throwmamatrain··on Based Cooking
Not everything is for everyone, and I feel like I have learned a lot about what HN thinks about cooking from this.

Most here seem to approach cooking as programming, maybe someone wants to make a meal compiler. I can't imagine cooking so strictly, if anything it's time away from the terminal to work with my hands and maybe create something I can enjoy or share with others. I did not expect so much rigor and seriousness! :D

I guess it's a good thing that cooking is nothing like this painful thought experiment! :D

Failure is ok.

throwmamatrain··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
As the most spoiled class of workers to ever exist, it seems strange to want to unionize. I would think it sounds like inviting the vampire in (legal, HR, etc) without board representation of workers / codetermination similar to the German system. In America's way of doing things, I'm not sure if it's good. Would not look forward to "You have appropriate amount of non-union experience but you are 10th in line so we'll be calling you in 12 months, if we do." A theoretical for tech, not so for film unions which are being excitedly pointed to as good. It can take a very long time to get work under these schemes, which seems incompatible with how tech has worked.
throwmamatrain··on Down to the Suburbs
Moving out of a city because the author wanted to save money and live with their parents is not a forced migration. The places lived still exist, and will exist long after. The mental gymnastics are stunning.

No one "strip mined" this guy into a comfy six figure job.

throwmamatrain··on Uber CEO says its service will probably shut down temporarily in California
A couple points here: Uber/Lyft are 100% better than taxi services in every way. You might get a bad driver, but I've never had a bottle of piss hit me in the feet in a ride share. Also, try not paying cash in a Philadelphia taxi. I've had a wheel fall off a cab while I was in it, zero recourse. Rear ended accident, same. Told to pound sand with the PPA. Anecdata, sure, but about ten years of it.

Taxis still exist, with no benefits, still pulling 60+ hours, as an entrenched monopoly via medallion systems. This is sort of a from of driver share cropping, and is equally if not more exploitative.

If CA wanted to regulate it, they could use the data from ride shares and create limits etc. Instead, they're going to put them to pasture.

As for them operating illegally, it is a better system and more efficient than cab services. Sharing rides alone is a multiplier for gas, and app routing is a better system that taxis refused to implement for the longest time, "getting lost" to pump up fares.

If taxis disappeared tomorrow, I would shed zero tears.

Is uber a good company? No, they are a giant capital fueled destroyer. They went toe to toe with entrenched cabs and made some changes. Maybe that's what it takes in a hypercapitalist society, I don't know.

I used cabs for a decade coming home from an interstate train commute and would never use one again. I'd rather take the bus, and in Philly that's saying something.

Hope we see more innovation in this space, if not Uber or Lyft, something.

When you have nothing, this is something. Stick to software.
throwmamatrain··on Saturn's largest moon may be the only place beyond Earth where humans could live
Very interesting take! I haven't rewatched it, and now I have a reason. I thought the ending was open ended for the reasons discussed further on. Vincent gets to the rocket which was the goal. I also wondered about the cache of materials Jerome leaves behind, was it that he thought Vincent might stay?

Defer everything until your 50s, sounds great.

You are correct in that there were no soldiers fighting from Sweden for either side, but in Sweden it is also known: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_German_troops_throu...

throwmamatrain··on Caffeine enhances activity of common antidepressants in forced swim test in mice
As for methods here's the list: https://animal.research.uiowa.edu/iacuc-guidelines-euthanasi...

In my work, our approved methods were isoflurane and decapitation. In some types of experiments CO2 will interfere with your result.

This is so wrong I don't know where to start! All of this kind of work is highly scrutinized, you can check it out by starting your own work on reading up on IACUC.

Here are the accepted methods for "dispatching the mice": https://animal.research.uiowa.edu/iacuc-guidelines-euthanasi...

You can decide whether you think this is satisfying to you, or you can consult the bioethicists that helped develop these protocols.

throwmamatrain··on Photographers, Instagrammers: Stop Being So Selfish and Disrespectful
It's obvious you've never been to a place that has a wall of tripods setup. It doesn't have to do with being stabbed by a tripod, it has to do with a human taking up way more space than they should be in a crowded area. You're free to take up as much space as you like, but if you don't like people being upset at you (rightfully so?) then don't?

Let's take your tripping argument at it's face value, does tripping + trains sound like a good idea?

The better take is, if you don't like the rules you can simply leave.
