thumbuddy··on We need scientific dissidents
Uhm... It depends on the scientist. I've met a more then a handful of the "it has to be this way" types. The kind who thinks that being correct and being a brute are interchangeable words. Maybe the real problem is they feel the need to be correct about the unknown? Unclear.

Good scientists are what you describe. But they seem to be becoming more rare.

thumbuddy··on Optimization Algorithms for Planar Graphs
I somewhat agree with you, but, you can depending on graph size and time test for planarity. There are also some physical ish cases where graphs are guaranteed planar. And like most things, maybe empirically one of these methods works.
thumbuddy··on Downfall Attacks
There's probably thousands if not more. The way I always imagined this working was. agency and company work together to leave gaps in our hardware and software under the ruse of "it must be secure enough for our use." Agencies get a preemptive six months or so to find enough zero days to do what they want. The engineers at the company screaming about the issues are ignored.

Eventually a foreign adversary or domestic hacker finds one that can cause a lot of harm. As soon as they find one a DOD funded student simultaneously discovers it. Alternatively, if documents leak showing how these exploits could happen, same scenario.

Not to say all bugs are known, but I'd imagine a fair deal of them certainly are.

the trash heap of "information" for the sake of profit intensifies.
thumbuddy··on Launch HN: Rubbrband (YC W23) – Deformity detection for AI-generated images
Kind of phenomological but both parts of the GAN are the same model.
thumbuddy··on GPT Unicorn has drawn a unicorn
It could help end humanity, with human assistance. For example, expect far more successful phishing campaigns, expect the internet to become a majority of advertising bot garbage, etc.
thumbuddy··on GPT Unicorn has drawn a unicorn
That's uh a pretty loose interpretation of a unicorn...
thumbuddy··on Rising ill-health and economic inactivity from long-term sickness: 2019 to 2023
It's a pretty dumb life move to collect disability if you don't need it. I mean, you are condemning yourself to poverty and being one bad thing away from death.

Crohns is diagnosed via a biopsy iirc, it's not a diagnosis of exclusion like IBS is. Crohns is also horrific. so I wonder if you just view your friends poor health as a typical "no one wants to work anymore" way like most people do with disabled people. Fibromyalgia is somewhat a diagnosis of exclusion, but decent doctors can mostly figure it out these days. The hard thing is discerning whether it's ME CFS or not.

thumbuddy··on Documenting Plants with a 3D Printer, NFC, and Cardinal
Are we actually discussing burying plastic soon to be trash near plants so we can 'document' them? This is one of those times where I think someone solved the wrong problem.
thumbuddy··on Qalculate – A multi-purpose cross-platform desktop calculator
Qalc seems like a better calculator to me and is more stable somehow despite being written in I think C++. Not having to download a huge programming language taking up GB of space, research an ecosystem and import ten packages sounds ideal. I prefer python or R and sometimes even BC to Julia for terminal calculating anyways...

I'd let the post about qalculate be about qalculate here.

You're a good human. Continue being willing to put yourself in the line to help others. You will be remembered and admired for it.

We live in a post truth world. That's intentional. Once they can make you lose sight of reality, they can make you do anything.

Yes. Yes it is.
thumbuddy··on Rising ill-health and economic inactivity from long-term sickness: 2019 to 2023
Why do they need to explain it if all this person did was spout propaganda without explaining anything? Weird double standard to me personally...
thumbuddy··on Rising ill-health and economic inactivity from long-term sickness: 2019 to 2023
Lemme put it this way. It highly resembles fibromyalgia. Most doctors in America won't recognize fibromyalgia because in a lot of cases there is no treatment and there is no way in hell industry is going to adapt to having sick people in it, nor is disability going to recognize it. Even if they did recognize it the US disability system is a lot closer to eugenics then it is a social service.

Stay safe out there. We have to work together to help each other out on this one and related matters.

It's surprisingly effective...
thumbuddy··on We now believe that the game is over. LK-99 is not a superconductor
Probably not accounts trying to tip the market. Pay no attention to social media these days. Pay only slight attention to scientific articles. Pay more attention to preprints knowing they are preprints.
thumbuddy··on Tesla, Inc. 8-k filing – CFO leaves Tesla
If the cyber truck burned tetraethtyl lead enriched diesel in a big barrel in the back it would bring in customers that musk has a personal fondness for. Damn I should work in marketing
thumbuddy··on The Importance of Being a Code Reviewer
I agree with you. I would argue that most if not all team dysfunction arises during reviews. Ive worked on places where senior engineers will allow bugs like you've mentioned through to production so they can catch the "hard off by one problem" to get the + and stick the - on someone else. Even serious bugs. Yep leads protecting themselves from ambitious seniors and seniors protecting themselves from juniors who shouldn't be juniors. Vindictive practices, gas lighting non-technical management, etc.

So with any decent system, the weakest link is the people using it. If you have adversarial people on your team, and in my experience, you probably do, sometimes the system surrounding code review is far more important. IE reviewers share the blame(better yet there is no blame shit just gets fixed), and hard rules around being an asshole need to be enforced.

I realize you are describing a healthy work environment. Unfortunately, I've yet to find one. I almost made one once, but a wave of clandestine hires destroyed it and it was time to move on. Pissed off the wrong narcissist...

thumbuddy··on Electron band structure in germanium, my ass (2000)
Agree with this. I had to make my own equipment everywhere I went. The people I met later in my career who went to nice schools, with illustrious research experience had no idea what they were doing. Okay that's an exaggeration. But, when they entered industry they trusted every black box and rationalized every bizarre thing they saw as if their results depended entirely on their domain of interest.

Negative concentrations no problem! That must mean the machine is tracking the previous known value and this is the difference! Oh my oh my... The things I've seen the highly/expensively educated get paid lots of money to do, present, and be rewarded for in regulated industries....

thumbuddy··on $5B Google lawsuit over ‘incognito mode’ tracking moves closer to trial
It does have merit. But whether or not they pay anything for it is another matter. One things for certain... What they might pay is far less then what they made by doing it.
thumbuddy··on PayPal Launches U.S. Dollar Stablecoin
So someone else can make a ton of money by manipulating and artificial and most importantly unregulated market. IE why cryptocurrency exists at all.
thumbuddy··on PayPal Launches U.S. Dollar Stablecoin
It's cryptocurrency... Gotta get the users comfortable with sketchy from the get go so when all their cash is gone they at least aren't too surprised.
thumbuddy··on Norway to fine Meta $98,500 a day over user privacy breach from 14 August
Probably closer to dropped it on the ground but in too much of a hurry doing something else to pick it up money.
thumbuddy··on The Importance of Being a Code Reviewer
This is increasingly closer to reality. Some shops though... Whew code review is more of a weapon then anything else.
thumbuddy··on Spam spammers back
That's unwise too...maybe most phishers aren't great hackers but don't give strangers with malicious intent access to your machine.
thumbuddy··on US firm sued by man fired 'for speaking in Hindi'
Unsurprising and sad. I hope he gets a settlement big enough to teach people to stop going around destroying people for being different.
thumbuddy··on On the link between Lyme disease and bioweapons (2019)
They and other agencies are also involved in the psychological experiment business. Historically and probably currently. All the data they've got these days and various means to interact with their subjects is probably pretty wild.
