thunderrabbit··on Message in a bottle from Scottish girl found in Norway after 25 years
Yep me too. I still feel sad about it sometimes.
thunderrabbit··on Ask HN: Free mail service for custom domains - G Suite alternative
Yes, email attachments take up a lot of space.

But anyone who tries to auto-delete my attachments will never get my patronage.

Why do you want to cripple email to create a free service? This seems like a race to the bottom, with very little upside for you.

I zoomed in a bit on mobile and found a red circle.
thunderrabbit··on Ask HN: How much do you earn? (feel free to use throwaway account)
I make USD $2300 per month freelance so like 28,000 USD per year. Basically living paycheck to paycheck, each year thinking I'll get my own business going.
thunderrabbit··on Godot Engine receiving a new grant from Meta's Reality Labs
Thank you Godot team for being fantastic!

thunderrabbit··on NocoDB – Turn your SQL database into a Nocode platform
That's great news! Thank you for the update, and nice work moving things forward. :-)
thunderrabbit··on NocoDB – Turn your SQL database into a Nocode platform
nocodb dev team was very generous for me when helping me evaluate their product for my use case, including creating a test environment to understand my request.

I ended up not using them, but they created an issue for me on GitHub, saying my request was on their roadmap.

https://github.com/nocodb/nocodb/issues/580

Oh and they quickly researched a solution to an installation bug I was experiencing.

https://github.com/nocodb/nocodb/issues/579

TL;DR: great customer service from nocodb, so I'm happy to consider nocodb for future projects.

thunderrabbit··on Motorist fined after CCTV confuses his number plate with woman’s T-shirt
They had a laugh because it's funny the first time, but this type of error will cause nightmares if the problem is not dealt with quickly.

Serious question: what would it take to make it illegal to send false tickets?

I am not a lawyer, but I think falsely accusing someone of a crime can be a crime if it's "known to be false"

In this case it wasn't "known" to be false because there was no human checking things.. but the fact they (who?) sent the ticket means they assumed it was true.

thunderrabbit··on Tanaka Hisashige, builder of the Myriad Year Clock (2016)
I recently got to tour the Toshiba Science Museum where the replica is running.

One of the employees checks the clock "about five times a day" when he's working. He checks the accuracy of the western style clock and the humidity in the glass case in which the clock is housed.

I don't recall at what percent they keep the humidity, but they have packets hidden under the clock which release moisture and absorb moisture as needed from the air in the case.

thunderrabbit··on Electric aircraft set to take flight by 2026 under new agreements
Thank you for bringing up this other conclusion. I still side with Wendover overall.

Even if batteries have to be replaced that often now, the technology will continue to improve, becoming both cheaper and more reliable.

Computers used to be the size of rooms and break due to literal insects in them.

thunderrabbit··on Former Navy pilot says flight crews saw Atlantic Coast UFOs every day for years
From the article:

> [Former Navy Lieutenant Ryan] Graves is calling those objects a threat to security...

In the larger picture, Steven Greer has been explaining(1) for years what's now happening:

> there is the disclosure the powers that be would like to see: Manipulated. Calculated to consolidate power and engender fear. Configured in such a way that chaos and a deepening need for Big Brother is carefully inculcated into the masses.

thunderrabbit··on The Peculiar Math That Could Underlie the Laws of Nature
Ohhh shoot. I guess that's egg on my face!
thunderrabbit··on The Peculiar Math That Could Underlie the Laws of Nature
> it’s very difficult to think of a nonassociative situation.” If, instead of putting on socks then shoes, you first put your socks into your shoes, technically you should still then be able to put your feet into both and get the same result. “The parentheses feel artificial.”

I suggest the parenthesis are not artificial: they specify an order of operations. i.e. they specify the timing of operations.

Choosing a, b, c as things that change with time makes it easy to think of nonassociative examples:

(Crack open an egg) then (cook it) = (scrambled egg)

(Cook an egg) then (peel it) = (boiled egg)

thunderrabbit··on Why can't I write code inside my browser?
Learning a new language is hard, whether it's a spoken language or, in this case, the incantations on command line.

Your comment to which I'm replying now shows that you do have the ability to learn this new language. You've correctly and successfully used the term "SO" to refer to a popular resource on programming. You have successfully "fired up the terminal." You've even used the terminal to echo $PATH. You're making great progress! :-)

The particular idea of installing node.js by default in web browsers seems to me like installing toasters on sofas. That would make it easier to make toast without going to the kitchen, but is not something that most people would want.

> why do I need to ______?

This is the current state of computers and programming. Computers are just concentrated piles of logic gates and they don't actually know what they are doing.

thunderrabbit··on CIA Releases UFO Documents
By way of the Freedom of Information Act, thousands of the CIA documents on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) — or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), as the government calls them — are now accessible via download at the Black Vault, a website operated by author and podcaster John Greenwald Jr.

The CIA claims they have now provided all the information on UAP they have, though there is no way to know that’s true.

“Research by The Black Vault will continue to see if there are additional documents still uncovered within the CIA’s holdings,” Greenwald promised in a statement on his website.

The release comes months before the Pentagon was due to brief Congress on all they know about UAP — a date dictated in the most recent COVID-19 relief bill, of all places, which passed in late December.

The demands for alien intel became so many that the CIA eventually compiled it onto a CD-ROM, obtained by Greenwald and uploaded to the Black Vault, divvied into dozens of downloadable .PDFs.

Dr. Greer's assessment is that this is a continuation of the slow but steady narrative that UFOs and ETI are real but that they are a threat. The ETs are NOT the threat as Dr. Greer has continually stated. The threat is the military industrial complex juggernaut towards interplanetary war.

Please see his article : When Disclosure serves Secrecy.

From Dr. Greer's paper:

"Do not be deceived. You need to be awake to the darker scenarios which some would like to thrust upon the world. And you need to know that there are alternatives. If a ‘disclosure’ is unleashed on the world which is xenophobic, militaristic and terrifying, know that it comes from the spinmeisters of secrecy- regardless of how respectable the person or group may appear to be.

And remember: Part of this disclosure plan involves the use of UFO look-alike devices made by humans in an attack on Earth or military assets of Earth. This would be a well-orchestrated use of advanced human technologies to hoax an ET attack- all for the purpose of disclosing the truth with the desired military-oriented spin. In such a scenario, most of humanity will be deceived into believing the threat from space has arrived – and that we must fight it at all costs. This is nothing more than long-term social security for the military-industrial complex. There must be people who can expose this fraud. ..........

Here is another idea: Why don’t ‘we the people’ unite and launch a disclosure ......... An honest one. One which leads to peace, not war. To a sustainable and beautiful world, free of pollution and brimming with abundance, of all types. One which reaches out into the unknown, instead of firing particle beam weapons into the darkness of space."

thunderrabbit··on CIA Releases UFO Documents
For a while Steven Greer has been saying the government is prepping for a false flag UFO "attack" to perpetuate war, this time against extra terrestrials.

thunderrabbit··on The Diary of Thomas Edison on Vacation (1885)
I hand wrote my journal from about 1987 to when I moved online. I flirted with the idea of maintaining both, but that did not last long.

For aspiring journalers, always write the full date, including year. Probably write the time of day and maybe day of week to help give context to future readers. Do not worry about backtracking if you skip a day or decades. Just write starting now, otherwise the backlog will paralyze you.

That reminds me I haven't written about today yet.

thunderrabbit··on Melting ice patch in Norway reveals large collection of ancient arrows
It reminds me that this happens every year in some parts of the world, with loose items and such found in the spring.

Therefore, I imagine it happened every year in that part of Norway for the years leading up to this very long freeze that's now thawing.
