throw7··on SMS 2FA is not just insecure, it's also hostile to mountain people
Are you able to use rcs and "messages for web"?

The last time I checked if you wanted "cellphone is off" texting/voice (basically the old hangouts), you had to enable "fi syncing" which disabled rcs features. Is that still true? What url do you goto to do texts/voice? (i see hangouts.google.com redirects to google chat).

throw7··on The recently lost file upload feature in the Nextcloud app for Android
This sounds exactly what anti-trust laws are for.
throw7··on Mark Zuckerberg announces mind-control
Has the Zuck been talking with Scott Adams?
throw7··on Sneakers (1992) – 4K makeover sourced from the original camera negative
Do you love the movie Hackers? I submit there are two camps of moviegoing nerds: those who love Sneakers and those who love Hackers. I will admit though, many many years later I softened to the sheer goofness of Hackers (which offput me much initially).
throw7··on Technical analysis of the Signal clone used by Trump officials
I thought the only client allowed on Signal was the official build provided by Signal itself? Does this mean Signal does officially allow another build (Telemark's TM SGNL) access to the Signal network?
throw7··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
I'm fine with U.S. pulling back funding for CFPB. I always found it ironic that corporate supported CSPAN has done a great job of informative programming while CFPB/NPR is barely listenable/watchable.

IMO, it really goes to show, it's not necessarily funding sources, but a matter of leadership/authority. The captain steers the boat so to speak. I've always been impressed with Brian Lamb.

throw7··on Arizona laptop farmer pleads guilty for funneling $17M to Kim Jong Un
What is "The Norks"? (apparently it can mean "tits", but I'm pretty sure that's not what it means here)
throw7··on Finland Bans Smartphones in Schools
NY just banned cellphones in schools. I don't know the exact details but its being called "bell to bell" presumably the whole day.
throw7··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
I want this with an ice engine.
throw7··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
AGI is here today... go have a kid.
throw7··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Lot of bluster from Harvard. Harvard is free to not do what the gov't is requesting, they just don't get the fed money.
throw7··on Basic Income Pilot Project: Study results
I don't think UBI will work. Once it's universal, it will be soaked up somewhere in the economy. I would bet on land/real estate.
throw7··on When the physicists need burner phones, that's when you know America's changed
"elite institutions devoted to freedom of inquiry and the telling of uncomfortable truths"

That's rich. That hasn't been true for our "elite institutions" for some time now, although I do remember some notable exceptions... University of Chicago comes to mind.

throw7··on Airline demand between Canada and United States collapses, down 70%+
Look up Jasmine Mooney. If you do not have a pristine visa and completely clean record I wouldn't travel into the U.S. It makes no sense to take unnecessary risks for a holiday vacation.
throw7··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
This is normal immigration. People caught in these "constitution free"/immigration zones need to be processed a lot faster.

It's a safe bet this girl got out "fast" because of the outside pressure. We need to be hiring a lot more immigration judges/personnel that adjudicate and process these people out of the public/private prison complex.

throw7··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
I'm fine with people here who think it's totally fine to set fire to tesla vehicles AS LONG AS they are also fine with Jan 6th.
throw7··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
The only chrome browser I'm using is on a cheap chromebook I bought.

It looks like I could turn on the linux vm and run firefox, but it "only" has a 16GB ssd of which like 12GB is "system space" (ridiculous) and I only have 1GB left which isn't enough to enable the linux dev environment.

I could look into seeing if I can get native linux on the hardware, but it's probably not worth the time and trouble for it.

throw7··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
I also don't want huge monitors. Hopefully the return of buttons and dials reduces those console monstrosities.
throw7··on Marek has graciously offered to maintain the dma-mapping tree
The only person to get to have it both ways it seems is Linus. In the past he's railed against c++ and it would be cold day in hell to see c++ code in linux.

To be fair, it's his tree. On the other hand, I am a little worried that Linus has been hypocritical in the past few years, but most of us get soft as we age I guess.

throw7··on Larry Ellison's half-billion-dollar quest to change farming
I just find it funny how tech executives couldn't even make and run a stable wifi network.
throw7··on The Death of the Web (2024)
For me the start of the decline is when Netscape went under. Billy @ Microsoft threw his weight around and IE dominated (sigh). The final nail in the coffin is when mozilla suite was torn apart and the browser was renamed Seamonkey. No really. "Seamonkey" is what was decided.

I do look back at the early 90's with nostalgia. Too bad you can never go back.

throw7··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
"Big fail on my part, obviously.”

Hello? Whether it's Full Self-Driving or not, it's always your fault.

throw7··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
Exactly what do the liberals (the author) want to happen? He seems to still believe that "lowering the bar" is the right and good thing to do moving forward?
throw7··on Avoiding outrage fatigue while staying informed
While limiting your exposure to "outrage" isn't bad advice, it's just more of the ignoring of the issues that she herself calls out in the beginning of the article.

She mentions that people are using "outrage" issues (abortion, gay rights, critical race theory) "as kind of wedge issues to convince people to vote in ways that might be against their own self-interest"...

GREAT! We need more tips on how to train yourself to recognize when that's happening and not get outraged. It boils down to emotional control. If politicians can't use outrage as a tool of control then they'll have to move on (to something better hopefully, but probably not ;).

Here's one tip. If Trump enrages you every time you see him, watch him in a way that allows you to appreciate something about him! He is a cool cucumber. He sheds attacks like water off an umbrella. (whatever, you come up something)... Remember, the goal here is to not let him control your emotions. This isn't about the facts or morality or how he "lies".

throw7··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
Choice of distro is highly tied to package management. If I was an Ubuntu user, I would have jumped ship the day snaps were required. I use fedora and if they required flatpaks I'd be looking for a new rpm based distro tomorrow.
throw7··on Sixos: A nix OS without systemd [video]
Subversion is key. Remember when "performance" was the key reason for moving to systemd (scripts are sooo slow). To subvert, you need some lever and the chink in the armor to break in.
throw7··on Review: Superbloom: How Technologies of Connection Tear Us Apart
Kind of surprised McLuhan (medium is the message) wasn't referenced in the story. It's helpful to think of these technological innovations as being the message and what that means when you interact with them.

The piece says Carr believes reality can’t compete with "the internet’s steady diet of novelty and shallow, ephemeral rewards".

I disagree. I do think one remedy is reality. I remember turning the corner into St Peter's Basilica and facing the Pietà. Now, I'm not one for being moved by statues, but tears immediately started streaming down my face. I'll never forget this moment. It's seared into my brain.

I'm not saying you have to go to Rome. I'm not saying go travel the world. I'm saying it might be as simple as not pulling out your cell phone (i.e. "the medium") during the concert you're going to tonight.

throw7··on IOC long shot Watanabe hopes 'crazy' Olympic idea sparks debate
The problem is the coverage. I stopped watching a long time ago. The hosts are terrible. The social backstories are insufferable. It's impossible to watch your favorite <insert sport>... I'd tune in to a live streamed event, but I'm sure they'd screw it up somehow.
throw7··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
The law can't save us.
throw7··on Nobody cares
Yes. Give people the ownership of their job. Kaizen comes to mind.

What we have today are MBA's that tweak spreadsheets and see employees as replaceable cogs in a machine. No one cares in that environment.
