thrownawaydad··on Extreme 'rogue wave' in the North Pacific confirmed as most extreme on record
Short, non-technical answer: These waves are actually the "sum" of a number of different waves (of different frequency and/or phases). It can happen that many of these _usually_ cancel each other out in the sum, but once in a blue moon, their peaks happen at virtually the same time. Then you get one massive pulse. The moments right before and after could look quite normal.

If its is not it is, it is its. If its is it is, it's it's.

I've been asked on two job applications lately whether or not I'm "asexual". I'm not, but I'm appalled to be asked this in a professional setting. If I was, I'd also be appalled, if not seriously distraught.

I immediately dropped the applications. Perhaps screening out people like me was the real goal to begin with, and maybe it's a win-win after all.

This is an excellent point. Thanks for the links. I will note that the first says I'm normal even though I sometimes feel like "life is not worth living" and my condition has definitely had a significant negative effect on my productivity. Life-long and probably life-changing.

As an N=1 report, I've been taking the Zembrin supplement (per the Astral Codex guy) for about a year, and it does _seem_ to knock out the sadness component. But this leaves the "unproductive" component, which is sometimes just a small drag, and at other times leaves me almost catatonic. Alcohol mostly fixes that, but has other problems, and I've lately quit.

No specific advice other than to just keep reading and experimenting. And if you're in a bad life situation, try to get out of it.

"but the result [of men's rights subreddits/etc] is not positive"

For me, it was positive. When you're going through personal hell, there's a lot to be said for having others in the situation to commiserate with. Do many of the guys there sound like jerks? Sure. Maybe they even are--or maybe they're just blowing off steam in the face of a horrible situation. I think it's often the latter.

One side effect of carefully banning forums that (truly) support men is that we're left with an environment where most places that might seem to be "help" are actually dedicated to gas-lighting and castigating men in this situation. This has created a vacuum where some rather dubious looking options are actually the best available.

May the gods bless my MRAs and the guys at my local dive bar. Without them, I wouldn't have made it.
