throwme_123··on Don Knuth plays with ChatGPT
This should be the top comment.

Not only by providing the correct SotA, but also noting that the graduate student, probably at an expensive University, was so "cheap" as not to buy the cheap tools for their research. Imagine physicists from the 1900s working without tools and not being able to do experiments because "we would have to buy radium so let's try with free iron that I have instead". "Radioactivity is not a thing".

Edit: Maybe someone should edit the Wikipedia intro that overly insists on very modern issues on gender. Lena herself happily participated to several research conferences on image processing: https://www.icip2015.org/banquet.html

throwme_123··on Using Bun.js as a Bundler
It depends of what you mean by browser environments (integration tests?), but vitest with happy-dom is working great for testing libraries and components.
throwme_123··on How's business at Stack Overflow?
I don't use StackOverflow anymore since ChatGPT launched.

It's kind of not fair because a large part of ChatGPT being able to answer code questions correctly comes from the SO corpus... but... well life's unjust.

throwme_123··on Using Bun.js as a Bundler
bun seems great and promising but I'm in the same boat. vite/esbuild with vitest is running perfectly, and already fast enough (and at last not struggling with webpack or rollup overall poor quality anymore...).

HMMs are probabilistic models, yes.
throwme_123··on Godot-dodo – Finetuning LLaMA on single-language comment:code data pairs
> For finetuning godot_dodo_4x_60k_llama_13b, eight A100 80GB GPUs were used.

$300k of hardware! Guess it answers my previous comment from Hetzner server https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35662925

throwme_123··on Hetzner’s New AX102 Dedicated Server with AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
I would love to have a dedicated server to run custom LLM models like llama, alpaca, but with dedicated context and memory (like knowning my codebase :).

I'm not an ai expert yet but:

1. Is this processor suitable for that?

2. Is it feasible to customize one of the LLM models directly on that machine or retraining the model requires more power?

throwme_123··on Show HN: TxtNet Browser – Browse the Web over SMS, No Wi-Fi/Mobile Data Needed
Would be super super useful over WhatsApp.

Is it possible?

There are some cases where only WhatsApp is available as free WiFi...

throwme_123··on Yellen earned millions in speaking fees from Wall St, tech firms (2021)
The US is actually one the most corrupt countries on earth.

What makes it worse: They always try to give lessons to the rest of the world, but meh.

The result is here: Record homeless Americans, drug addicts in the streets, health crisis, education crisis, while the ruling elite (it's even more hypocritical when it's the left like Yellen) gets even richer. Time for a revolution maybe.

throwme_123··on Show HN: I built a little online drum machine using 808 style samples
Thanks! I may be biased but I like Unix composability principles :)

Unless you plan to forever update your credit card on AWS, it can be better to develop without cloud and use one or more url shorteners to share (socials do it anyway).

throwme_123··on Show HN: I built a little online drum machine using 808 style samples
How big are the patterns?

Looks like the author implemented a server-side storage with tiny hash. Why not the data itself as base64? That would make it real serverless!

> As a developer, do you want to write employment contracts?

The answer is yes my friend. For solo projects. It's easy and I use the better tools for the job (pandoc).

> Do you want to make sure the WiFi network is functioning correctly?

Always being doing that as well. Did I mention that OpenWRT works better?

> You you [sic] want to write down list of keywords for ad campaigns?

I wrote a script for that a while ago (not even for my company).

> Do you want to sit through sessions with investors who want to know everything about a product they hardly understand?

I was brought to that meetings because my boss thought they would invest because of me.

> No, you don't [!!!]

Yes, yes, and yes.

Part of the problem is they hired way too many non-programmers. Became like construction work with one guy working and 4 planning around.
throwme_123··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
Ok, it's 2/3 times cheaper but the reliability is clunky as it's hosted on a single device.

With S3 I don't really care about what happens, do a snapshot myself, spend time restoring from snapshots etc. It's there. Worth the upgrade to me.

Also, not from Europe, ping not good.

Edit: also read horror stories about Hetzner, in my former jobs had problems with OVH. No service, unreliable.

throwme_123··on LocalBitcoins will discontinue its service
Not your gun, not your bitcoin
throwme_123··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
It's mostly about costs.

I have 1 Tb of pictures.

For example DigitalOcean: 1 Tb volume storage (without the instance) is $100/mo.

S3: $13/mo (most would be infrequent access) + traffic would prob be free (100Gb/mo, I don't think I would read more than that).

I am not interested in single servers that can crash on a low-cost provider that can catch fire, get my account deleted because of a software bug, get stolen at home, etc.

throwme_123··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
Great project, congrats for building it!

> Also, there is no native support for sharding or cloud storage APIs like S3. Instead, PhotoPrism prefers a fast, local solid-state drive.

Won't use it myself though, as such solution should be centered around s3-like cloud storage with e2ee. Only the index should be in the server (and backup-ed).

throwme_123··on We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it
Clickbait article. Same was said about the Internet back then!

Also reminds of people doing symbolic AI (decision trees and stuff) that kept criticizing NNs telling they don't work, will never be able to tell why they have this output (it's even wrong), etc.

throwme_123··on Announcing Masonry 0.1, and my vision for Rust UI
Suggests two alternatives:

1. https://iced.rs (MIT)

2. https://slint-ui.com (GPL)

For slint, there is an online editor: https://slint-ui.com/releases/0.3.4/editor/?load_demo=exampl...

throwme_123··on How we could stumble into AI catastrophe
Sorry, but to me FTX just exposed the flaws of EA and I don't think they can be fixed.

Funny that the people writing about AI catastrophe are the ones who actually set blockchains a few years back!
throwme_123··on HelloSilicon – An introduction to assembly on Apple Silicon Macs
> nobody else would be allowed according to Hector Martin

I'm not sure of the meaning here. Is it:

a. ISA extensions can't be called by any program not written by Apple? (including Asahi)

b. Nobody else but Apple has the right to have these ISA extensions, but when in Silicon, programmers can use them?

throwme_123··on GIMP Turns 27
Yes.

Gimp is forever a major part of free software history and deserves total respect for that.

Everyone is free to use it today, or just get some of the better implemented alternatives... that's the beauty of open source.

throwme_123··on Lightweight Alpine VMs on macOS
Replying here also for the other comments.

Imho Mac hardware, especially with M1/M2 is the best value for money one can buy right now. Performance is outstanding, coupled with all day battery life. Build is also super premium including the keyboard now. I tried Lenovo X1, Dell XPS 13 which are supposedly the best PC laptops and found them way inferior... and more expensive!

Regarding macOS, I completely understand that some people like it, some don't. But we all want good tools on that hardware :)

throwme_123··on Lightweight Alpine VMs on macOS
Title says "on macOS".

That's the key part: Your positive experience is with PCs running linux I guess.
