throwawayk7h··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
for me, I'd say: occasional cryptic error messages that prevent conversation, even using encrypted DM across multiple devices
throwawayk7h··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
No message history while not logged in.
throwawayk7h··on Finland looks to introduce Australia-style ban on social media
Why not device-side headers? Kids' devices should always include a header saying "I'm a kid, don't show me adult content.
throwawayk7h··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
I like how it adds random electrical boxes everywhere.
throwawayk7h··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
They've already invested in Matrix. Why not use that?
throwawayk7h··on Why the trans flag emoji is the 5-codepoint sequence it is
there is already a swastika unicode glyph. As for the Confederate Flag, they will probably be confused as, if added to unicode, it would likely be rendered as one of the actual confederate flag designs rather than the one which has become popular in recent decades.
throwawayk7h··on Spherical Snake
Cute but this game does not become interesting until score 50 or more.
throwawayk7h··on Swapping two blocks of memory inside a larger block, in constant memory
This should also be possible with [XOR swap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XOR_swap_algorithm), though you need to do three passes.
throwawayk7h··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Instead of ads, we could have websites mine bitcoin in javascript. I feel like this would be better for everyone, especially in a world of AI agents.
throwawayk7h··on Six-decade math puzzle solved by Korean mathematician
This is the famous sofa problem! It's hard to believe it's finally solved; I've spent many evenings staring at the wikipedia article wondering at how even what seem to be the simplest of problems defy the reach of mathematics.
throwawayk7h··on Microtonal Spiral Piano
If anyone is unclear on how to switch to microtonal mode (okay, if you're pendantic, "xenharmonic" would be the right term), use the gear at the top-right and change the Tuning system from 12-TET to something else.
throwawayk7h··on YouTube's CEO limits his kids' social media use – other tech bosses do the same
The previous CEO did the same thing.
throwawayk7h··on YouTube caught making AI-edits to videos and adding misleading AI summaries
> "Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence,” he said.

No, gen AI is a subset of machine learning.

throwawayk7h··on What's the deal with Euler's identity?
Disagree. This is not so much about epistemological correctness as it is about what's useful and convenient. math.tau is an easier and more intuitive constant to work with.
throwawayk7h··on XY Problem
Listen. If someone on stack overflow asks how to do X, do not tell them they don't want to do X unless you explain how they could do X. Maybe that poster would be better off not doing X, but someone else will come along some day who wants X for real.
throwawayk7h··on Search tool that only returns content created before ChatGPT's public release
I noticed AI-generated slop taking over google search results well before ChatGPT. So I don't agree with the premise on this site that you can be "you can be sure that it was written or produced by the human hand."
throwawayk7h··on Molly: An Improved Signal App
Does it add back the killer feature of SMS fallback?

If not, I'll stick with Matrix. It's got privacy at least as good as signal, with Discord's UX.

throwawayk7h··on Israels top military lawyer arrested after she admitted leaking video of abuse
This is the first time I've ever seen someone suggest there was truth to the blood libel. It seems pretty obviously absurd to me that there would exist a Jewish ritual requiring Christian blood. Can you provide this "irrefutable evidence," please?
throwawayk7h··on Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant – Contemporary Horror of AI (2020)
I think they meant "wouldn't have known." The ensemble cast didn't really give contemporary viewers purchase on who would ultimately be the one to survive by the end of the film. Nowadays, many viewers go into the movie already knowing that Ripley will be the one to make it through, which makes it easy to see her as "the main character."
throwawayk7h··on Google's ex-CEO Eric Schmidt shares dire warning of homicidal AI models
Well, what he's saying here is not really that credible. But if you want a saner exploration of the topic of existential risk from AI, I suggest the recent book from MIRI, "if anyone builds it, everyone dies."
throwawayk7h··on Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV?
one should use a mini pc or similar for this; raspberry pi won't handle video so well imo.
throwawayk7h··on Show HN: Lights Out: my 2D Rubik's Cube-like Game
There are two significant ways in which this differs from a Rubik's cube.

1. It's abelian. Moves can be done in any order, to the same result.

2. there's a simple algo to solve this. Working from top to bottom, left to right: click the first white cell, then click the cell below it. (Then there's a simple endgame at the end once the bottom row is reached.)

throwawayk7h··on Inkjet printer with DRM-free ink will be launched via a crowdfunding campaign
Do not make this NC licensed. I would like to be able to buy one of these.
throwawayk7h··on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version
For some unfathomable reason, they disabled local multiplayer on the steam deck version of the game. You need to supply a command-line argument to re-enable it. I honestly don't know why they did this.
throwawayk7h··on OpenAI Progress
In 2033, for its 15th birthday, as a novelty, they'll train GPT1 specially for a chat interface just to let us talk to a pretend "ChatGPT 1" which never existed in the first place.
throwawayk7h··on Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share in USA
I attach screen + keyboard to it often. It has an official dock to facilitate this. In my mind, it's a device that can function as both desktop and hand-held.
throwawayk7h··on Grok 4
I hope those are not real people.
throwawayk7h··on Grok 4
the alarming thing to me is that the prompt tweak provided should not have caused the model to start spewing pro-nazi nonsense.
throwawayk7h··on AI Angst
Perhaps we're feeling too much pressure to pick an extreme stance. Can we firmly establish a middle-ground party? I feel like a lot of people here fit into a norm of "AI is very useful, but may upend many people's lives, and not currently suitable for every task" category. (There may be variations of course depending on how worried you are about FOOM.)

We need a catchy name.

throwawayk7h··on AniSora: Open-source anime video generation model
I love Psycho-Pass, it's a classic Urobuchi. Can't find a proper review on the site though, likely since it predates the site's launch. (They're doing reviews of previous years as well, but slowly.)

Regarding the Japanese interpretation of the allegory -- I don't think it's apologist toward fascism really, because essentially every side in the conflict has fascist elements. In that sense, it's more "some situations just don't have any good solutions." But what's clear to me is that the situation itself has fascist roots. Regardless, the Polygon article in question has a much more surface-level reading -- it is clearly stating that it's antisemitic, which I simply can't see at all. Spoilers rot13: vg'f gehr gur gvgnaf ner ~wrjf, ohg guvf vtaberf gung gurl ner gur perngvbaf bs ~anmv rkcrevzragf, naq nyfb gung nyy gur cebgntbavfgf ner ~wrjf nf jryy.

I don't understand what I'm looking at with the site you linked, but I am intrigued.
