throw7··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
Stop making your kids my fucking problem/annoyance.

Some company or, hell, the gov't setup a proxy service that whitelists the internet and have your kid use that. Do your fucking job.

throw7··on Bus stop balancing is fast, cheap, and effective
Where I'm at, busy corridors have a bus that has fewer stops (https://www.cdta.org/brt).
throw7··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
"I caved to the blue bubble pressure"

The fact that this is a real thing is ridiculous. Say no and move on with life. This is the type of freedom that is actually freeing.

throw7··on Major European payment processor can't send email to Google Workspace users
Not a specification but "Be liberal in what you accept?" comes to mind. (which I always personally hated but i'm just one shoveler).
throw7··on Culture Is the Mass-Synchronization of Framings
Queueing culture is hilarious. Indians > Italians (ok, Italians are probably more entertaining), brits (I imagined them trying to bring queueing to indians and gave up... although india does have a semi-line culture in limited ways nowadays). As an american, grocery checkout queueing always angered me.
throw7··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
I switched my parents to linux during the gnome 2 days and have given them a consistent environment ever since (kept them on mate).

It is true, they could not do this themselves and sometimes my mom can test my patience, but this is the way if you can do it. (Hint: get a remote desktop with shared view working first :).

Really, the stronghold for windows is their office suite (other family require Word/Excel for work), enterprise domain integration (work to home pc familiarity), and, to a weaker extent, gaming. Gaming is why I still keep an install of windows on my pc.

throw7··on Bye Bye Gmail
"My email is now being hosted by Microsoft..."

Out of the pan, into the fire.

my recommendation: i've been happily using fastmail for years.

throw7··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
And in U.S., Trump stopped the coastal wind farms here in the east... for "national security" reasons.
throw7··on Reticulum, a secure and anonymous mesh networking stack
Doesn't look like a free software license. No purposeful harm to humans and no AI usage direct or indirect.
throw7··on ChatGPT wrote "Goodnight Moon" suicide lullaby for man who later killed himself
openai will settle out of court and family will get some amount of money. next.
throw7··on Eat Real Food
This is a good reset. I just imagine if this was put out by a Democrat white house, the republicans would be blowing a gasket.
throw7··on The suck is why we're here
"...reading actual books in full might now be more valuable than it ever has been..."

Call me old fashioned, but when has this been ever not true? Like yeah, does someone read cliffs notes and go, "that was really edifying and I gleaned incredible insights into myself and the world!!!".

throw7··on Disney Imagineering Debuts Next-Generation Robotic Character, Olaf
Universal Studios baby dragons did it better.
throw7··on Waymo halts service during S.F. blackout after causing traffic jams
This is how "science" works in the postmodern world. It's not about predicting, it's about implement, problem, solve.
throw7··on Independent review of UK national security law warns of overreach
The encryption debate is the same as the gun debate. The tools are politicized because it's the easy thing for lawmakers to make it look like they're taking action. As the report warns, the deployed laws have negative consequences.

Outlaw all guns and make end-to-end encryption illegal doesn't stop GRU dropping novichok perfume bottles around england.

throw7··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
"Trust" and "AI" are mutually exclusive. Not really impressed with this guy. My guess is the board vetted this guy to be more politically correct than anything else.
throw7··on Problems with D-Bus on the Linux desktop
I never took d-bus seriously because they said that when dbus was updated you could not just restart the dbus daemon, you were required to hard reboot.
throw7··on Interview with Kent Overstreet (Bcachefs) [audio]
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any questions and answers about why bcachefs isn't in the kernel? It was but now it isn't. There was some hemming and hawwing about "testing"?
throw7··on French supermarket's Christmas advert is worldwide hit (without AI) [video]
Ah yes. The christmas ad that has nothing to do with christmas. There's also a fish dish the wolf makes... great attention to detail there.
throw7··on Kroger acknowledges that its bet on robotics went too far
Around me, the online grocery shopping and pickup is still pretty popular post-covid. There's always a worker or two going around the store picking up for the online orders, so there's room here for some type of site-local automation (not remote robotic fulfillment centers, i could of told you that would be way too costly comparatively).

However, robotics that can navigate an existing retail grocery store is not here. yet.

throw7··on Sam Altman’s DRAM Deal
"...their deals are unprecedentedly only for raw wafers — uncut, unfinished, and not even allocated to a specific DRAM standard..."

wtf. life sucks.

throw7··on Show HN: MTXT – Music Text Format
It makes no sense to design for llm's. Do what makes sense for the reader and forget that llm's exist at all.
throw7··on Zig quits GitHub, says Microsoft's AI obsession has ruined the service
"Either you have to embrace the AI, or you get out of your career," Dohmke. Dohmke left CEO position of GitHub in November.
throw7··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Had to look it up (the texas comment is just a jab at texas being an amenable place to file IP infringement cases which is something i remember back then reading):

https://www.reuters.com/legal/google-owes-3387-mln-chromecas...

throw7··on Google Antigravity just deleted the contents of whole drive
Remember when computers were deterministic? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
throw7··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Chromecast is a dead product. Google killed it, but I think in this case it was when they lost a patent case in good ole Texas. I have several chromecast devices and have no interest in the replacement, google tv streamer.

"... the decision was made to improve the customer experience." Of course that's a lie, but it is ironic, as the reason why chromecast was initially conceived was that TV UX is horrible.

throw7··on A Love Letter to FreeBSD
Linux is haphazard because it's really only the kernel. The analog of "FreeBSD" would be a linux distro like Redhat or Debian etc. In fact, systemd's real goal was to get rid of linux' haphazard nature... but it's ahhh really divisive as everyone knows.

I go back to early Linux' initial success because of the license. It's the first real decision you have to make once you start putting your code out there.

throw7··on Free interactive tool that shows you how PCIe lanes work on motherboards
I wish all manufacturers clearly gave info like this up front. AM4 boards would be nice.
throw7··on Cloudflare outage on November 18, 2025 post mortem
Is this true: from that core proxy diagram, I didn't realize cloudflare sees the full unencrypted packet between you and the server.

If that's true, is there a way to tell (easily) whether a site is using cloudflare or not?

throw7··on How many video games include a marriage proposal? At least one
Does Bill Gates count?
