Alone on the shore in the pause of the night-time, I stand and I hear the long wind blow light, I view the constellations quietly, quietly burning; I hear the wave fall in the hush of the night

Long after I am dead, ended this bitter journey, Many another whose heart holds no light, Shall your solemn sweetness, hush, awe, and comfort, O my companions, Wind, Waters, Stars, and Night.

thsowers··on How Shopify Manages API Versioning and Breaking Changes
> Shopify made a change to their API that was easily measurable on who it would affect

What was the change?

thsowers··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
I too have run into this recently at work. IntelliJ for Rust, Dart, JS/TS, PHP etc but I break out Rider for C#. Would be a dream if one day these were combined so IntelliJ would be a true polygot IDE
thsowers··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
If you use their flagship offering, IntelliJ, it includes language support for Python, Javascript, and many other languages either directly or via a plugin that replaces most of the respective functionality of Webstorm, Pycharm and Rubymine. Just some niche features (like a C debugger only found in CLion) are unique to the other IDEs IIRC
thsowers··on Google bans niche browsers from Gmail?
For me, after switching to fastmail my load time in browser went from around 30 seconds with the "new" gmail to under 5 with fastmail. Using HTML view on gmail the speed is more comparable
thsowers··on The world needs more search engines
IIRC, they actually removed the "Don't be Evil" motto in may of 2018
thsowers··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I'm thankful that my mother was able to "beat" cancer for at least the time being. I am extremely grateful for the time that I have with her.

I am thankful to music, for being so diverse, and so amazing. It has given my life much meaning in times of both light and dark.

I am thankful to nature; hills, valleys, wind, water, stars, forests and mountains, for their indescribable beauty

thsowers··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
While I can appreciate some healthy skepticism on how widespread the practice is, welcoming honest input from rank and file members of any company can be extremely valuable to improving the quality of products, and many successful companies realize this and encourage such feedback
thsowers··on Using Firefox for a faster, calmer and distraction-free internet
Nit: This article recommends StartPage as a search engine "without all that tracking and profiling", but quite recently StartPage was acquired by System1, an advertising company[0]

thsowers··on Gitlab cancels plan on tracking user behavior on GitLab.com
Is this supposed to read "misunderstands"? And if not, could you elaborate?
thsowers··on Gitlab ‘rethinking’ third-party telemetry
My apologies dang, I didn't mean to directly insinuate that this was happening, just that it could lead credence to those rumors.

Thanks for taking care of the situation, and for further demonstrating what top notch moderation should look like

edit: Thank you for explaining the policy! I think it's excellent.

thsowers··on Thanks Gitlab
+1 Same here. There were also some interesting comments and discussion going on in that thread. Understand why it was marked as a duplicate, don't understand why the threads weren't combined

edit: Thank you @dang!

thsowers··on Update on free software and telemetry
Additional discussion that is currently marked as a [dupe]: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21343761
thsowers··on Gitlab ‘rethinking’ third-party telemetry
Some conspiratorial minds might even suggest that this may of been intentional seeing that GitLab is a member of Y Combinator
thsowers··on Gitlab ‘rethinking’ third-party telemetry
@dang, can you merge these threads instead of having this one marked as a [dupe] and hidden?
thsowers··on Gitlab ‘rethinking’ third-party telemetry
No, I mean opt-in to telemetry as opposed to having to opt-out would be more ideal
thsowers··on Gitlab ‘rethinking’ third-party telemetry
Not sure why the "opt-in" option isnt more apparent as a less hostile UX?

I've always thought of Gitlab as a privacy minded company, until now, and the botched attempts to listen to feedback are only worsening my impression. Please prove me wrong!

thsowers··on Rx – Extensible pixel editor implemented in Rust, inspired by Vi
You say "already", but the repo you link to hasn't been updated in nearly five years
thsowers··on Airbnb plans public listing in 2020
A fair number, but this often doesn't stop people from ignoring this rule, listing their properties under hidden addresses etc. I would say 90%+ of the AirBnBs I've stayed at are in buildings that have banned them (especially in large cities, like Toronto)
thsowers··on NPM Bans Terminal Ads
I think another thing the author misses is that Standard is _just_ a formatting library. It doesn't need/deserve as much resources as libraries that do more and deliver more value for the developer/company such as Vue, webpack etc.

thsowers··on Neuralink Live Stream [video]
Indeed! My friends often refer to his published event times as being in "EST" or "Elon Standard Time", which we consider to be +/- a few half hours of the listed time
thsowers··on Google Cloud networking issues in us-east1
I would argue that two direct Google Cloud outages within a month is pretty concerning for GCP customers, and that it's possible that the calendar outage could also be related in someway since it is likely hosted on GCP, although that is speculation
thsowers··on Google Cloud networking issues in us-east1
Why so many problems at Google lately? Calendar down two weeks ago[0], and Google Cloud had a larger outage a month ago[1]
