thunderrabbit··on PHP 8: Before and After
While not free, Paul M Jones book Modernizing Legacy Applications in PHP has really helped me get control of a large old codebase.

https://leanpub.com/mlaphp

It gives examples and goes bit by bit through the process of organizing code.

I'm using its suggestions along with a static checker called Phan, which I chose because it attempts to "prove incorrectness rather than correctness."

thunderrabbit··on We deleted the production database by accident
> not possible to accidentally rm -rf with proper design.

Can you say more about this?

I understand rm -rf, but not sure how I could design that to be impossible for the most dangerous credentials.

thunderrabbit··on Why I link to Wayback Machine instead of original web content
Agreed. I usually link to both the original and then archive.org in parentheses.
thunderrabbit··on Possible detection of a black hole with a mass thought to be impossible
Cool!
thunderrabbit··on Possible detection of a black hole with a mass thought to be impossible
Oh wow so it's exactly the opposite of my guess. Thank you for your explanation.

It now makes perfect sense to me that more massive objects wouldn't revolve quickly enough to create high frequency waves.

thunderrabbit··on Possible detection of a black hole with a mass thought to be impossible
Why are LIGO and Virgo not mechanically capable of detecting the collisions of supermassive black holes?

Is it because the amplitude is so big it "pegs the needle" above its limit?

thunderrabbit··on Heyyyyyyyyyyyy.com
If you wait until the end of the redirects, it goes back to where you were originally.
thunderrabbit··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
Your answer reminds me; we are focusing on Hacker News as if it's its own thing, but part of the answer is right in the URL. HN is a part of ycombinator, which presumably pays the bills.
thunderrabbit··on Drivers who keep their windows down are exposed to 80 percent more air pollution
> air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year
thunderrabbit··on The Math of Card Shuffling (2018)
Why can't I keep riffling once the King reaches the top?

I thought I had found my next idle clicker.

thunderrabbit··on What if Planet 9 is a Primordial Black Hole?
Assuming its location can be determined, what experiments would you like to try in its vicinity?
thunderrabbit··on An origin story for a family of oddball meteorites
How can they even begin to know these meteorites are

1) from the same body, 2) whether such bodies were melted or not 3) that this body was actually both?

thunderrabbit··on The Diamond-Square Algorithm
Does "Noise Scaling" mean randomness?
thunderrabbit··on Every year I fill out this survey from Apple, for Apple developers

*app discovery

Thank you for the funny typo "ad discovery"

"We curate the finest ads for your consumer experience.."

thunderrabbit··on My Favourite Diff
And it doesn't show an actual diff.
thunderrabbit··on “Just walk out” technology by Amazon
I wonder what percentage of people will still have a job there?
thunderrabbit··on Histories Hidden in the Periodic Table
I wonder what analogues exist between naming chemical elements and the history of allocating IPv4 addresses or short domain names
thunderrabbit··on Redneck Bank
It didn't load at all for me.
thunderrabbit··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
They would lose the ability to sell hardware.

They would have to specify which hardware was supported, which would automatically give those suppliers a boost and Apple would lose the markup.

If they didn't specify supported systems, they'd have to support more hardware, which is a pain.

thunderrabbit··on Designing a service for password-less temporary access to resources
> ValidUntil configures how long the access will last.

My understanding of your use case is stopping indefinite "exponential" forwarding.

I wonder if the ValidUntil timer could start when the shortlink is first accessed.

That way you can shorten the time it lasts in the wild and let it be indefinitely available for the first intended recipient.

thunderrabbit··on Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions?
There's a correct form for pull-ups??
thunderrabbit··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
Because they want the people to be on their side, "thinking of the children" and all that instead of thinking about Big Brother having access to everything.
thunderrabbit··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
> This is not about stopping the bad people from encrypting their messages, this is about getting access to what everyone else is saying.

Thank you.

I created an account and tested the subscription function.

1) The subscription URL starts with http: instead of https: though your site has SSL set up.

2) The subscription URL can only be used by someone who is logged in. To improve onboarding, I think it should go to the create account screen as opposed to the login screen.

For me personally, I won't use (divulge my friend's email addresses to) this software unless it's open source and I can host it on my own server.

I'd be happy to donate $20 if I end up using it.

thunderrabbit··on This Article Does Not Exist
I kept thinking well that headline's a bit weird hmm. I guess it's not that good yet.
thunderrabbit··on Learning from OpenBSD can make computers marginally less horrible
This article helped me understand a lot; I knew development on iOS required constant updates, but now I know why. Thank you.

BTW, there are several misspellings of "its" in your article. Search for "it's" because most of them should be changed to "its"
