throwawaylaptop··on New study shows plants and animals emit a visible light that expires at death
A lot of people into vegetable juicing talk about biophotons and I always figured it was a bit of quackery.

Still makes you wonder if your carrot on the counter still has any? The juicers will say that it does but if you cook the carrot it won't.

throwawaylaptop··on Want to piss off your IT department? Are the links not malicious looking enough?
No doubt I could enjoy a better life somewhere in the world. But I dont expect that country to let me move there and give me their opportunities.
throwawaylaptop··on Want to piss off your IT department? Are the links not malicious looking enough?
I am 100% opposed to immigration too.
throwawaylaptop··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Id much prefer the companies pay $150k so that it entices someone to move from Nevada to California.
throwawaylaptop··on Want to piss off your IT department? Are the links not malicious looking enough?
Yes, just what we need, retired people with a whole career of making income behind themselves taking another decent entry level job someone one just out of college can get. (No teaching credential needed for substitute teachers usually)

Every industry has its bad employers and good.

I know teachers that make $50k and no pension, with others making $93k, halfways to their pension at 35yrs old, get almost 12 weeks off total a year, and work from 8am to 3pm (1 hour lunch, 1 hour for 'prep' aka Netflix) and home by 335, and no, they basically never do any work at home. She technically has students (10 year olds she sends links to for their chrome books) about 5x53 minutes a day.

You can downvote all you want but I've seen it and confirmed it by asking why they don't double click the menu bar. They didn't know it was a thing.

I float around the VC world in SF. Several of the women that work for VCs in decent positions don't know how to maximize a window on the MacBooks.
throwawaylaptop··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
Most of it is your tax dollars. I have two friends who aren't officially with the mother of their kids in any way on paper so that they get as many benefits for single mothers as possible.
throwawaylaptop··on Over 80% of sunscreen performed below their labelled efficacy (2020)
That's already been done. Way more skin cancer now at earlier ages.
throwawaylaptop··on Over 80% of sunscreen performed below their labelled efficacy (2020)
I'm in the SF Bay Area. I spend a lot of time outside. I haven't worn sunscreen since I was a child.

40 yrs old now. Gfs and strangers comment about how good my skin is. No products ever, no sun screen is all I can say.

Obviously if you're in a cave all spring and get dropped off in Cabo in July, put on some sunscreen. But if you can get constant exposure to work your skin up to it, you really don't sunburn.

throwawaylaptop··on Tesla offers mammoth $1T pay package to Musk, sets lofty targets
If he gets that robot in every home or office... It won't be THAT hard.
throwawaylaptop··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
During COVID lockdowns I got on a plane to San Diego and bought a 2013 Volt with 100k miles for $5500. It had warranty until 2023 and 150k miles (I didn't use it though). I have spent Zero dollars on repairs and I'm up to 207k miles. Favorite car ever.
throwawaylaptop··on Age Simulation Suit
Yup, but getting people to try it involve so much effort you only really do it for people you care about. It's amazing how resistant people are to eating only meat for a month or two, but drinking alcohol is no problem. Chemical preservatives? No problem. Added sugars? No problem. Seed oils washed in solvents? No problem.
throwawaylaptop··on Age Simulation Suit
My point was that for everyone I've seen try it, meat only has been a cure-all. If that's just because it gets to stop eating all the chemical preservatives, or the adding sugars, or the seed oils, or if it's because a tomato is bad for you I don't know.. but I'm just saying that if someone has mild joint pains in day to day life, I'm basically 90% sure a meat only diet would stop them. Why that is exactly, I'm not sure. How much could they add back and still not have the joint paint... I have decent ideas about that.
throwawaylaptop··on Age Simulation Suit
I can't argue if it's 'healthy' or not, but anecdotal accounts say that going meat only cures most of these pains in about 30 days. I've tried it. 65 year old dad tried it. Coworkers and friends. It worked for everyone. No one has remained meat only, but it taught us all to watch what we eat like hawks.
throwawaylaptop··on Intermittent fasting correlated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease
The quality of studies seems so poor it almost seems like the people conducting them don't even care about their quality, but wherever gets funding and keeps the bosses happy.

Basically the car salespeople of academia.

throwawaylaptop··on Zuckerberg's AI hires disrupt Meta with Swift exits and threats to leave
Almost every company on earth has this. I worked in car sales where I was making 5x some people, working the same hours. Yet there was a superstar making 50% more than ME (so 7-8x some other salespeople) and worked less hours, AND took Sunday off.

The general manager took Saturday and Sunday off, and made 400k a year. (This was a large dealership).

The mechanics made from $40k to $120k a year.

throwawaylaptop··on Ask HN: Did modern AI's coding abilities make you lose interest in programming?
As a self taught PHP/jQuery guy with an existing saas that pays the bills, it somewhat took the motivation out of my second project.

Alone I'm just good enough to do things well enough and secure enough when I really try. It wasn't easy but I was proud I was able to do it. I was one of the few blue collar guys (although with MechE degree from Cal) that could actually make things and sell them.

Now I feel like AI vibe coding has taken all my advantage away. So really all I have is a bit of experience.

I've gone down the Sonora grade in a Silverado with 22 year old brake fluid. I wasn't towing, but it was very hot out and in general yes the brakes were hot when I checked at around 4000 feet.

I wonder if some YouTuber has done some experiment to see just how bad fluid had to get before a typical driver could notice.

throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Why would we want that? Because the food is substantially better quality and healthier.

And the time? We do this in our spare time outside of full time jobs. But you're right, it does cut into our Netflix, tv, YouTube, Facebook time.

throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Maybe not, but it's a good goal and if someone implemented a plan to make it more common I would be for it.
throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
We do make our own beef and our own corn. But beyond that, even at my house we make our own lemons (2 trees), tomatoes (60 plants), grapefruits (6 trees), and then process and freeze enough to last as long as possible. Because the stuff you can buy in stores is a fraction of the quality you get from home if you know what you're doing.

If only this specialization was focused on making good products instead of making 3% more money.

throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Why can't they? You think Chinese products are priced to perfection via competition? Or maybe their government had a hand in it, or they learned to price to what the market will pay.. I guess we'll find out... Either it'll be what makes sense to me, or what some writer told you.
throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Of course, if a poorer country is sending their money to a richer country for things they can make at home or get from somewhere else, they would be pretty dumb.
throwawaylaptop··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Or for take back some of the profits from the exporter.. China has had enough money to develope roads and buildings and companies way beyond what the US has seen in the same time frame. We don't need to allow them to make as much as they have been.

throwawaylaptop··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
Interesting theory. The wired mouse is trouble free, but I figured that's because of a better sampling rate and less overhead over all. Maybe I'll try a bluetooth mouse or some other frequency, or the laptop on fired Ethernet to see if the theory pans out.
