throwaway91111··on Malware Encoded in DNA Can Hack Gene-Sequencing Software
While this is cool, it just seems like a clunky version of an actual virus.
throwaway91111··on Malware Encoded in DNA Can Hack Gene-Sequencing Software
I'm not sure exactly what you were expecting, but the title seems suitable to me.
throwaway91111··on Brief thoughts on the “Google memo”
Part of the problem is that even traits that are linked to better performance should not be considered qualifications.

Where are you getting that 20% from?
throwaway91111··on Benchmark Capital Sues Travis Kalanick for Fraud
Are there any similar wars between investors and majority share owners? I'm not familiar with the area.
throwaway91111··on Americans don’t need fast home Internet service, FCC suggests
Over what time frame?
throwaway91111··on Lyft’s Radical Experiment in Charging for Free Parking
No, parking is a terrible use of land and encourages bad practices like commuting in a personal vehicle using 1/5th of available seating.

If you choose to view that as a masochistic world view, that is entirely your choice. However, i would hate to live near you.

throwaway91111··on Lyft’s Radical Experiment in Charging for Free Parking
There's already too much damn parking. Stop driving to work. Live too far away? Convince your company to move to a place with sane housing costs.

Facebook has the advantage of building in the burbs where there's already a glut of parking and people expect more.

throwaway91111··on Lyft’s Radical Experiment in Charging for Free Parking
Hey stay away, better for us pedestrians.
throwaway91111··on Swift 5: start your engines
I don't think that Core Data is that bad for local storage; it's basically just an ORM.
throwaway91111··on Swift 5: start your engines
Yup, it's easiest if you understand what the solver is doing and help point it towards solutions/find them trivially.

Unfortunately, i had to write my own constraint system and practice with it a lot to use AutoLayout with high performance where i was confident i was not introducing significant re-layout performance problems.

throwaway91111··on VPN Report – Reviews of the top VPNs
Sort of; they are good at flagging VPN ips but you can always spin up your own to get around this.
throwaway91111··on How big oil will die
Hailed riding only works locally, and there's already public transit cheaper than ride hailing; if you leave your metro area at all i'd bet this assumption that ride hailing is cheaper quickly falls off.

Hell, many US cities don't even have uber yet.

throwaway91111··on Text Editor Performance Comparison (2016)
Right, i guess that was my point as well. The java factor probably doesn't play into the core speed. I would imagine the rendering is what screws the performance for the js based editors.
throwaway91111··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
I thought NBA access gave you everything BUT your local team?
throwaway91111··on Music Fandom Maps
Hmm, interesting—from my perspective, i have similarly strong intuition for love of decades, but mapped differently. For instance i know virtually nobody into 80s music, but 90s r&b and hip-hop are reliable favorites.

My point being: give me a good band, and i can list three at the same time that people don't bring up anymore because they suck. I firmly believe this is nostalgic bias at work, although i dislike taylor swift and justin beiber as much as the next person. Or likely much more. I don't believe it means anything about the decade, just what labels decided people want to hear.

Or to put it another way, my beloved music from the past wasn't even "mainstream popular" then.

throwaway91111··on Music Fandom Maps
Ehh if you look back a lot of the music from any decade is crap. It's just easier to forget.
throwaway91111··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Did that dream still involve channels? They only make sense as an economic bundle.
throwaway91111··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
I'm not even sure i could watch $50/month of streaming content. I can barely keep up with HBO and Netflix pumping out content on a weekly basis.

I could see a family buying a plethora of bundles, but I strongly suspect it will continue to be cheaper than the equivalent cable package.

I can't speak at all for sports; i imagine that alone could be hundreds a month to watch a local game.

throwaway91111··on Text Editor Performance Comparison (2016)
Well Atom, Code etc are written in javascript; i would wholly expect an editor written in java run laps around them.
throwaway91111··on Roger McNamee: I invested early in Google and Facebook and regret it
I won't address most of your comment, but if my generation's interest in video games is anything like the future, I have very little hope in our ability as humans to resist being manipulated by people with money.

It's less the homework and more your ability to interact with your neighbor without a reward.

throwaway91111··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
While the nuclear weapons are in flight, north korea could level Seoul.

Furthermore the citizens in north korea have a right to not be summarily executed because they had shitty leaders.

throwaway91111··on Roger McNamee: I invested early in Google and Facebook and regret it
Text STOP and report them if they continue.
throwaway91111··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
It will be to South Korea. Millions would die.
throwaway91111··on Eager to Burst His Own Bubble, a Techie Made Apps to Randomize His Life
This is still subject to a popularity distribution, although you may want that.
throwaway91111··on Eager to Burst His Own Bubble, a Techie Made Apps to Randomize His Life
To be fair, you can get "true randomness" with apps (spotify particularly) too; it's just something you need to proactively do.
throwaway91111··on Autism and gender imbalance in tech
I was under the impression that the primary characteristic is social; that is, you need to have some sort of difficulty in social situations to qualify at all for "autism". I would not imagine that these tests would be the line between "autistic" and "socionormal" (probably not the right term) but between "autism" and some other diagnosis.

So perhaps the problem here is either a) I'm missing something with respect to autism diagnosis or b) they shouldn't be portraying this as crucial evidence in public discourse, which is what i think you've been arguing for. Is this a good understanding?

I might add i agree; I think certain fields attractive a different way of thinking that overlaps heavily with the autistic spectrum.

throwaway91111··on Autism and gender imbalance in tech
Speculation only gets you so far.
throwaway91111··on Autism and gender imbalance in tech
Well, if there is some systemic biases preventing women from successful careers in IT/tech/whatever that's a problem—the talent supply is artificially restricted and we get inferior products because of that.

That's an open question, of course.

throwaway91111··on Autism and gender imbalance in tech
I wouldn't read too much into individual examples. However, in composite, these little tests do reveal how people think overall.
