Modernizr, jquery or some of the other fancy pants stuff in boilerplate.

Also i love the plug-and-play video template. Well done sir!

tijs··on Show HN: Bitdeli - Create custom analytics with Python, share on GitHub
I too would pick it up sooner if there was an (almost) free plan with some strict limits. That way i could use it in say a hobby project or something that's still in beta and figure out if it works for me before running up hefty costs right away. This is a product phase where usually stuff like hosting is free still (Heroku and such have free tiers) and $49/month is suddenly a lot in comparison.
