throwaway150··on Show HN: I made a tool to port tweets to Bluesky mantaining their original date
This is something I don't understand either. Why is everyone so eager to move from one centralized platform to another? Sounds counterproductive to me.

Btw do you have any good suggestions for distributed platforms? Would Mastodon be considered a distributed platform?

> Going by any of the major bullet points I would say that the title is wrong, and misleading at best.

And it wouldn't be their first time.

Check https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43217357 by the same author. That post got flagged for being misleading too.

Read https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43220639 for same type of criticism.

The OP seems to be on an LLM spree. They ask LLM to produce code. The code is invariable always broken thanks to hallucinations but they go ahead and post it on HN anyway with a misleading title.

I have. It's worse no doubt. But it's not the smell of rotten eggs. My comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek to correct the mistake of saying "H2S" in the GP comment.

> If the tool doesn't work well, learn better how to best use the tool

Last night my car broke. It didn't work well. The engine wouldn't start. I learnt better how to use the broken car. It still wouldn't start. What am I doing wrong? Help? /s

I am 100% sure that the smell they add to natural gas does not smell like rotten eggs.

throwaway150··on Sunsetting Whois
I remember in the past I've managed to screw up my setup so that the name servers on WHOIS and name servers on DNS NS records mismatched. I can't remember which record won during name resolution.

I guess I still don't understand why the name servers need to be both in WHOIS records and DNS NS records. Does the name resolution use the name server data in WHOIS records in any form or manner?

throwaway150··on Launching RDAP; sunsetting WHOIS
> In practice it will round-robin

Which data though? Is it the WHOIS name server data that is used for round-robin? Or the DNS NS record data?

Do you know why the name server is present in SOA if it isn't used?

throwaway150··on Launching RDAP; sunsetting WHOIS
Thanks! Do you know why the name servers are part of the WHOIS data?

Same question for SOA record. If the NS entries are used in a round-robin fashion, why is the name server present in SOA record too?

throwaway150··on Launching RDAP; sunsetting WHOIS
Wow! These policies are like 30 years behind. Exposing your phone number and address on WHOIS makes absolutely no sense in this day and age!
throwaway150··on Launching RDAP; sunsetting WHOIS
There's something about WHOIS I've never understood. If you run `whois ycombinator.com` you'll see name servers in the output.

  Name Server: NS-1411.AWSDNS-48.ORG
  Name Server: NS-1914.AWSDNS-47.CO.UK
  Name Server: NS-225.AWSDNS-28.COM
  Name Server: NS-556.AWSDNS-05.NET
But if you run `dig ycombinator.com ANY +noall +answer` you'll see name servers here too.

  ycombinator.com. 21600 IN NS ns-556.awsdns-05.net.
  ycombinator.com. 21600 IN NS ns-1914.awsdns-47.co.uk.
  ycombinator.com. 21600 IN NS ns-225.awsdns-28.com.
  ycombinator.com. 21600 IN NS ns-1411.awsdns-48.org.
  ycombinator.com. 900 IN SOA ns-225.awsdns-28.com. awsdns-hostmaster.amazon.com. 1 7200 900 1209600 86400
If you see all the output together, you'll find the same name servers are present in WHOIS output and the DNS NS records. But wait, there's more.

The name server `ns-225.awsdns-28.com` is present three times- in WHOIS, in DNS NS records, in DNS SOA record.

Which of these name servers get used to resolve `ycombinator.com` to its IP address like when I do `ping ycombinator.com`?

What if the information between the WHOIS and DNS NS records and the DNS SOA records are inconsistent? Which record wins?

A word of caution if you're sensitive to sudden changes in light and sound. The brief white flash and the sound that plays when the game ends can be startling to some. I was definitely startled by it. Decrease your display brightness and turn off your sound if you want to be careful.

It might just be me but I find the thesis of the article to be very confusing.

> but we should have made typing feel like painting.

Maybe painting should should feel like painting and typing should feel like typing? I don't know about others but when I type, I just want to type, as efficiently and quickly as possible. I definitely don't want typing to feel like painting.

By the way, loading 92 MB of images to make me read 6 KB of text is brutal!

throwaway150··on Bio Cringe – The Obnoxious Social Media Bio Generator
I don't see why this would be considered cringe. The author created a fun project, shared it with us as open-source and is simply asking for voluntary donations, only if you're willing to contribute. No one is forcing you to donate.

If an aspiring developer cannot create fun projects and look for some support within the hacker community, what are we all even doing here?

throwaway150··on Building websites with lots of little HTML pages
> Bundled in single js, html and and js file. But we also have an ssr app runner ...

This is exactly the kind of complexity and bloat the GP wishes we can get rid of so that we can return to simpler web applications with forms that do a simple POST and get the updated web page in response.

throwaway150··on Mozilla site down due to "overdue hosting payments"
The title should be:

"Mozilla's Discourse forum is in read-only mode due to overdue hosting payments"

The current title gives the false impression that mozilla.org is down.
