The thing is, type isn't decorative. It's integral to the presentation of content. [Good] designers know how to make type legible and readable, as well as appealing, to the greatest number of people. I'm not talking about preserving type in syndicated content, just in the original format. Good designers also know how to present content in a way that is effective on a variety of platforms.

In addition to jcampbell1's remarks, which are completely correct, the zooming override issue you mention is, in my experience, nonexistent. I may be wrong, but I have not recently* encountered it on FF, IE, Opera, nor Chrome.

Em sizing is counterproductive because 1. That's not how most designers think, (We use Points, Pica, and Pixels.), 2. It's unnecessary for scaling with normally configured browsers, and 3. If someone changes their default type size, I am NOT going to support them: they have full knowledge of how to change the setting to fix a suboptimal page, and they have chosen to have suboptimal pages in the majority of their browsing (You think leading and optimal line width don't matter just as much as text size?) To anyone who actually forces their typeface choice: please do so on a site-by-site basis--or at least typeface-by-typeface for those you find illegible. Please do not try to override the informed choices of typographically-aware designers.

Sorry if that sounded like a rant. :) I'm a designer, and I'm passionate about my work being displayed and read the way I designed it to. Otherwise, I'd give every user a typeface selection screen when they visit my websites. The fact is, average users don't make informed choices.

tiddchristopher··on The magic button — Make Everything OK
But that doesn't "doesn't do anything"--it reloads the page.
tiddchristopher··on Cobra Effect: Lionfish-style
Credentials don't matter. The idea--or, at least, a very similar one in terms of economic incentives--has been tried, and it resulted in the cobra effect. So it's not entirely out of place to condemn the idea.
tiddchristopher··on XKCD's Randall Munroe on Google+ requiring your gender to be public
That sounds like a great option for use within your account. On the other hand, someone could easily want to be referred to as "he" in his UI, but not want to present that to other users.
tiddchristopher··on XKCD's Randall Munroe on Google+ requiring your gender to be public
Male, female, other, and leave blank / prefer not to disclose are all the options I would list. It's important to allow women and men who do not want to disclose their gender that option. It's also important to allow people who would like to list their gender as other to do so. Gender is an extremely tricky issue. Whatever you do, I recommend NOT listing "male to female" or anything of that sort. Transgendered people identify, from my understanding, as their adopted (actual) gender, not the one society would often assume them to have. I hope this helps.
tiddchristopher··on Childish behaviour
I, a man, would very likely avoid any project using this library. So it's more than "her problem". A name like this is especially degrading to a single group. If I named a library a racial slur, I wouldn't expect people to be happy about it. And I wouldn't expect only people of the "offended" group to complain. It's an affront to the dignity of the F/OSS community to put up with this.
tiddchristopher··on Calling Bullshit on Unpaid Interships
It's a matter of legality in the United States.

"Among those criteria are that the internship should be similar to the training given in a vocational school or academic institution, that the intern does not displace regular paid workers and that the employer 'derives no immediate advantage' from the intern’s activities [. . .]" https://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html

tiddchristopher··on How to invite people to Google+
I'm also really keen on getting into G+. There are a lot of great things about it, judging from the demo, but it's a shame it's so exclusive right now. I hope it's just a marketing ploy, rather than a technical fear. If the service isn't reliable--or has a reputation as such--it has no chance of competing with Facebook.

[REDACTED] if anyone's interested in inviting a stranger.

Edit: Fixed a typo (repeated word). Edit 2: Invited. Thanks!

tiddchristopher··on Why Your Form Checkboxes Need to Have Label Tags
There's a form I recall using multiple times that has labels for everything but a single checkbox: the box which, it so happens, defaults to "yes" for the installation of a piece of bloatware. I'm fairly sure it's in the Java installer. The practice disgusts me.

The person you replied to might not be a native English speaker. Demand shares a common ancestry with the verb "to ask" in some languages. Take French's "demander" and you might see why someone could use "demand" in a way that sounds confrontational in English but quite normal in another language.
tiddchristopher··on PDF Reader in JavaScript
Typographic ligatures (character combinations such as ff and fi) are being displayed as gray rectangles in Firefox 4 on Windows 7.
tiddchristopher··on He who refuses to do arithmetic is doomed to talk nonsense
I would argue arithmetic is founded in logic, not the reverse. It's foolish to believe mathematics are anything more natural than an invention predicated on logical notions.
tiddchristopher··on Online services I pay for
No USA service, either. I would have considered Spotify, but I went with Pandora because of this limitation.
tiddchristopher··on CS Education: The Deep End of the Pool
I believe the AP Computer Science AB exam was discontinued after 2009.
tiddchristopher··on Why designers need to stop moaning about 99designs.com
I don't trust a designer with a malformed link on his homepage.
tiddchristopher··on PNG that works
When saving and closing an image, only to realize you need need to change something, thus necessitating a second save, which compounds loss. Granted, if you keep a lossless file around to edit, your problem is gone. But does everyone really do that with every file?
tiddchristopher··on Apple Keyboard in pure CSS.
I tried pressing Caps Lock and Escape depressed, then I remembered that I have it mapped.
tiddchristopher··on Evil.css: an evil stylesheet for injecting into unsuspecting users' webpages
I experience only minimal, practically unnoticeable, slowdown with the stylesheet. (Firefox 4, Beta 12, badged as Iceweasel, on a Debian 64-bit system.)
tiddchristopher··on Life Without Photoshop
In my experience, Fireworks is far less useful when it comes to the creation of graphics after the initial wireframing. On the other hand, Photoshop [and GIMP] is completely usable throughout the entire design process. For this reason, many designers would rather learn, and pay for, only one product, and that product is Photoshop. As a side note, although GIMP lags in a few areas, notably on the typography side of things, it's the best product for my needs when I weigh cost and features, and only rarely do I find myself wishing I had tossed several hundred dollars for Photoshop.
