throwaway1997··on Hong Kong’s security law is going to devastate its economy
What are you even talking about. Hong Kong has one of the strongest legal systems in Asia, although it's being slowly eroded by the government. Have you even visited or do you just watch shitty Kung Fu movies and assume the whole place is Kowloon Walled City or Chungking Mansion?

Please see this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Wenliang

The world doesn't need apologists for China and its suppression and human rights abuses.

throwaway1997··on Mastodon: Add end-to-end encryption API
I was assuming it was due to the sheer volume of loli being posted on that instance. Most instances block / mute it for this reason.

Better response would have been to not cover up the existence of a Coronavirus for months.
throwaway1997··on Hong Kong security chief warns of growing terrorism backing planned security law
The thing is they can now use "it's a separatist movement" to shut anything down that's too inconvenient for them. For example, the last year of protests are being deemed "separatist" and caused by "foreign powers". Lam Cheng repeats this sentiment nearly every press conference.
throwaway1997··on Hong Kong security chief warns of growing terrorism backing planned security law
The irony being that this so-called terrorism is in reaction to clamping down of freedoms and arbitrarily adding national security laws into the Basic Law.

I want to know who falls for this nonsense.

throwaway1997··on The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic could have been prevented
An earthquake or volcanic eruption is a natural disaster - there is nothing that can be done to stop them from happening and they are largely unpredictable.

The Covid virus started naturally but that it was allowed to turn into a pandemic was caused by negligence and corruption. Those are the things that we must address. Calling it a pure act of force majeure will result in lessons not being learned and this problem happening again unnecessarily.

We, in Asia learned a lot during the SARS and many countries on this side of the world are already well on their way to eradicating the virus within our communities. Unfortunately China covered up and suppressed their knowledge of this virus which delayed other country's responses. Additionally, the WHO dragging their feet and doing engage in pointless politics, such as refusing to acknowledge Taiwan's existence, resulted in wasted knowledge.

throwaway1997··on China to ban online gaming, in-game chat with foreigners outside Great Firewall
The only person in the world who is respected by both the government of PRC and ROC (Republic of China/Taiwan) is Sun Yat Sen. He's the man who wanted to reform China and remove the corruption associated with the previous Dynasties. Each respective government interpreted this in their own way but, it has to be remembered, that Taiwan was also a dictatorship under the White Terror until just over 30 years ago.

Taiwan became a democracy because because the people of Taiwan asked for it and the regime at the time, the Kuomintang, wished to seek democratic legitimacy in response to these demands. Since then, Taiwan has grown to become one of the most socially liberal societies in Asia.

throwaway1997··on China to ban online gaming, in-game chat with foreigners outside Great Firewall
The current culture in China was created by the CCP. The culture of old China, before the cultural revolution, persists in Taiwan. Taiwan has very few of the problems that China has.
throwaway1997··on DoChat – a Dockerized WeChat PC Windows client for Linux
Yes, there are plenty of ways to communicate with younger people. But I am talking about, for instance, my grandpa. Many people in China (including my family) aren't so "cosmopolitan" and only use WeChat
throwaway1997··on DoChat – a Dockerized WeChat PC Windows client for Linux
You need to be careful with this. I used something similar to this because I don't like running WeChat on my phone and the account was almost instantly banned and I lost my only communication channel with my family in mainland.
throwaway1997··on Li Wenliang
That would maybe work if he wasn't arrested for talking about this problem in a private WeChat group. Li wasn't trying to announce it to the world at this point, he was just discussing with his peers.
throwaway1997··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
Not just that, the hospitals are completely jammed in certain areas which means if you get the illness it's often safer to just stay at home - but then it goes unreported.
throwaway1997··on Nearly a third of Indian startup founders surveyed are considering moving abroad
That may be true but Indian fintech is for domestic use and we are talking about exported services.
throwaway1997··on Nearly a third of Indian startup founders surveyed are considering moving abroad
It can be a large economy, in part because there are 1.3bn inhabitants, but my point is that people consume services provided by Indian companies largely because they are cheap.
throwaway1997··on Nearly a third of Indian startup founders surveyed are considering moving abroad
Unfortunately that's only because they are cheap
throwaway1997··on Show HN: I built a community for women entrepreneurs and makers
In HK we are somewhat well known for having a very equal society in terms of opportunities for men and women. We're also quite well known for having strong women which has been underlined by the equal participation on the frontlines of the current social movement.
throwaway1997··on Huawei’s Revenue Hits Record $122B in 2019 Despite U.S. Campaign
Regardless of your political views, Taiwan is a different China from mainland China. There are a lot of initiatives to promote a Taiwanese identity such as MIT (Made in Taiwan) and Taiwanization.

The author of the article is called Yifan Xie. I don't think it's anti-china propaganda.

That massage joint is quite popular with HK locals. We cross the border and get hotpot and cheap (legitimate) massages. I've been there for a few times. Most of the masseuses are middle aged men and women.

HK has been over-reliant on these businesses to provide employment for a long time. Most of the F&B outfits that are closing are fly by night outfits which would only work when everyone in CBD has more money than sense. It will be a good thing if this leads to us diversifying our economy a bit more.

throwaway1997··on China
Macau is all in on a single industry which works when the economy is going well, but not so well when it tanks. Furthermore, the concentration of wealth in Macau is even more skewed towards the top. The average Macanese is poorer than the average Hong Konger which is why so many now live in HK.
