throwaway_xx9··on Steve Miller: The Whole Music Industry Is Fuckin' Gangsters and Crooks
Actually, two of the Monkees were in bands before their "acting career" and they performed live together without assistance.

They broke up because of a no-holds barred fight with their producer/svengali, declining sales and an awful vanity film (think Spiceworld but much worse), but their albums still sold.

throwaway_xx9··on GCE down in all regions
> Do you have any examples of poor tenant isolation in AWS, GCE, or Azure?

I hate to feed a troll, but ...

Noisy neighbors are a problem all the way from sharing a server using VMS to top of rack switches.

An if you try hard enough, you can always escape your VM and "read somebody else's mail."

throwaway_xx9··on Yahoo Sale ‘Book’ Reveals Financial Meltdown and Big Bet on Mobile Voice Search
Under Marissa, engineers stopped receiving options and instead were being offered $40,000 in "stock replacement" over 4 years - worth about 3% - 5% of what a Google engineer would expect (unless they were hiring somebody away, and then they would match the previous company.)

So, cab fare for most new engineering hires.

studentrob: > Netflix was still building steam.

Netflix's stock price went down, but they already had a huge streaming business and were not distressingly low on cash.

In fact, raising prices generated record revenue.

So your comments don't make any sense to me.

However, if you had said, "Hollywood could rape Netflix any time they wanted on licensing fees," then that is actually true and the reason Netflix is a sketchy investment, and why they are creating their own content.

Southwest does have the software for assigned seating, they just don't have it enabled.
throwaway_xx9··on Alaska Airlines to Buy Virgin America for $2.6B
Anybody know if Alaska Airlines's maintenance procedures have improved over the years?

They had an ugly crash involving failure to do Mx on jack screws in the past.

For those puzzled by the dictionary quote, the OP used the work discouraged correctly, but cwyers couldn't parse the OP's comment because of the negatives.

The Silicon Valley area is surrounded by either hills or ocean, so "a little farther" is a difficult commute with varying delays of hours on a couple roads.

Nobody wants to raise a family in Oakland.

Also, my understanding is that the Central Valley is a flood plain.

throwaway_xx9··on Bay Area Home Prices by Transit Stop
The Caltrain is surprisingly expensive. It is also a long trip from SF to SJ, and has been running late for months when going Northbound.

Beware that if you buy a Clipper card, they tend to "forget" your deposit without recourse. The fine is $250 for being caught without proof of payment or jail.

Fremont is an Indian ghetto.

A lot of the non-Indian people that I have talked to mentioned a desire to move because of that, especially Chinese friends.

throwaway_xx9··on Advanced Economies Must Still Make Things
As one Chinese factory owner put it, "I can take my nickel of profit per item to the bank. You can't take your 15% ROI to the bank."
throwaway_xx9··on Slack raises $200M at $3.8B valuation for business messaging
> Has Facebook ever been hacked to this degree?

Yes, security researchers have reached FB servers in the past few months.

> Has Google ever been hacked to this degree?

Yes, by Mainland Chinese agents a few years ago.

I know of similarly large networks that are currently owned.

And almost everybody has an IPMI problem, whether they realize it or not yet.

(Silicon Valley engineer here.)

Only the little people are not allowed to lie.

throwaway_xx9··on SunEdison at risk of bankruptcy, unit says; shares plummet 60 percent
Well, I guess SunEdison couldn't get a monopoly on solar energy. Who knew?
throwaway_xx9··on Oracle seeks $9.3B for Google’s use of Java in Android
An internal Google memo was released of an engineer reviewing possibilities and ranking Java as the only viable one.
throwaway_xx9··on The Mitochondria in Startups
When investors or founders talk about "values", they don't mean the same thing that a normal human being would think.

They mean "doing what I want them to do to make more money."

Let me know if you find that definition in the dictionary.

throwaway_xx9··on A history of the Amiga, part 9: The Video Toaster
For those who think the rave comments are just fanboys talking, I was working at a government lab when the Amiga came out.

We had multi-million imaging systems built by defence contractors like Harris and MD, yet we were blown away by the Amiga. The Amiga was 1000x cheaper and 100x better.

throwaway_xx9··on In Facebook’s Hometown, the First Responders Aren’t Local
Public servants have a union to protect them.

Hold your pity until Facebook's own programmers can't afford to live in the area.

Meanwhile, Zuck buys up the surrounding houses for a "buffer zone." How tone-deaf can you get?

throwaway_xx9··on Learning from Tay’s introduction
It's a shame that what the Republicans say they stand for and what they do are polar opposites. That's why even Republicans hate the Republican party of 2016.

throwaway_xx9··on I Am Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator. AMA
JBoss, EDS and Linksys or Netgear were started by guys in serious relationships where failure meant "get a real job to keep the fiance/wife."

Elon Musk had wealth but rolled the dice while married and nearly ran out of cash funding his 3 companies.

throwaway_xx9··on Study: Immigrants Founded 51% of U.S. Billion-Dollar Startups
> Why does the U.S. need to depend on the ~80.000 odd first order immigrants per year to generate that amount of wealth.

The U.S. doesn't need them - Silicon Valley was created by Americans.

However, companies have tasted what mass immigration does to engineering salaries (stagnant since 2000) and labor mobility (almost none for H1B's) and are as addicted as heroin addicts.

throwaway_xx9··on Sources of ICQ desktop client by mail.ru
I had a meeting with the ICQ founders and senior engineers in 2000.

At the time, they were using 9 T1's, which even then seemed pretty small as far as bandwidth goes.
