throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
If a US made Bolt is $1, and a Chinese one is $0.50, I buy Chinese. If now the Chinese bolt is $1, I buy American. If China tries to reduce the price of their bolt to $0.40, making it $0.80 for me, I still buy American because of quality and speed and reputation and returns, and more. So China makes the Bolt $0.25, I pay $0.50, and all is back to normal.

Yes I technically paid the tariff.... Except really China lost money, the US gained money, and I paid the same because that's the price difference required for me to buy Chinese.

Will it always work out like this? Idk. But this is what they are referring to when saying the exporter will pay it in the end.

throwawaylaptop··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
I run Linux Mint Mate on a 10 year old laptop. Everything works fine, but watching YouTube makes my wireless USB dongle mouse stutter a LOT. Basically if CPU usage goes up, mouse goes to hell.

Are you telling me that for some reason it's not using any hardware acceleration available while watching YouTube? How do I fix it?

The point is, even if I was lying, it doesn't even change anything.. reality is these poor kids exist.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Once again, how hard is it to believe someone from SF has this neighbor. And why would me having this neighbor or not even matter to my point really? Why would I make this up? And EVEN IF I did, would that matter since we know there are several of these kids in most bay area towns??

And no, I didn't respond to that guy. Because you're right, I do think he's doing/did a terrible thing. So instead of harping on him for something it's too late to even change, I let it go. Just like I do/did for my neighbor. I've helped that guy with his car twice over the last two years (tire rope plug, battery, small fluid checks), and didn't mention that evil stupid shit he did/allowed his kid to do or go through.

I rather argue this shit out with people that can change, not with the few specific people so deep you'll never change their mind.

throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Oh for sure, I'm the mad Men because I think children shouldn't be given surgery and life-altering hormones based on thoughts they have as children. Your position is so terrible that there's nothing you can say that will make it ever make any kind of sense.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
I'm from the San Francisco Bay area. I really do have this neighbor. And do I have concern for them? No. I believe that child has already been harmed and is too far gone. I have concern for all the children that can be saved still, and I have concern for all the people that know doing that to children is terrible but can't understand why they're being called bigots.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Except mine makes sense and the other doesn't.

What they're doing to children is some of the worst things you could imagine doing to a child. The children don't know better, and the adults the allow it all seem to basically be borderline insane/gay themselves too.

throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
I use the insane, gross, evil thing they approve of to remind them that while they throw around the bigot word at normal people, they are the true gross evil in the world, but regardless of that, just their non approval of healthy sane normal people makes them the bigots.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Oh Jesus. Yes, every person that cares about children not getting life altering surgery is a pedofile.. makes sense. They ran out of normal obvious kids of the gender they like, and now they're worried they might accidentally fall for a freak of modern medicine. You caught me.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Only once I realized there's people hurting children that won't let you even talk about it, calling others bigots.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
I do actually know them. I'm nice as can be and help the family with their cars. But what's being done to that kid is terrible and most likely permanent. I don't think a kid is old enough to know if this stuff should be done to them.
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
Or possibly I think this is a terrible thing to do to children?
throwawaylaptop··on Digg.com is back
I actually have a neighbor who now has a trans girl at 13 years old, since about 10. I knew the child from infancy. So as conspiratorial as it could be, I am literally watching a neighbor destroy their child month by month. It's not a conspiracy.

My wording sounds way more accurate and less euphemism like than "medical transition".
throwawaylaptop··on Pixel 10 Phones
I got my entire family Pixel 4XLs when they were new. Every single one had the battery replaced once under warranty, and then they denied more batteries (it was actually the fragile connector). So I started replacing them myself. I even slightly modified the connector mount so it would stop failing. The third batteries ended up lasting years because of my modification. Finally, all 3 died around 2023 from motherboard problems apparently. Otherwise great phones. Sad that some weird hardware problems killed them all for most people.

throwawaylaptop··on 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing – MIT report
Correct, and that's more detailed than I'd even expect. I'd be satisfied with "I think it has something to do with the rule we learn in physics or chemistry about gasses warming up and cooling down when compressed and decompressed. So a gas gets squeezed, cooled down, and let out and it's even cooler then".

Sometimes I wonder how much more interesting school would be if it just explained how everything works instead of random concepts no one remembers apparently long enough to tie to objects in their life.

throwawaylaptop··on 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing – MIT report
Obviously we have infinite things to do. But we also waste a shocking about of time on random leisure and braindead nonsense. The interesting part to me is that we obviously do 'must do' and 'should do' and even 'want to do' things before we utterly waste time.

I'm just shocked that "learn how this important object in my home works" is not somewhere on either of those 3 lists.

throwawaylaptop··on 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing – MIT report
I always ponder how many people have a refrigerator in their home their entire life, and what percentage of them don't know how it works.

I've asked several gfs, and they don't have even a hint of how it works. Guy friends do a bit better but not as well as you'd think.

So yes, people live their entire lives not asking obvious questions.

Did I get downvoted because people don't believe crazy right wingers say this? Or just for giving their thoughts voice? I don't get it.
throwawaylaptop··on 'Safety Today Is a Luxury,' Giorgetto Giugiaro Says After His Crash
Idk so what. We can go from there once we at least are talking about the same thing correctly, so I tried to correct the misconception by OP.

One random idea... Instead of giving well off people $7500 to buy huge luxury electric cars that are safe, we give poor people trading in old unsafe cars (that they've owned for over 12 months) $7500 to buy a car with side airbags so they don't die as easily in accidents.

throwawaylaptop··on 'Safety Today Is a Luxury,' Giorgetto Giugiaro Says After His Crash
The point is, those features were available to people buying S classes 15 years ago. So not only were rich people safer for those 15 years, there's still a huge subset of people that even today drive old cheaper cars instead of buying the Hyundai that has it today. There's probably a 30 year safety difference between rich and poor.

throwawaylaptop··on All Souls exam questions and the limits of machine reasoning
I date a lot of public school teachers for some reason (hey, once you have a niche it's easy to relate and they like you), and I assure you you'd have a better more human conversation with an LLM than with most middle school teachers.
throwawaylaptop··on All Souls exam questions and the limits of machine reasoning
Considering a common trope is that most people are barely skilled at their main profession these days and almost clueless at everything else.. is this really that bad?

Most people need help with things that are trivial to experienced people in that field, but don't have the access or time or funds to get experts.

Most Americans can barely understand fractions and have no idea how a refrigerator works. If LLMs can help them troubleshoot their fridge and find out it's probably the circulating fan that needs help because their freezer works but not their fridge, isnt that mission accomplished, even if an HVAC tech can't use it to solve all his problems yet?

I don't have backlinks really. But I have a website for a real addresses business serving that exact service local people are searching for, and instead they get useless results before finding me on list item #42.
throwawaylaptop··on What's the strongest AI model you can train on a laptop in five minutes?
My parents bought a new laptop for their general household use and to watch YouTube via HDMI on their tv. It was so annoying and weird and not even fast, that they returned it to Costco for the $800 within 90 days.

I setup a 10 year old computer for them instead running Linux Mint Mate and it's perfect.

throwawaylaptop··on Let's get real about the one-person billion dollar company
Every company trades on the labor of someone else somewhere via expenses. It could be electricity, or cement, or LLM access, or employees.

In the end every company is a one person company, because usually on person is in charge of what the company is doing.

So I guess we're asking, will there be huge companies where money is spent on everything but other humans?

throwawaylaptop··on Let's get real about the one-person billion dollar company
That's just semantics. I worked as a car salesman, saved over $250k, and quit to become a self taught saas guy and my php jquery mess now supports me.

Did I do it alone? You'd argue that no, I had my old bosses help or something because he gave me the funds to learn and work on it?

If he got it from parents instead would that change anything? What about getting it from his own savings?
