thunfischtoast··on Claude Opus 4.6
Thanks for the tip!
thunfischtoast··on Rentahuman – The Meatspace Layer for AI
How long until a AI builds an alternative economy made up of entities it controls?
thunfischtoast··on Euro firms must ditch Uncle Sam's clouds and go EU-native
I once had a working program, running on a 4 GB RAM virtual server with MongoDB. Everything was fast and testing and deploying a new version took me some minutes usually. Existing users were happy as far as I could tell.

But then some corporate IT guy mandated everything had to be using managed AWS services in some three tier dev-test-production setup, despite having no prior experience with that on either side. Cost went up at least 25-fold, the development sucked, new deployments took 30? minutes minimum (because now everything has to run through some build-system I did not control and I had to manually copy keys around every time). I left the company, but I think the product exists to this day with less than 1000 customers. Nothing my 4 GB VS could handle...

> There are also quite a lot of articles about how startups (in any country) focus needlesly on large scalability when they only really have a few customers. It's exactly the same false issue here.

Large companies do that as well

thunfischtoast··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
The Windows 11-way is to just plaster another, worse, context menu over the working existing one. Now every right click was actually two clicks. You can disable it, but what the hell...
thunfischtoast··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
How generous of them to allow their paying user to disable the ads. It's only a matter of time until this either becomes some sort of premium feature.
thunfischtoast··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
I find Claude Code in VS Code is sometimes horribly inefficient. I tell it to replace some print-statements with proper logging in the one file I have open and it first starts burning tokens to understand the codebase for the 13th time today, despite not needing to and having it laid out in the CLAUDE.md already.
thunfischtoast··on Doing the thing is doing the thing
A lot of tech-savvy people (like me) love solving meta-problems. Doing the thing that would take 10 minutes? Na man, let me build an unnecessary complicated technical solution that in theory enables hundreds of people to do the thing much more efficiently in just 2 minutes. That takes a month and the thing has not been done, ha.
thunfischtoast··on Doing the thing is doing the thing
I think the point is people mistaking planning, preparation, talking about the thing... for doing the thing.
thunfischtoast··on Comma openpilot – Open source driver-assistance
I've made a similar experience. Not having to focus on my exact speed all the time (using adaptive cruise control) enables me to watch the mirrors more. It also enables me to keep my attention over multiple hours.

On a kinda unrelated note: I lately see more and more people watching streams or Tik Tok while driving. If of course you use your newly acquired freedom for that it will lead to more accidents.

thunfischtoast··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
I've also see OpenCode around, but have yet to try it. I wonder how it compares to Roo Code
thunfischtoast··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
I've used the Anthropic models mostly through Openrouter using aider. With so much buzz around Claude Code I wantes to try it out and thought that a subscription might be more cost efficient for me. I was kinda disappointed by how quickly I hit the quota limit. Claude Code gives me a lot more freedom than what aider can do, on the other side I have the feeling that pure coding tasks work better through aider or Roo Code. The API version is also much much faster that the subscription one.

This comment section: people who do nothing condemn people who do something for not doing another thing.
thunfischtoast··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
That entirely depends on your business case. If that call costing 50 Cent has done something for me which would have taken me more than 1 minute of paid working time to do it's sustainable.
thunfischtoast··on Eat Real Food
The "protein" part of the "new" pyramid does not mention legumes (beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, lupins...) despite them being a highly efficient source of proteins.
thunfischtoast··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
A great exercise while being still is to put your attention to various parts of your body: what does the air smell like? What do you hear? How does the chair under your butt and the ground under your feet feel like? Try not to think too much, let the thoughts come and go like cars on a motorway, but observe closely in and around you.
thunfischtoast··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
This was a very recent change. Just yesterday the same line read "The next generation of Linux gaming". So it's good someone is taking feedback!
thunfischtoast··on Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10
Direct Share is a "feature" where some contacts are displayed in the first row when you want to share some file. Unforunately, these contacts are not relevant and cannot be edited. They are just some random numbers and whatsapp groups for me. I cannot comprehend how this can be overlooked.
thunfischtoast··on Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10
Now fix Direct Share on android, which is a highly broken feature and has been for years.
thunfischtoast··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
Maybe far down the road. For now I'm fine with a minimal tool that does not aim to take out the human interaction in the group haha. If the tool finds a small community more features might be added like content-based recommendations, but I don't want to drive up the costs right now
thunfischtoast··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
I'm working on a little website that helps me and my friends to decide easier what to play on a gamenight, because it always goes like this: - I want to play x and y - I want to play y and z - I don't have z - I don't really feel x - Lets play b - I'd rater play c - Let's settle on d - Today H is joining, he does not have d

It'll work in sessions where first everyone can suggest games, then in the second phase veto out suggestions, then vote and it'll display the games with the highest vote. You can also manage/import a list of your games and it'll show who owns what. It's geared towards video games, but will work for board games too. Hope to release it for everyone in the next weeks.

Wonderful!
thunfischtoast··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
I agree, but your points becomes stronger when you leave Netflix away. Netflix is a private entertainment company, and when I don't like their conditions I can always quit.

Banks on the other hand have so much more control over my life. With their apps being locked to the two major mobile OS I have many hoops to go through when I want to use an alternative one. It's not impossible yet, but it becomes very cumbersome to do so.

thunfischtoast··on Zenobia Pay – A mission to build an alternative to high-fee card networks
Interesting read. I'd suggest next time choosing a name that does not sound close to Xenophobia :) anyway, good luck on your further journey
thunfischtoast··on US to rewrite its past national climate reports
"Then they went back to the barn, and there, sure enough, painted on the wall, it said: 'No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.' And underneath, in slightly smaller letters, it said: 'Sheets are a human invention.'"

Modern Reddit does this as well. All kinds of useless notifications like "Your comment go 10 upvotes, congratulations!". Its not as bad on the old.reddit.com version

thunfischtoast··on Federal workers ordered to return to offices without desks, Wi-Fi and lights
The US-government is interspersed with oligarchs who want to diminish the ability of the government to actually act so that they can argue why everything should be privatized.
