her website might spark some nostalgia feelings of the early web: https://punkjazz.org/jackie/

:) at least it makes me feel like things are not as bad.

> Not to mention that new generations have grown up with the current status-quo and seem to be happy enough with it not to search for alternatives.

Even though this is true, it is not impossible to expand their horizon. We still have not figured out the pedagogy or even andragogy of how to teach technology.

Check out my progress with my daughter(10): https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids, We are also making a card game https://punkjazz.org/programming-time/easy.html to play with her and donate to other kids interested in learning.

Spending time with pi zero and arduino and building retropie games, using links2 instead of chrome from time to time, she is making great progress. Make the lights in her room work after few claps, with arduino nano and sound sensor so her code can control the light.

And this is only with 20-30 minutes per day.

You might think that the kids are blind to what is going on, but they do see, they know something is wrong, they know they are being exploited and cheated to buy lootboxes and skins.

Remember, things are never as good or as bad as you think.

'Offline' internet can come back, we can put 32g of microsd cards in special locations so we can share content and /etc/hosts without anyone knowing, maybe go online from time to time to get the newest /etc/hosts from your friends and the new locations for microsd cards near you.

Gopher is making a comeback, and gemini is growing.

Pi zero 2W costs 10$ and with 40$ screen you can watch feynman lectures with mplayer -vo fbdev, it boots into vim for 3 seconds (init into openvt -w vim kinda thing).

Soon the-eye.eu will be back (hopefully).

The new phrack is out.

The social networks are eating themselves, same as google is eating itself, the search is garbage, the feed is even more garbage, 99% of the content is anxiety inducing miasma.

The web is eating itself, with gazillions of GPT(ish) generated articles.

Let it go, life always finds a way.

Can't we make illegal to not be able to contact human support?

It would put a hard cap on growth as well, not sure if this is horrible. maybe instead of having one giant youtube or facebook we will have thousands, maybe millions, of small ones.

Or is this just the luddite in me talking?

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
But police is total, they would love to prevent crimes before they happen if they could, and would do that at all cost. If only those pesky encryption people stop making this encryption things and we get access to all the data..we will know every crime from domestic abuse to terrorism, we would be even able to predict it, with like 97% accuracy with this 'totally not racist state of the art AI model'.

All jokes aside, of course I agree with you. Including on the police point, but things like the oxy epidemic, or the war on drugs, or the promotion of alcohol, makes me question the "protective" incentives of the state.

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
What about [end to end] encryption? By using it we are threatening the safety and health of others. (e.g. the police is slower at solving crime because they don't have access to all private information)
throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
Well if they are 30% now, they must have the 'evidence' that convinces them they are right, when they are 60% they would have even more 'evidence'. Why wouldn't they blame it on, the eastern europeans or something?
throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
Do you think the % of unvaccinated would stay the same next year? My gut feeling is that it will increase, every 6 months when the new booster is needed we will get more and more people not wanting it.

How long until the unvaccinated are more than the vaccinated? 18 months?

What happens when they are the majority and ban all vaccines?

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
Until when? when the next wave comes and the unvaccinated are 40% instead of 30%, do you think they wont start forcing the needle?

How many people would get the booster? and the next booster after that?

I think its reasonable to assume that every 6 months the unvaccinated group with grow with 5% or so, how long until they become more than the vaccinated?

What will happen when they elect the new government in 2 years

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
> I fully disagree; this matter is not a question of an opinion. There is absolutely not a single convincing reason why shots should not be mandatory.

Isn't the the reason of "someone doesn't want it" enough?

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
5 tests are 14Eur here, me and my wife test weekly, and our daughter we test every 2-3 days, so we can isolate asap, but none of my neighbours do that. And multiple times people didnt even test with symptoms.

It would cost ~50 euro per family per month, which is quite expensive, but possibly if they use some sort of model to give tests to people with higher probability of getting sick (e.g. if your child was in a school that got N positive tests recently) maybe it can be reduced to 5 euro per family per month.

Somehow I feel this is a missed opportunity to get things a bit better, I dont think people will infect other people on purpose.

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
I am double vaccinated, pro vax, would get booster if I can, but if this happens in my country I will join the riots. I dont have solution, but if people dont want to get vaccinated they shouldn't be forced, period.

I am afraid this pressure will create people that are against all vaccines, and when we get like 20% of new parents not vaccinating their new lockdown babies (which are a lot, everyone i know who can be pregnant is pregnant), the Pandora's box will open, measles and polio and shit will come crawling back.

I feel we could do more to incentivize people to be less packed, like taxing working from the office and incentivize working from home, or subsidize working longer hours in retail and gyms. And possibly we could do better with masks and more tests, e.g. send families 1 test per week so they can stop the spread quicker.

throwaway47292··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
in the netherlands they just implemented measures to shut down non essential things at 5pm.. that lead to gyms/restaurants/swimming pools PACKED with people.. half the space, twice the density. in the very same day they implemented the measures the cases stopped growing..

the fact that a scientist can recommend "lets shut down gyms at 5pm" instead of "lets make gyms 24/7" makes me distrust the whole corona committee

when i look at the lockdown+cases graph, i dont think there is any causal link between them. e.g. https://www.uni-konstanz.de/polver/zuber/covid-19-student-wi...

throwaway47292··on Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads in the 70s
Alcohol is like the oil of the giant social machine, I believe everything will crumble without it. How many of the jobs that keep the world running can be done if people don't drink to forget?

Just imagine the people that have to pee in bottles, being abused on daily basis by their boss, by their customers, and then they cant take drugs? for how long?

The facebook moderators, or the call center oberators..

As bad as it is, without some real changes, alcohol is almost mandatory.

ps: I don't drink, but most of my friends drink.

pps: what i think will sound absurd is the horrific ways of industrial animal farming.

i think the problem is that the people that will pay a cent are the people they are making 40$ per month from, and the rest of the MAUs are probably almost worthless

so if they start charging, they will only lose

throwaway47292··on Nona – A German Search Engine

Google makes like 50$ per month from you and Facebook makes 30$ per month (or something in this ballpark), things are way beyond what most people are willing to pay.

30 minutes of social media per day (tiktok, insta, snapchat), all accounts are private, and we meet once per week to look together at the feed and moderate it. (e.g. follow more things like https://www.tiktok.com/@zippycode and less things like Charlie whatever)

Unlimited whatsapp, but we still look at it from time to time to see there is no bullying going on.

Using 1.1.1.1 family (1.1.1.3) always connected so there is some basic malware/adult site filtering.

During dinner phones go in a bucket, and we avoid phones until bed time (as a family).

Between 8pm and 10pm we design and code pgzero video games or turtle graphics, or read books, or play fortnite depending on the day.

> The trouble for FB is that best developers have free choice of where they are going to work.

Thats in most companies no? The builders build from their heart. Until they get convinced to move somewhere very important as victims of their success and burnout. But you get 2-3 years of people giving their hearts out. Its what I call 'paying with love'. You know how they say 'do what you love and never work a day in your life', but what they dont say, is that you consuming that love, little by little, some day you will make a compromise, like an artist forced to paint something they dont agree with, and then again, and again.. until you start hating your brush.

> FB's model requires them to be able to hire a lot of really good developers. It may take some time, but if they have trouble hiring really good developers they will be starting to slide a slippery slope to mediocrity when they can easily be caught by competition.

I am not sure I agree with that, I dont think anybody's model requires constant input of really good developers, most things will work with ok devs, some sharded mysql, lots of ram and a bunch of materialization jobs.

throwaway47292··on Facebook employees are now more willing to leave, tech recruiters say
The bubble we (hn) live in, is turning against fb/google/evil corp for various reasons, but the truth is, like any corp they will have ups and downs, if this meta shit pays out (fortnite skins for 2 billion people is basically infinite money) they will just buy their way out. Or they will buy the devs in another way, like apple is buying them indirectly for 30% commission on their apps.

Worse case, you get survivor bias of people without moral compass, as anyone who cares leaves. Let's see how the social dilemma will play out, if the devs are actually malicious.

> Obviously, hacking into a bare shell or IDE without any outside info is not how people use computers nowadays. Furthermore, the above reads like a parent trying to recreate his own life in the life of a child. The world is different, surely.

different for sure, most people use computers as spectators, computers happen to them; of course they can enjoy it, just as you can enjoy music without making music.

But sometimes I feel musicians appreciate music in a different way, same as woodworkers appreciate a nice table in a different way.

Reminds me of 'What I can not create, I do not understand' (Feynman's last board), but not entirely in the way he meant it.

throwaway47292··on I introduced my 5-year-old and 2-year-old to startx and xmonad (2012)
I really like the command line approach to 'start a program' and 'tell the computer what to do' and sometimes i teach my daughter to 'pipe' one program's output into another's input

She knows a bit of python (here is the log https://github.com/jackdoe/programming-for-kids) and wants to talk about programming for her school report and I thought it will be great to print some small programs (is_prime or something similar) to give to the kids to type on their own, but it is practially impossible to give code to another person so they can type it, unless I make a webpage where they have to do it.

Just imagine how much is needed to setup python3 on mac or windows, go to security settings to run unsigned programs, deal with paths, or install brew or whatever, there is no chance anyone can do that unsupervised.

We are now working on making commodore like experience computer for her with pizero2 and good mechanical keyboard and 7" display, with mini linux that just inits into an editor. F2 saves the code, F3 loads from the file, F5 runs the code, it has direct access to /dev/fb0 and it just draws on the screen on top of the editor.

She enjoyed making the 6x3 font, pixel by pixel so much..

I think modern platforms take, or are on the way to take, absolutely all agency from the user. From phones to game consoles to macbooks to cars, everything is just "get this approved app from the cloud" which gets disabled if you do something wrong or you dont want to update.

throwaway47292··on Writing a Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
offtopic:

sqlite is bad example, for example features like the FTS tokenizer code (https://research.checkpoint.com/2019/select-code_execution-f...), which were probably paid by commercial requests or sponsors.

That is not to say sqlite does not have 100% coverage, it of course does, but you are building on top of infrastructure which is really really hard to be kept safe.

Rust somehow makes it harder to make certain kinds of bugs, which comes at its own cost.

PS: I don't like or dislike rust, just I have seen the sqlite example being brought a lot, and a lot of people didn't expect sqlite file to be an attack vector :) so nobody is even looking there.
