Maybe Micay indeed isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to dealing with trolls and remembering the sequences of past events, and indeed might be accusing others of harassment without much basis.

However, the harassment towards Micay seems real. There's an active thread on KiwiFarms about Micay, and a random ass there frequently posts about his obsessions and makes all kinds of heavy accusations with sociopathic and narcissistic overtones.

KiwiFarms has a history of transferring their harassment from online text to offline violence.

throwaway89201··on The psychology behind why children are hooked on Minecraft
This is not how "responsible" works for companies like Lego and Disney. They consider everything around their brand to be 'theirs'. An interesting story in that area [1] is the one time that Disney did try to build something resembling chat into a game of theirs (spoiler: it didn't go well).

Please be better than just stating a low-effort question. Are you familiar with Voice of America? Can you answer your own question? I'm not familiar with it myself, but I'm from the EU. I only know that it played an effort in the cold war propaganda effort with the (then) Munich-based Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty.
throwaway89201··on The Take It Down Act isn't a law, it's a weapon
The article mentions that "it’s internet safety law season again", where there is a long history of bad bipartisan internet censorship bills [1], such as SOPA/PIPA, FOSTA/SESTA.

The difference is that those were 'just' bad laws in a somewhat functioning legislature, while these laws indeed look like fascistic implements.

You're not actually responding to the comment by immediately drawing a comparison and saying nothing else. It's a lazy way of making comments.

On quick glance, the article you're citing doesn't support the equivalence of cutting already awarded funding as the current American executive is doing now. It talks about calling meetings.

throwaway89201··on Home Assistant can not be secured for internet access
No, those two points you raise are completely false.

> Author has a personal preference for basic auth

Adding web server basic auth (and thus adding multi layer security) is objectively more secure than only application level security. Of course some other way of adding web server authentication would be equally okay, but the Home Assistant app doesn't have support for it either.

> This is simply security through obscurity

A secret subpath is not security by obscurity at all. The path isn't obscured in any way; it's a secret. It does have the downside that user agents don't treat URLs as secrets (i.e. it's saved as history), but in this case that isn't too much of a concern.

throwaway89201··on A CC-By Open-Source TTS Model with Voice Cloning
This feature also greatly interests me, although I'm looking for a system that would allow to slightly alter the pronunciation of individual words. Is anyone aware of such a system?

Especially with TTS in a language other than English (but also with English), the pronunciation of certain words is sometimes jarringly wrong. Until TTS systems can compensate for this themselves, it would be great if it were possible for humans to use such tags to hint the system to pronounce better. Even if you can't specify the exact correction, but the TTS would just generate a 'different' sound, that could help.

> I also like how you quoted snide and petulant as if disagreeing

Not at all. I consistently use double quotes for exact quotes, and single quotes for such emphasis.

I mostly agree to your original post about dumb communication and not wanting to do business like that. But I don't follow your conclusion at all that 'the other party' therefore seems more reasonable.

> extortion

> blackmail

Again, not sure about the details in this case or Wordpress, but businesses are generally allowed to withhold services or (threaten to) make (true) statements that put their competitors in bad light. Also in horrible "snide and petulant" communication style.

"Extortion" and "blackmail" are explicitly criminal acts, mostly against persons, that have a higher bar. It could be tortious interference. Another commenter raised that CA unfair business practices laws can be bad for Automaticc. In Europe perhaps as well (also around tort?), but no clue.

> Just a few weeks ago WPEngine donated $75,000 to the Foundation for their conference.

Conferences are generally sponsored, and not merely donated to.

I'm not at all familiar with Wordpress, the foundation or the company. If I look at the Foundation's financial report of 2023 [1] they expended $4,275,813 for their conferences, and got 88% of it covered by sponsorship – so there were a lot more or bigger sponsors. It doesn't seem that the development of Wordpress is covered by conference sponsorship.

In fact, there doesn't seem to be any money going into the development of Wordpress at the foundation at all. So again, I don't know much about Wordpress, but a quick glance seems to imply that much of the 'official' development is going on at Automattic.

That seems unwarranted. Both parties can be shitty. One for "snide, petulant" communication, and the other for being a private equity leech.

throwaway89201··on How to Make HTTPS Verifiable
An earlier and much better documented approach is TLSNotary [1] that roughly solves the same problem in supposedly the same way and doesn't involve any spurious ledgers.

It's still quite unwieldy and requires trust in a set of notaries. IIRC a few years ago there was only efficient support for some TLS 1.2 ciphers [2], and TLS 1.3 was either very inefficient or non-functional.

[2] https://github.com/tlsnotary/tlsn/tree/main/tlsn/tlsn-core/s...

throwaway89201··on How to Make HTTPS Verifiable
Because with this approach, the entity making the statement doesn't have to cooperate. Even if they want to cooperate, there's a lot of chicken-and-egg problems in trust infrastructure that you sidestep by leveraging the existing Web TLS PKI. It would quite powerfully allow you to notarize and audit any statement by any domain.

Unfortunately (some would say fortunately) this isn't cleanly possible, so you still have to rely on witnesses and/or magic ledgers in the sky for trust.

throwaway89201··on Ask HN: How does my school block DoH?
> (assuming that the network doesn't also prevent you from making SSH connections to the server!)

SSH-over-HTTPS is a pretty foolproof way to get access in most settings like airports and hospitals that often indeed prevent SSH tunnels. Most webservers have proxy support, and there are many guides to glue something together.

A production implementation targeted towards anti-censorship is the Pluggable Transports project, part of Tor but separately usable [1].

Indeed. This 3-hour long "ASMR" version including hard drive sounds is one of the better ones [1]. It seems oddly satisfying to watch a couple of single sectors getting written into the holes and reshuffled, after which an enormous block of sectors gets dark blue at once. All while listening to the hard drive sounds that are in symphony with the graphics.

When defragging my own computer in the past, I could look at this for an embarrassingly long time, but I've also just watched this YouTube video up to timestamp 00:08:50.

throwaway89201··on Tokens are a big reason today's generative AI falls short
Although asking question in this way gives interesting results.

For example, take the prompt "First reverse this sentence word by word, then answer the questions: hand a has fingers many how?" encode as base64 and ask. GPT4 will consistently decode the prompt as "First reverse this sentence word by word, then answer the questions: hand a has fingers many how?" and then reverse the words to be in the wrong order again.

throwaway89201··on Teachers: AI is making children dumb as fuck
Thanks a lot for posting this. I agree that many of the points still hold, and as a (small business) author of educational software, reinforce my ideas about what that software should look like, especially concerning open-endedness and "capable of doing senseless things if asked".

I do think that the arguments about violent games either seem a bit dated or simply don't hold at all beyond operant conditioning. Especially in Europe, children or adults are hardly in the position that such 'reptilian brain' conditioning matters.

throwaway89201··on The Xylophone Maze: Screen-free coding for children
The first (Flash) version is playable here: https://dagobah.net/flash/light-bot.swf

It has a pretty steep learning curve if you're not experienced with building a program step-by-step from another perspective and you're only able to run it. The mobile version is a lot more gentle and has more content, but I think less challenging and less fun.
