throw7··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
"Furthermore, any new document will be named with the date instead of a traditional name by default."

I can't parse this? They're going to append the date to the filename you give? Is it updated in real time as you edit the document? Or you get multiple files with multiple dates?

throw7··on Windows 7 x64 Extended Support Page
The site disables the scrollbar. I have both "Always show scrollbar" enabled and widget.gtk.overlay-scrollbars.enabled set to false... disappointing that firefox has poor controls for the user.
throw7··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
The Brits can go bugger off and build their own China Firewall™.
throw7··on Google did not unilaterally decide to kill XSLT
My jotted down notes:

1. all major vendors (google, mozilla, webkit) want to remove xslt

2. chrome does not have resources to support xslt

3. removing/disabling xslt will be a slow methodical process. don't panic.

4. when opening a proposal change, a pull request of code changes is mandatory to show exact changes; it is not a "countdown to merge"(sic)

5. info that leaks to the public should include context or links to full context

6. removing xslt support in browsers is not good or bad, but "it depends"

throw7··on The contrarian physics podcast subculture
"GU continues to be entertained by Hossenfelder". Last I knew she had a video critical of GU and Weinstein.
throw7··on Mirror Ball Emoji Proposal (2018) [pdf]
unicode did not magically get rid of proprietary implementations... e.g. apple's "pistol".
throw7··on Steam can't escape the fallout from its censorship controversy
"payment processors insist that if the product is legal, they do not tell vendors what they can or cannot sell"

Absolute lies. They require that transactions that may damage the goodwill of the Corporation or reflect negatively on the Marks are not to be submitted to the Interchange System. It is also their own sole discretion what does or doesn't hurt their Brand.

throw7··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
If UK really believes in their ideology then they just need to copy China and implement the China Firewall™ for the UK.

FYI, Wikimedia Foundation just wants a carve out/exception to be able to opt out of category 1 duties.

throw7··on Why leather is best motorcycle protection [video]
Is there a difference between leather performance? Like genuine vs top grain vs full grain? Would a very thin genuine leather still perform better than synthetics?

I am not familiar with textiles in this area, but they don't make bullet proof vests out of leather last I checked... I presume there are good synthetics (better than leather?) out there?

throw7··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
Nowadays they say, "Reality is a social construct."
throw7··on IRS head says free Direct File tax service is 'gone'
The way taxes work in the U.S. is bass ackwards. They have all the info. I should be the I.R.S. where they submit a completed form to me for me to audit. I decide to sign it or not and go on with my life for another year. The state taxes are even worse (albeit, that may just be ny's problem).
throw7··on Futurehome smart hub owners must pay new $117 subscription or lose access
The article says "purchased from the bankruptcy estate—50 percent by former Futurehome owners..." So that sounds like the same people/company no?
throw7··on Against the censorship of adult content by payment processors
That's not usually the problem (it can be for some). It's really when your art/"identity" is being used to promote something you don't believe in. That happens across the whole religious and political spectrum... e.g. musicians that don't want their art used in certain contexts.

About the OP, government is the right place where we "fight it out" and try to sloppily design a system to move forward as one; these seemingly activist campaigns to "jawbone" private companies is absolutely a sign that something needs to be done at the government side. However, there are very entitled, rich interests behind the banking system, so yeah, there isn't one easy solution i think.

throw7··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
I'm sorry, but if a car I ordered took over a year to be delivered and they couldn't even get the configuration correct I'd just say no.
throw7··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
This seems to be a political back and forth (beginning with the admittance of palestine in the past)... (from wikipedia) U.S. (and Israel) left UNESCO in 2018, but the United States rejoined in 2023. I presume U.S. has left again now in 2025.

[edit: kind of surprised this hasn't been flagged, but sadly indicative of HN's bias.]

throw7··on How to Firefox
The issue with firefox is sites don't develop or test on firefox and will outright just say use chrome/edge. e.g. on air india can't buy tickets (must use chrome, actually a _lot_ of india sites require chrome to just work), one of my work's agency website literal says on login to use chrome or edge.

I mostly blame mozilla "leadership" for going off on ridiculous directions and identity politics. They've reaped what they've sown. It's only because of short term corporate profits that chrome now has to claw back some ad revenue and by blocking ublock, now firefox gets some users back. The problem is that it's not new users.

throw7··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
If I'm going to be gracious to payment processors, what they need to do is lobby congress for a "DMCA-like safe harbor" for themselves.
throw7··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
Point 9 is funny (although not funny in reality)... Americans have NIH syndrome basically.

I suppose only once the boomers die out will we have a chance of course correcting incuriosity. I actually remember many years ago some of the justices at the supreme court got real uppity when examples were brought up from other countries (forgive me i forget the case name).

throw7··on Why are there no good dinosaur films?
"It's a Unix system. I know this." They don't make lines like this today I tell ya.
throw7··on Why English doesn't use accents
cue GIF pronunciation war.
throw7··on Show HN: Sink – Sync any directory with any device on your local network
Syncthing is software where i think reading the manual is recommended. it is a fine manual and clears up a lot of the confusion. There's a lot of complexity "under the hood" and trying to just intuit it from the settings is... as you know... confusing.
throw7··on Congestion pricing in Manhattan is a predictable success
"Only after Donald Trump won re-election did it start."

That makes it seem like Trump was pro-congestion pricing... he was not. I remember reading there was a threat and attempt by him to reverse it. Lest it seem like I am a Trump hater, I am very much not impressed by Hochul's delaying which was certainly because of her special interests.

throw7··on Guess I'm a Rationalist Now
I used to snicker at these guys, but I realized I'm not being humble or to be more theologically minded: gracious.

Recognizing we all take a step of faith to move outside of solipsism into a relationship with others should humble us.

throw7··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
I refuse to be in servility to an app and don't use whatsapp. Facebook uses you. Let others, your friends, and family know the facts.

In the case of "business requirements", push back on businesses. You are actually the customer.

I get it though. The best might be a compromise where you try to limit the contacts on whatsapp to only those you have no choice.

throw7··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
I'm just waiting for the day Youtube permanently blocks me from using an adblocker.

It's so kind of them to at least make me wait for 5 seconds to acknowledge that using an adblocker is illegal.

throw7··on The Polymarket users betting on when Jesus will return
The way they will arrive at the answer is very vague... "The resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible sources."

I'd like to know the list of said sources and what consensus means (51%?). Presumably, this question can be asked and answered every minute? hour? so we could have up to the minute coverage of the second coming.

throw7··on Why old games never die, but new ones do
I don't disagree per se with any of the OP's points, but back in the day I know why I started to dislike newer ones... the console era became "tier 1" and PC became "tier 2".

Something as simple as the ux being designed for gamepads made for a second tier gameplay experience on pc. You see this even to this day where bungie's marathon has auto-aim assist for a supposed "boomer shooter".

Also, and maybe more importantly, the dev shops then were smaller and were more self-critical about what is actually a good game? It was the early days of the video game industry exploring the medium before the ridiculously bloated budgets of today's AAAA? studios.

Lastly, I am very critical of today's world-building in games. We don't have storytellers any more, but something called "narrative designers". Those empty heads are hired to tell me what to think. It's absolutely soul crushing.

That said, there are still gems out there. I hesitate to mention them because ultimately art is subjective; but one that gave me an ice pick to the head (in a good way) is Death Stranding.

throw7··on DDoSecrets publishes 410 GB of heap dumps, hacked from TeleMessage
Does TM's SGNL still work on Signal's servers? Has Signal said that they do allow Telemessage's custom signal client use on their servers?

throw7··on The cryptography behind passkeys
Is there a "platform authenticator" that allows import/export of the actual origin site, keypair, and credential id in plaintext? The next would be a variety of platform authenticators able to import and use those?

I don't want vendor lockin and I don't want proprietary third party cloud based backup/recovery.

Today with totp, I store the plaintext otpauth url and I can use oathtool to spit out codes when needed on my desktop. My phone has aegis, but I don't use any cloud based backup/recovery. I switched from Google Authenticator after they implemented their cloud based syncing to google.
