tiagobraw··on Why the Amazon River Can't Be Crossed by Bridge (2018)
When I was young (I think I was 18 years old), me and my dad traveled across all the length of Amazon river (from Belém to Manaus) in a crowded boat sleeping on hammocks, it was a 6 days trip. https://goo.gl/maps/BFkCPx1HR1n

In some places the river was really narrow and almost could be crossed by swimming, but there where times that I couldn't see any of the two margins because of its enormous width.

Is was a really great experience, got to talk to indigenous people, saw a lot of botos cor-de-rosa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_river_dolphin) and got to eat amazing local dishes.

would you rather have your mother looking at your phone or that creepy neighbor from down the street?

I just tell myself "Stop being a f*ing loser and do what needs to be done!". It works.

tiagobraw··on Ethereum: Chain of Liars and Thieves
Well, he said that it would be bias in the first paragraph of this article.

> His post describes everything without any bias and with plenty of proof. Mine will have a slight bias in a certain direction.

It doesn't make it any less interesting.

tiagobraw··on You probably don't need a JavaScript framework
it is not only nice, but also necessary. If you build a project with a technology you don't understand you are going to invest a significant amount of time anyway, but it might not give you what you want in the end.
tiagobraw··on High Performance Erlang – Finding Bottlenecks in a CouchDB Cluster
My new year resolution was to learn Erlang. I am implementing a simple REST service with it and I'm loving its approach to concurrency and terseness. It is indeed a beautiful language.
tiagobraw··on Visual Turing Test
Note that it is much easier for a computer to create a human-like painting than to behave like a human. The Turing test requires a two-way interaction medium.
tiagobraw··on Comodo “Chromodo” Browser disables same origin policy
I recommend Glasswire, it's a gui for the Windows firewall with a beautiful interface. It could be better, but is quite useful.
tiagobraw··on Pikazo
The artist is someone who makes art. The problem is to define what is art. Its when the artist (or others) says so.

tiagobraw··on The Synthesis of Reliable Organisms from Unreliable Parts (1956) [pdf]
Well, he did created the Von Newmann Architecture [1] and various other concepts that are still used in modern computers. So, I would say that his work is very influential in CS.

tiagobraw··on Emulating exceptions in C: a case study
Well, Lua coroutines uses longjmp and they're not "fairly simple" in any way.

I don't think it is a circular reasoning. There's always the good and the bad way to use something, even C++ exceptions.

tiagobraw··on List of URLs checked by Twitter for its app targeting
I am sorry for my ignorance, but can somebody explain what this list means? How are they checking for those URLS? Are they monitoring all URLs I visit in my device? Should I be concerned?
tiagobraw··on Why Events Are A Bad Idea For High-Concurrency Servers (2003)
Ah, this paper is classic... It is a response to the other (equally classic) paper "Why threads are a bad idea" [0].

In fact, threads and events are dual [1], and one can be made as efficient and the other (given a proper implementation).

tiagobraw··on Kofi Annan: Stop 'war on drugs'
The article is co-written by Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former president of Brazil.

I didn't like him when he was the president, but I do like very much his approach to legalize/decriminalize drugs... Kudos for them!

tiagobraw··on I failed a Twitter interview
Once I failed at a google interview... I got 2 answers right but I couldn't answer a third math related question (because the time was over).

The recruiter asked me what was the maximum number of edges on a graph without cycles.

When I was on my way home (in a bus) I had this "a-ha" moment.

Well, they lost a great computer scientist in their team! :P
