throwawaycanada··on Fridge Condenser Fans – Old and New [video]
>You’re free to buy appliances like the stuff that used to exist. They are found in the commercial realm, and you’ll still be spending about $3000 for a no-frills entry level fridge.

You can certainly pay that. And they are better than residential. But they are not like old residential.

Often these "made to fail" products actually cost more to engineer than products that last longer. It's just the company makes more money by selling you two of something than one of something.

throwawaycanada··on Being Born Rich Still Leads to Success More Than Working Hard in School (2017)
Equality of opportunity means that if a homeless person and a rich kid work exactly as hard and get the same grades on the same tests and both perform the same at work they end up in the same place. That means if they both do great they could both end up well off, and if they both decide they don't need to work and skirt their responsibilities they can both end up out of a job and not in a good place, at least until they start doing better at their jobs again.

Equality of outcome means a lazy drunk who never cracked a book would get the same as an industrious person who makes great sacrifices for their career and education.

>Severe redistribution of wealth can have second-order effects : people stop working and producing if too much of their labor is taken from them.

I guess the key is to only take from people who do absolutely nothing.

throwawaycanada··on A Walk in Hong Kong
They are surmountable if one of the cultures changes. There are cultures that think things we find deplorable are okay.
throwawaycanada··on Electric motor design claims remarkable improvements
Electric motors are already well over 90% efficient. I don't see what they could do to improve this. Maybe weight/power ratio? Even then, Tesla pretty much nailed it with his three phase "squirrel cage" motor. That's why even today that is what a Tesla car uses and it's what quadricopters use.
throwawaycanada··on Pentagon testing mass surveillance balloons across the US
Now imagine what happens when they can look at a city, or the whole country, or world, and select one individual and backtrack their entire lives. With audio, recorded from all the devices that surround us.
throwawaycanada··on Pentagon testing mass surveillance balloons across the US
This is a documentary clip from 2013 that shows what the cameras and systems in these blimps can do. Apparently the biggest breakthrough is their high bandwidth laser data communication system.

The government should not have this much information asymmetry relative to the citizenry.

If it is in the ocean that would be a disaster.
throwawaycanada··on VW’s Former CEO Charged in Germany Over Diesel Rigging
The fact we managed to invent, create, and detonate nuclear weapons without anyone finding out is why I believe secrets can be kept.
throwawaycanada··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
That is too inefficient and the problem of hydrogen embrittlement has not been solved.
throwawaycanada··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
What an unusual arrangement. Are you allowed to connect other things to that power source?
throwawaycanada··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
I don't think frequency stabilization would require that. Unless there is some complex approach I simply can't imagine.
throwawaycanada··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
They are the only ones that can know when it's best to turn it off an on.
throwawaycanada··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
I did the math on this once. For residential it is not realistic due to the amount of water you would need to store. For commercial I think you would need a small lake.
throwawaycanada··on Why Are Young People Pretending to Love Work?
Fear.
throwawaycanada··on Oslo made its city center basically car-free
You use the words "choosing to live far away" but all that generally means is they are poor. Clearly they should just buy a house and move to downtown San Fransisco like everyone who cares about the environment does.

throwawaycanada··on The secret life of teen scooter outlaws
Where I live you need a four day $650 course that you need to book months in advance to ride any scooter at all. You also need to pay for annual registration and get insurance.

A few provinces over, they are talking about asking for a bicycle license in some newspapers. It's way out of hand here.

throwawaycanada··on Delta to start scanning faces at airport check-in
>if I had a offer to move to any open seat for a $20 fee. I’d take it in heart beat.

That's free. Just move once the plane is in the air. You are free to do so on any plane I've ever been on.

throwawaycanada··on Can good teaching be taught?
I'm sure it can be taught. I'm not sure everyone can be taught it successfully, and that includes a few working teachers.
